Tripadvisor’s approach to reviews
Before posting, each Tripadvisor review goes through an automated tracking system, which collects information, answering the following questions: how, what, where and when. If the system detects something that potentially contradicts our community guidelines, the review is not published.
When the system detects a problem, a review may be automatically rejected, sent to the reviewer for validation, or manually reviewed by our team of content specialists, who work 24/7 to maintain the quality of the reviews on our site.
Our team checks each review posted on the site disputed by our community as not meeting our community guidelines.

Dinner for four on a Sunday - prix fixe tasting menu in a private room (which we had not requested). Incredibly lovely ambiance and experience. Each dish was beautifully presented and absolutely delicious. Service was crisp and efficient but not particularly attentive. One on the top 5 Japanese/Sushi meals of our lives which includes many very diverse locations. Highly recommended

Our daughter gifted us a voucher to sample Tatsumi’s degustation ‘Emperor’ menu, and we didn’t know what to expect, as Queenstown isn’t typically known for its food scene like Sydney. However, Tatsumi turned out to be a rare gem! The restaurant is cozy and stylishly decorated, with comfortable sofa-style seating. The service was quintessentially Japanese—polite, attentive, and thoughtful.
The ‘Emperor’ menu was simply outstanding. Each dish was fresh, delicious and beautifully blended traditional Japanese flavours with a modern European twist. Despite being a degustation menu with an entrée, 12 dishes, and dessert, the portion sizes were generous. The value for money was incredible, especially in a tourist destination like Queenstown.
We’re already planning to return during our short stay in Queenstown. Highly recommended for anyone seeking high-quality Japanese cuisine at reasonable prices!

I really enjoyed my recent experience at Tatsumi. The food was very fresh and full of flavour. While the menu includes all the Japanese standards such as sushi and sashimi, there are also quite a few items which are more Asian fusion such as beef takaki carpaccio with rocket and double cooked pork spare ribs.
My favourite dish of the night was a toss up between the spicy tuna and mango roll and the pork spare ribs.
The serving sizes were much larger than I expected and good value for the amount and quality of the food.
Service was great, very attentive.
Like most restaurants in Queenstown, Tatsumi can be hard to get into, so make sure to book at least a few days in advance.

My 3 friends and I experienced a fabulous dining experience tonight . We had the set menu at $85.00 per head and dined on the most fabulous selection of beautifully presented and delicious fresh Japanese food served by wonderful helpful staff .
I can highly recommend this lovely restaurant for an excellent dining experience and so well priced meal . So much food you won’t go home hungry.

Elegant Japanese restaurant with impeccable service and such lovely food. My sake was served with a great explanation and the recommended drink was a great complement to our meal. All meals were beautifully plated and super fresh ingredients. I wish I could have gone on ordering and eating it was soo pleasurable.

We went for dinner and met the owner of the restaurant. She is very gracious and told us her husband is the chef. They are from Tokyo and Hiroshima. I had an appetizer of prawns that are on a skewer with a delicious soft potato and broccoli. Each one is presented in a small glass. We had a roll with avocado and salmon. It was large and also fresh. The chicken karaage is very crispy, hot and tasty. I also had some broccoli with a miso seasoning that is delicious.
The service is personal and friendly.
We did not have any drinks but they have a saki menu and of course other drinks.
It is a small space on the second floor with windows that open to the mall/street below.

When I booked online there was only a choice of having one of the set menus! The restaurant was only a 1/3 full and once we had started our set menu I noticed that none of the other tables were doing a set menu! ordering of the regular menu. I think if you have changed the way you want your diners to eat you need to let them know as we would have much preferred to order off the menu! We were not given the choice unfortunately and our dinning experience would have been a lot more enjoyable. We also felt rushed even though twice I asked if they could slow it down.
The food was okay ……….

Nice review from trip advisor so decided to try, not too busy but need booking. Staff are nice. Got a whole room for three persons. The assorted sashimi is overpriced for the amount of fish they have, they chopped up the prawn into small 1cm pieces, the hamachi and salmon into small 2x2cm v thin pieces - which is not the conventional way of presenting sashimi in restaurants in Japan. The oyster and prawn tempuras are nice, the blue cod is the best. The chawan is average only. Wine list is extensive.
which is not conventional Japanese. Nigiri is ok but the salmon and scallop lack taste.

I really wanted to like this place but things did not start out well.
We made a reservation last week that was finally confirmed two days ago because they only confirm reservations for the prepaid pre-fixe menu. I assume this is because it is their highest margin menu option.
When we arrived at 8pm, I asked if we could sit at a different, more comfortable table but was told this was the table we were assigned and could not move. I found this odd because the restaurant had only 4 tables occupied and they closed at 9pm. Only 2 other guests arrived after us and were given very nice tables.
Next, we were not approached for close to 20 minutes for a drink order, and in the interim, the two tables that were seated after us, both ordered drinks and then dinner.
The salads, that arrived 55 minutes after we were seated, were fresh but still very average.
We ordered a whole crayfish (lobster) to be prepared sashimi style but were told later, this item was not available.
The sushi rolls were just okay. The Spider roll's softshell crabs breading was a bit gummy and the cucumbers were old.
We also ordered Salmon and Wagyu Nigiri. Both had a strong butane flavor which is an indication of poor technique coupled with a low torch. Not good!
The ironic part of the meal was the gnocchi with shrimp. It was the best item we had. Still just okay, but good in comparison. We would not have normally ordered gnocchi but it was a last minute replacement for the crayfish sashimi.
There are several other restaurants in Queenstown that are fabulous. This is just not one of them.

We were a pre-booked party of two and got seated between a wall and the front window with an unattractive view. Not all food ordered arrived. I think we were forgotten sitting tucked away and unseen. The food was fresh but average with some dishes quite greasy. Service very average. With the rating on trip advisor, we were expecting alot better.

We booked ahead based on reviews and went early, already well attended and we were well welcomed. The food was sensational and the service was very attentive, with even some tips on where to stay in Tokyo. Great experience!

We decided on the degustation menu which was I wise choice as the variety offered was excellent. We enjoyed freshly shucked oysters, seared scallops and prawns, selected sashimi, beef ribs, delicious lamb cutlets and finished with a black sesame crème brûlée. The only comment is that although delicious the food came out too quickly and didn’t really get a chance to fully savour each dish.

Service is attentive and courteous. Layout and furnishings are not fine dining but nor are the prices. The food scores 10 out of 10. It is not overly expensive by Queenstown standards and unlike Botswana Butchery we were not pressed for a tip.
Skewered prawns delicious.
Salmon sashimi melted in the mouth.
Prawn tempura - perfect,
We are going back.

While it can be a little challenging to find the restaurant, once you do you’re in for a treat. When I dined during the holiday, they were only offering a degustation menu. I combined that with the sake and wine pairing and was treated to several new dishes I had never had before. They easily accommodated my lactose intolerance and service was thoughtful and quick. If this restaurant is on your bucket list, make sure you make a reservation to be sure you can get in.
