Tripadvisor’s approach to reviews
Before posting, each Tripadvisor review goes through an automated tracking system, which collects information, answering the following questions: how, what, where and when. If the system detects something that potentially contradicts our community guidelines, the review is not published.
When the system detects a problem, a review may be automatically rejected, sent to the reviewer for validation, or manually reviewed by our team of content specialists, who work 24/7 to maintain the quality of the reviews on our site.
Our team checks each review posted on the site disputed by our community as not meeting our community guidelines.

It looks good, there's always a crowd, and it delivers.
Great bao, fantastic loaded fries and some good salads too.
They even coped with a request for gluten-free by switching out the bao bun for a wrapper.
Not cheap, and if you come here hoping for a bargain you will be disappointed, but the food is great and well worth the cost.
Eating "in" is a series of outdoor tables under umbrellas, so, you may want to make this a takeaway in Winter, or on a wet day.

Loved the bao I had with pork belly. With three generous pieces of belly and delicious fillings, it was a perfect lunch for me. I care about fresh ingredients and layered flavors and this hit the spot! Given the price of eating in restaurants and cafes here in NZ, I feel this place IS a good value for their baos -$13, and a pleasant change from burgers. My husband had their beef bao and wasn’t as impressed. But did flavors were good. Fillings were very wet and made it a huge mess to eat without a knife a fork. Drinks are higher priced than they need to be. We drank our own water and were happy with that. Friendly, helpful people and will happily eat there another time or two.

This kai is a massage for your taste Buds. I got the pork belly and my partner got the tofu. She is a vegetarian and good street food can be hard to come by for her, but she said it was faultless. Anybody who can make tofu taste good is onto something. Ryan seems like a top kiwi bloke. Like a lot of hospitality businesses in a tourism town, turnover has slowed down. It’s important that other kiwi’s passing through show their support. So if you’re making a trip to Te Anau before the borders open up, leave the sandwiches at home and get yourself some bao.

Probably the most disappointing Trip Advisor's visit ever. Piece of super small bun with one stick of meat swimming in sauce for $13 is total rip-off. Can't understand those reviews

Reading all the great reviews, we stopped there for lunch and food was very underwhelming. I ordered sushi bowl with slow cooked pork belly and pork was hard as a rock - dry. My husband ordered Pho, which had very little chicken, but other than that he liked it. The Tofu chips were the best dish we ordered. It also took a very long time to get the food due to them being understaffed. Would not return back.

Ok, bit overpriced. Loaded fries with chicken $18, thin fries with tomato sauce/mayo, grated carrot & sm amt mung beans, dry bullets of chicken. Bao bun was tasty $14.50 isn't enough for lunch. Better options available in TeAnau.

The sushi bowl is full of fresh flavours and products, great to fill yourself up for a summer day. Soft drinks are from Karma cola (ie no big chain supported here).
You site outside on metal chairs and tables (may be shared if busy). Very tasty and well priced food. I went here twice in three days while visiting.
Highly recommended. Wheelchair accessible, child friendly, adult friendly.

Outstanding! Perfect flavour and texture combo - sweetness of the confit hare set off by fresh coriander, with candied peanuts and mung beans adding crunch as well as another layer of the sweet/fresh combo. Porky also an excellent option. The house made smoky bbq sauce is great, and as well as fancy sodas there are probiotic ones. Don't miss.

Unfortunately this restaurant does not allow advance bookings so you have to walk in, and if you are lucky will be placed at a table, otherwise you have to join the queue. Seating is available indoors and outdoors.
We arrived at 6.30pm and had to join the queue, probably 8-10 people ahead of us. It all seemt chaotic as the area where you queue is also a small bar area and also some people waiting for take out orders. Really felt quite jostled around and was unsure whether to wait or not. You have to choose, order and pay for your food before you try to find a table outside. Having decided to wait, we were advised of a 40 minute wait for food, which allowed time for us to enjoy a drink.
Sure enough, after 40 minutes the food arrived and was worth the wait. We ordered the Beef Bao bun and the Pork belly Sushi bowl with a side of loaded fries. All the food served was fresh and delicious. The experience taught me, patience is a virtue, sometimes things in life are worth waiting for!

There are some very mediocre or even awful places to eat in town, but the street food here is excellent, all fresh ingredients, all local sourced, and some really great ideas of combinations and ingredients.
We had a couple of meals here, and it was always excellent, and guys running it are passionate about food.
There’s seating and fun to sit with others and talk about each other’s experiences of travel, from a backpacker to large RV, we all have stories and tales to tell.
I’d recommend it to anyone.

Ditto is very casual, the sort of place you head to if you want a quick lunch or dinner, rather than somewhere to linger.
It is extremely popular so be prepared to queue for a table no matter what time you arrive. It's also closed on Wednesdays. We tried to get in a few times but were turned away as they were too busy. We eventually got a table by arriving quite early one night and asking a couple if we could share their table.
You have to order at the counter but food is delivered to your table. On a busy night (which I suspect is every night) the wait for our meals was about 25 minutes.
Food is best described as Asian fusion street food. Quite a few rice bowls and strangely enough for an Asian restaurant, loaded fries. The pork belly rice bowl was quite tasty although could have done with some more sauce, given as some of the other reviews have mentioned, the pork was a little dry.
Overall a decent experience, but definitely not outstanding. Its place as the Number 1 ranked restaurant in Te Anau is probably due to the fact that there aren't a lot of choices in town and it's one of the few places that has lighter / healthier options.

Really enjoyed this place. It is a food truck with a couple of tables under a giant umbrella. They have a great unique concept of Bao which is steamed Chinese bread, and your choice of insides. We tried the beef and pork and the Vietnam fries were the best. The guy running the truck was super chill!

Wow! Fish boa with loaded fries was excellent. Flavourful , sweet and spicy crunchy with the sprouts and peanuts from fries, delightful combination. Also fried venison bao, also really good but def fish was winner !
They open for breakfast and we simply couldn’t decide given variety on the menu, so thank you Bao team for helping us!! Keep up the amazing food.

This place has great reviews for a reason. The food is awesome! We got the porky and the feathered bao feasts which were huge, delicious and hot. The baos themselves are flavourful and the chips should also get a special mention. Will be back next time we're in town!

We got two dishes from this joint, very friendly and fairly quick. 12 momos and a bun in a cardboard box on the street for $27 was not in our opinion good value. We had to go back to the supermarket to get something else.
