Breakfast delight

I have celiac disease and often have a hard time eating out, especially when traveling. The Grille was a delightful surprise. I had Corn Beef Hash on potatoes with a chutney, gluten free bread and various other delicious bits and pieces. Excellent service and a very quirky ambiance makes this a must visit restaurant in Invacargill.

A top place for brunch!

The Grill is in the same building as Bill Richardson Transport Word, and it is by no means a museum cafe. The food is amazing, the choice on the menu is stunning and service is friendly, professional and pretty quick! I opted for the Shakshuka, pictured, and was blown away by the taste: Perfectly runny eggs were met with exposions of spices in an aromatic tomato sauce. The Grille is so outstanding I would eat there every day - I wish I'd discovered it sooner! It would be a top place for brunch anywhere!

How to conjugate a museum and a restaurant

The scenery use the museum aim in a very good way. They Ofer a wide range of food and drink, but not that of a fast food brand but real cooked and made food. So have a try , with a good price .

My daughter and I came for lunch at the Grille, it was not overly busy as there were plenty empty tables. We waited to be seated which took about 10 minutes to be told that the wait was because they had been dealing with someone complaining. We were finally seated to then wait another 15 minutes while waitresses and waiters cleared tables around us, after awkwardly having to stare at someone they finally came to take our order. I was disappointed in the lack of selection which in previous visits had never been the case. We ordered the fish and chips which came out in a timely matter however was disappointed that my daughters fish and chips were brought out on a plate with a paper bag as a soak for grease. My plate I paid what I thought was a lot of money for 2 rather small fillets of blue cod. This experience has left me disappointed and not likely to return anytime soon which is unfortunate as it was always a great place to come for great food and atmosphere at reasonable prices.

TOTAL DISAPPOINTMENT

I was excited to book to celebrate a special occasion but ended up just having a normal weekday lunch. Nothing special. I messaged a staff in the morning and spoke to her directly in person when we arrived at the premises about the plan for the day to bring up a cake with a birthday candle and a milkshake, to which she agreed happily. We ended the meal, nothing came out until everyone have left. It was just a lunch. Totally UNHAPPY. Messaged her and received no response at all.

Not just any cafe, this cafe is inside the world-famous-ln-NZ Bill Richadson Transport Museum and it carries the same world class attention to detail in all they do. Even though we just had a hot chocolate and a turmeric latte, we were made to feel like kings and queens.. AND the drinks were amazing too by the way :) We will definitely plan to return for lunch or dinner on our next visit to lnvercargill, thank you 😍 🙏

Very slow and average food.

Really slow service and average food. Popped in while waiting for daughter’s hockey game to start. Had 1 1/2 hrs up our sleeve. The cafe was busy but not packed. We were advised it would be 30-40 mins for food to arrive. After 45 minutes we asked how much longer, another 10 mins. Two out of 5 orders came out. The rest arrived after another 10 minutes. Daughter had the picnic plate- crackers were wet and the lolly cake. I ordered mushrooms on toast, no flavour and the bread was soggy with mushroom juice. All in all not a great experience and unlikely to return. Did not seem short staffed, maybe behind the scenes they were.

Refreshments after the Dig It experience

This cafe/restaurant is in the Bill Richardson Museum in Invercargill. It is a retro transport themed cafe. It even has a petrol pump in the men’s loo. The menu was extensive. We had giant cheese rolls and you’ve got to have these if you are in the South of the South Island. They look to serve other delicious food. Great place to visit if you are going round the museum (not to be missed) or if you have just had a go at ‘Dig it.’ Paul and Mary Reet DUNEDIN

Great food and drink, amazing cheese rolls

I often come here with friends and family and it’s consistently great. There is always a table, they open on a weekend and the food and drinks are awesome, we’ve had breakfast, morning tea and lunch here and never been disappointed by anything from the menu. Also... best cheese rolls I’ve ever had (here and Motorcycle Mecca are the same to be fair).

Had morning tea and then lunch after the Museum

Great restaurant - excellent cheese rolls and they do a fantastic seafood chowder - highly recommend the chowder (they even did one for a gluten free member of our party). Staff are great and make one feel welcome. I'd go back just for another bowl of the chowder (or two - sheer greed). Recommend

Lovely food

First stop in Invercargill was Bill Richardson Transport World and we had lunch at The Grille before we did the tour. I had salmon, which was really nice and my partner had the blue cod, which he enjoyed. We both had a glass of rose and decided that it was an excellent meal to begin our stay in Invercargill. Maybe a little on the pricey side for lunch, but worth it

Brilliant service with a smile or two.

Lovely meal and great service. Kids loved there meal especially the French toast and crispy chicken. I had the American burger which was outstanding. Kahlee at the counter was very helpful and showed awesome enthusiasm also made us feel very welcome having four kids with me. Analys was my server and she was great with awesome attitude also very welcoming 10/10 I will be back.

Brunch and the museum visit

We arrived at 11am...It was busy, we stood around looking for a place to sit. We cleaned our own table and asked the wait service for a cloth to wipe the table ourselves, after we had cleared away the dishes from the previous occupants, so we could sit down. One of the waitresses saw us do this... The staff were very pleasant, but, completely run off their feet trying to do everything from bus tables, serve and deliver food and keep a wonderful smile on their faces all of the time. We went through the awesome museum and then came back to the Grille and ordered takeaway coffee and cheese rolls, they were delivered in an appropriate time frame, with staff regularly checking and advising when we would receive our order. Dedicated bus staff may ensure a quicker and better turnaround of patrons. Maybe, someone or two had called in sick...

Underwhelming, poor service

Group of 6 for Sunday lunch, wasn't overly busy at all. First meal arrived OK, for my friend who ordered first. Then couple who were last to order food arrived, then mine. 2 others had ordered first, sat waiting for only salads from cabinet. Waited 10 minutes while others ate food. Went up to ask, still another 10 minutes. Couple had ordered coffee in mugs, were shown mugs when they ordered, coffee arrived in small cups. Told run out of mugs. Staff seemed untrained. Cabinet food underwhelming. Salad was tasteless. Glad I only had hot chips. Won't be back.

Back to the museum, not to the grille

Incredible poor attitude from waitress, told us the table was reserved and that’s fine but had no reserved sign ,went away to sort another table or at least that’s what we thought. She then began talking to another waitress who asked about another couple that had since walked in then said what about them, meaning us and replied “ I don’t know” both then walked away. That was the end of that!!!! Took our money elsewhere.
