Tripadvisor’s approach to reviews
Before posting, each Tripadvisor review goes through an automated tracking system, which collects information, answering the following questions: how, what, where and when. If the system detects something that potentially contradicts our community guidelines, the review is not published.
When the system detects a problem, a review may be automatically rejected, sent to the reviewer for validation, or manually reviewed by our team of content specialists, who work 24/7 to maintain the quality of the reviews on our site.
Our team checks each review posted on the site disputed by our community as not meeting our community guidelines.

Being at the start of their winter season, everything on the island was slowing down and going into winter mode. The pub is about the only dining option on the island, but thankfully it was worthwhile, and the chef does a great job with the...meals he presents. One night, we had fish and chips - a battered blue cod - which was quite good as I don't like too much battered food, so I tend to scrape most of it off, but I wanted blue cod. The chips were very good, crispy, and not salty or greasy. Coleslaw was okay. Another night I had the NZ salmon on a sort of romesco sauce and basil oil and roasted nuts served with delicious fried polenta chips - yum, the tastiest combination in a meal I've had in a long time. Served with a chagrilled bok choy. Our last night we had the ribeye roast with caramelised onion gravy. A massive portion of 3 thick slices. The gravy was nice but just a little on the sweet side for me. Thorough happy with all our meals.More

The cod was reasonable, needed more flavouring though. It is the only place where you can get a meal after 7.30pm on Stewart Is so I guess no too bad for a night out.

We ate here for breakfast and two dinners. It’s very busy in the evening so you need to book a table (booking on the morning of the day you want to eat is fine). If you miss out you can still eat in the bar...next door which was full of a combination of locals and tourists. Everyone seemed to be in good spirits and the staff were incredibly friendly and efficient. The food for breakfast and dinner was delicious and the coffee was excellent! The meals were a good size and reasonable value for money. We would definitely recommend this spot.More

Ate here twice, to be honest there is not a lot of choice, but it is a nice place. We were unable to get into the restaurant so ate in the bar, buzzing and a great atmosphere. 4 different meals, the stand out was probably...the fish chowder, but the fish and chips, steak and burger were also very good. Service was fast, which considering how busy it was was a pleasant surprise. If you are a beer drinker get a jug and save some cash.More

We ended up having four meals here given that most other places were closed. The blue cod fish and chips and fish burger were a favorite. The warm smoked salmon was just divine. I’d pass on the soft serve ice cream, but the other desserts...were lovely. The kids had a great pizza, as well as a steak. The coffee was the best we found available on the island - vastly better than the coffee shop around the corner. The staff were friendly, helpful and genuinely nice. My son was hungry one evening and we popped in for a bowl of chips. Although the kitchen had just closed, they whipped him up a batch while I enjoyed a pint. Class act!More

The South Seas Hotel is a great feed. The prices are reasonable and the food is good. The seafood chowder was excellent, and the salmon and blue cod were also very good.

We had the freshest seafood specials at this local bar. My wife had a pasta with fresh shellfish and I had a broiled fish of the day. the most fun however, was we were there for the weekly Stewart Island Trivia Night. It was huge...fun and we really enjoyed the company of people we met on a tour to Ulva Island by Ulva Tours. Fantastic food, bar service, fun times.More

We visited the pub several times over the week we spent on the island, and enjoyed a friendly welcome at every visit. The atmosphere in that is great if sometimes a little loud, but we loved it, especially when we arrived towards the end of...a pre Christmas party and were encouraged to join in. The food is good and reasonably priced, but demand is so high that if you fancy the daily specials, e.g. crayfish, you need to get in reasonably early. The baked blue cod and fried green lipped mussels are both delicious and usually available. Note too that the pub is also the only bottle shop on the island, so don’t forget to buy a bottle of the island gin as a souvenir.More

We had a blue cod and a smoked salmon, after seeing the food reviews. Food presentation is nicely done for both (refer to pics). Food itself is very nice for smoked salmon and the blue cod (fries were normal).

I came in for a quick bite to eat at lunch. Pleasant staff. Order from the menu, pay at the counter and they bring it to your table. I ordered the cod sandwich and fries. Both were average..

What can I say - one of the most beautiful fish meals I have ever eaten, and I’ve had a few in my 53 times around the sun! They were extremely busy, however the service was awesome, staff helpful and friendly, and the meal arrived...pretty damn quick. Thank you, thank you, thank you. By the way, I had the baked blue cod, bloody divine.More

We visited a number of times, a good pub with lots of different seating inside and out, and a good range of drinks. Eating can be done in the bar or booked in the restaurant (same menu), limited range but generally OK - as limit...eating options often had to wait, limits on what can be ordered etc. Overall a good country pub type establishment.More

Had dinner last night. Was shocked at the bill and on enquiry, found that one of the "specials" (advised of verbally) was 33% more expensive than the most expensive item on the printed menu. I would have expected to have been alerted to this at...the time of ordering, but wasn't.More
