Tripadvisor’s approach to reviews
Before posting, each Tripadvisor review goes through an automated tracking system, which collects information, answering the following questions: how, what, where and when. If the system detects something that potentially contradicts our community guidelines, the review is not published.
When the system detects a problem, a review may be automatically rejected, sent to the reviewer for validation, or manually reviewed by our team of content specialists, who work 24/7 to maintain the quality of the reviews on our site.
Our team checks each review posted on the site disputed by our community as not meeting our community guidelines.

Our go-to restaurant in QT. But a little off its game tonight. The new menu tries just too hard, like an over-talkative acquaintance. What tomfoolery is this, pairing pork with clams? The madness of the match is reflected by the fact the clam (singular) is...served separately. The pork itself was average, too, though the lamb was excellent. We’ll return. We always do. But without quite the anticipation of old.More

Elegant dining and quality local food. Great and friendly service. Pricy but good value for money and helpful waitstaff. Excellent wine list reasonable priced

We enjoyed the seven-course tasting menu at Ratā. The dishes were diverse, and they were uniformly delicious. Service was great too - our server explained a bit about each dish. Overall, a very enjoyable evening.

Delicious food in a nice atmosphere. We started with donuts with truffles and fish tartare, then Wagu steak, three times fried potatoes and chard onions. Very good. Good service. Would recommend this restaurant while in Queenstown.

What an outstanding restaurant. Wonderful decor, excellent service and the food…wow! Everything we ate was incredibly prepared, delicious and inventive. I only wish it was closer to where I lived as this would be my go to special night out. Fefinitthe best meal we had...in New Zealand.More

Disappointing evening at Rata - the food was overpriced and average quality. Either the food needs to improve or the prices need to go down. Wouldn’t go back. On a positive note our waiter was good and helpful.

We booked Rata well in advance of our trip to NZ as we had read some great reviews for this restaurant. We loved the interior of the restaurant, with the open modern feel and the fact that the tables were not packed together was good...to see. Service was pleasant and brisk, but allowing enough time to make selections and to look through the degustation menu or a la carte. We had the sourdough bread served with marmite butter, quite tasty, despite the fact neither of us would choose to eat Marmite neat! The pork terrine for starter was sensational, beautifully presented and the best course of the evening. Our other starter of Octopus, served in a bowl, looked lovely but unfortunately not a great deal of flavour. For mains, we both chose lamb loin, cooked perfectly, but for us, not the tastiest piece of lamb we have experienced whilst in NZ. Accompanying dishes of triple cooked potatoes were underwhelming and too salty for our liking and the leeks we found a little stringy, although we liked the texture and floor the hazelnuts that were served with them. Overall a good meal with excellent service.More

Small, expensive portions, that could be improved. I had the salmon and it was cooked to perfection, but it did not harmonier at all with the eggplant mousse. The wine list was quite extensive, but way overpriced. Still, the place was full and the clientele...quite you. I would need to see changes to return.More

Service was really good. Fit out of the restaurant is a bit underwhelming though fitting with the ‘laid back kiwi’ vibe; I liked that people weren’t very dressed up and the ambience was relaxed. Food was well-presented and tasted nice, however I wasn’t wowed by...any of the dishes we ordered - I think it’s more targeted to international tourists, you would probably be quite impressed however as New Zealanders ourselves I thought it was flavours we are very accustomed to already - potato rostis are served at just about every restaurant these days, and marmite on bread was pretty underwhelming, for example. Food quality was good but I won’t be returning.More

We had a nice meal at Rata. It is fine dining with small portions intended to eat multiple courses (snacks, starters, mains, extras, desserts). There were definitely menu items and combinations that we'd never seen before and had to ask what a couple of them...were. But of the ones we tried they were all good. My only complaints would be that they require a credit card to book a table (and bookings are mandatory) and if you cancel less than 24 hours they charge you $100 NZD per person!! Also, our waitress only offered us still or sparkling water and a bottle cost $11. I saw that other tables were getting tap water and wished we'd been offered that option. Overall, it was expensive but good and you do need to order from the different courses if you want to get enough to be full.More

We had the best dinner of our trip to New Zealand at Rātā! The food was just delicious, beautifully prepared and exquisite on the palate. It was an amazing experience for us. Rounded off a special day for us. The cocktails and wine were special...too. The front of house staff were charming, chatty but not intrusive.More

Wow! Visited Rātā last week with my dad on our last night in Queenstown and what a fantastic, memorable evening we had. Very hard to find fault in the meal, service, or ambience. We had the tasting menu which was an awesome way to try...all sorts of Rātā's fantastic flavours. From the kingfish crudo, to the marmite butter it was all absolutely delicious. Friendly, attentive but unfussy service with a lovely relaxing and welcoming atmosphere. The wine list was also fantastic, with lots of choice of some brilliant local wines. We both felt incredibly lucky to have experienced such an amazing meal here, one we won't be forgetting any time soon. Absolutely perfect!More

Rata is located in the far end (away from the lake of Queenstown. It is hidden in Te nuku on Ballarat Street. Keep an eye out for the signs and you will eventually get to the entrance. I was fortunate enough to be able to...get a counter table as I didn't have a booking. The food and drink menus are both quite interesting and have nice options. I started with the Arrowtown Settler cocktail and that was quite nice since it had a the fragrance and flavour of pandan. The food menu had a la carte or set menu options. I opted with the a la carte since I wanted to try the octopus. I also grabbed the lamb rump as a main and the ice cream sandwich for dessert. I quite liked the octopus even though it didn't look like it when it came out. The slight spiciness of the nduja was quite nice with the tender octopus. The lamb rump was cooked nicely but having a crispier skin would have made it perfect. the crumbly merguez sausage was interesting and added different flavours and textures to the dish. There was sufficient sauce in the dish that the sausage didn't feel dry. The date puree added some sweetness to it. The ice cream sandwich was interesting. The sesame crackers gave it a savoury favour, as did the miso mousse on top of the ice cream. The texture of the ice cream itself was more like a panna cotta than an ice cream. The overall flavours were interesting and nice. The food here is quite good and the flavours quite unique. The pricing is more on the expensive side though. It is a nice place to try if you are looking for something fancy but relaxed. Make sure to book though if you are wanting to try it.More
