Perfect location in front of the lake
We were seated at a very nice table with a great view over the lake
The seafood chowder and the lamb shank are really delicious !!
The restaurant manager or may be maitre D ?welcomed us nicely when we made our reservation in the afternoon and when we arrived for dinner. he help us choose the wine for our party of 5 and treated us nicely and politely.
The only problem with the service was that they didnt bring our dishes at the sane time so we had to wait approx 10 mn to start eating when everyone was served
We also had to wait for 20 mn to get our desserts but they had a large group that night which could explain the kitchen seemed overbooked
Anyways no big deal as the food and the place itself are really nice
I highly recommend this restaurant specially for a dinner at sunset

Located on the front overlooking the lake, lovely and comfortable and friendly helpful service. The menu has a good selection of reasonably priced dishes and generous portions. I opted for two of the entrees which was quite sufficient. The only minor flaw was that the Caesar salad didn’t appear to have any Caesar sauce, I think the chef forgot. When mentioned they were most apologetic and it didn’t detract what was a good dinner.

We were not staying at this hotel but booked a table in their restaurant as it gave you a lovely sun setting view of Te Anau Lake.
I had booked a window table which we were shown to as we arrived.
Service, ambiance and food were all excellent.

Rating this low because of our experience relative to the Redcliff Inn which was rated identically. If you can get a reservation at Redcliff do it and well in advance—the place is small. As to the MacKinnon Room, it is fine for hotel dining and may well be a top choice for dining in Te Anau. Our meal, seafood chowder, cream of mushroom soup, Caesar salad, and lamb shank was fine, particularly the soups. The service, however, might suffer from being drawn from multiple expat cultures. We asked for a table and were told to wait in the lounge area, a mix of couches and tables near the bar. My wife was ignored for five minutes trying to ask for drinks. I went up and was immediately able to ask to two glasses of wine. After twenty or thirty minutes, during which three empty tables were seated and served drinks, my wife went up and got cocktails—the wine never came. Service improved after we sat down but never excelled. They did, possibly because they neglected to put our cocktails on the bill, not charge us for the drinks. Even after I brought it to their attention. Appreciated the small compensatory gesture.

Had New Year's Eve reservations here based on recommendations from both a travel agent and the manager of our hotel. Walked by early and poked our heads in and...yikes . it looks like the rec room at a senior center. We opted for wine and cheese on our hotel balcony instead, Take a look at the hotels own web pictures and you'll see what we mean,

Our NYE dinner was well received by guests. It is very disappointing to hear that you thought there was zero ambience as our guests felt very different.
Glad to hear you opted for wine and cheese and hope you had a good time in Fiordland

We arrived without a reservation and ended up with a lovely table overlooking the lake. The area we ate in was very small and I think we were only this lucky because Te Anau is so quiet. I would recommend booking. We had one of the nicest meals we’ve had in our five weeks in New Zealand and the staff were lovely. Unobtrusive, professional, friendly service.

On arrival we presented to the restaurant as we had a booking & the maitre de told us to go the bar. The bar had a very long queue, so I went to the front & told staff that we had been told that we would be eating in the bar.
The service issues are still clearly unresolved, we had to ask for water to drink & then again for the wait staff to take away our menus. Hubby had the chicken, which was dry & over cooked. I had the Quinoa, Avocado & Pumpkin Salad entree as a main with a side of vegetables. The steamed veggies were very nicely presented, just a little too al dente as I was unable to cut them. The pumpkin salad was very disappointing with only 3 small pieces of pumpkin in. On paying the bill I did mention the disappointing salad. The staff member offered no apology for this, with a smirked look, said she would mention it to the kitchen. A very disappointing evening. I had previously read the poor reviews on service & had hoped we could give a good review, unfortunately this could not happen.

This is a classy hotel restaurant that offers above average food and service. Despite having a hundred guest wedding function about to start we were offered a lovely table with clear views of the lake. Friendly waitress staff and great food made for a very enjoyable evening. Prices might be slightly higher but you get what you pay for.

We were at this restaurant on a tour. Our meal was a limited menu, choices were impressive. I had venison which was cooker medium rare but it was very rare, but it was tasty. I ordered a dark beer, which I was enjoying. And and after about 25 min got a light lager. Food good service was not what it should have been. The breakfast buffet was very good.

The restaurant is overlooking beautiful Lake Te Anau and offering the best cuisine and sourcing the finest ingredients. A perfect place to relax and enjoy sophisticated dinner with excellent service and a hearty breakfast. We thoroughly enjoyed chicken curry for dinner and croissants for breakfast.

The dining room is lakeside with views of the setting sun. The whole atmosphere was tranquil. The food was amazing both in taste and presentation. I had the venison which was so tender and flavoured with berries. We had the pavlova for dessert which was wonderful and then an amazing cheese tray. Service was impeccable. I can highly recommend.

We had dinner here. Many places in town were booked that night. We made a reservation 2 hours in advance. The wait staff seemed new and didn’t really know the menu but were friendly and helpful. So enjoy the adventure of not knowing what you are going to finally get. The food was served one dish at a time and a little tardy. But the quality of food and presentation were good and the wait was worth it.

My husband and I recently had dinner at the MacKinnon Room and were very impressed with the standard of food and service. We arrived a bit early and had a very pleasant drink in the bar, looking out at the beautiful view of Lake Te Anau. We were seated in a timely fashion and the wait staff were friendly and attentive. My husband had what he described as one of the best lamb dishes he had ever eaten, and my seafood chowder was tasty, chock full of seafood and very generous. We would happily dine here again.

Hidden gem in Te Anau. My partner, daughter and I had a fantastic afternoon having high tea at the restaurant. We thoroughly enjoyed everything on the menu. Few of my favourites were the native mushroom and truffle vol-Au-vent, it was so light and bursting with flavour. Smoked venison, and free range egg traditional English tea sandwiches were simply delicious. Freshly baked raisin scones was so light and yummy especially with the mixed berry jam, lemon curd and cream. We’ve had dinner at the restaurant several times and the high tea was just as good. Highly recommend this restaurant especially if you’re visiting Te Anau take the time to stop by for dinner, or high tea on Sundays throughout winter. The staff are amazing as well, very professional and attentive and you feel welcomed immediately when arriving. Triple thumbs up from me and the family. And forgot to mention the view is the best in the town.

My wife and I enjoyable a memorable meal in the Mackinnon Room. The waiter and other staff were very attentive and friendly, and the food could not be faulted. The dining room has wonderful views across to the lake which made for a lovely occasion.
