Tripadvisor’s approach to reviews
Before posting, each Tripadvisor review goes through an automated tracking system, which collects information, answering the following questions: how, what, where and when. If the system detects something that potentially contradicts our community guidelines, the review is not published.
When the system detects a problem, a review may be automatically rejected, sent to the reviewer for validation, or manually reviewed by our team of content specialists, who work 24/7 to maintain the quality of the reviews on our site.
Our team checks each review posted on the site disputed by our community as not meeting our community guidelines.

Went to try Bonsai as a family, although this is not set up as a restaurant so we left. I went back myself for a quick lunch and the food was decent and prices not so bad. Tbh this shop looks like a storage area...with a couple of tables in it, but not a bad choice for a quick bite on the run.More

I frequently go to this little Restaurant for lunch. The food is cheap and the owner very friendly and helpful. I find the food to be of a very good quality.

The staff was not very happy when being asked if the food was spicy even though she saw us with a 4 year old. Food was not even that great! I will never set foot on this restaurant again.

More lunch bar than restaurant, this place is nevertheless a friendly place for a cheap tasty Japanese meal. The service was willing and my bento box meal was standard fare but very tasty.

Unfortunately most of what food we selected from the menu was unavailable. Not a good start. Finally we selected adamame beans as an entree and salmon as a main. The latter was served with salad and rice and miso soup. The beans were well cooked...and tasty but the actual pods varied from 1-3 beans inside so were not of top grade. The salmon turned out to be square bits about 40-50 cm each side. While overcooked by some standards they were surprisingly tasty and were enjoyed. The miso soup was just average but the rice was excellent. My partner commented that if we had been able to see the food being prepared we may not have stayed. Overall we left modestly satisfied but would probably not return.More

The best sushi in town. The bento box is always good if you are wanting a little more than just sushi. Always made fresh.

Went in for dinner at 7pm, their sign said they close at 8pm. After waiting ages to be served, we're told we couldn't have a dine-in dinner but they could do takeaways. Why bother having closing times if your going to close whenever you want.

I have been popping in for the last couple of years as a treat for my daughter who loves Japanese food. The interior really needs tidied up. Service has slipped and are now not very accommodating for slight menu alterations. Recently the rice has either...been dry or gluggy. The tempura veges were the thinnest of slices with a thick batter. The lady managing the place seems grumpy and not friendly, really letting the place down...More

My colleague and I were looking for a place to have tea and finally selected Bonsai after searching around some other possible choices of different cuisines in the area. At first I didn't recognize the place but after a while it dawned on me that...some 30 to 40 years ago when I lived in Southland the premises had been one of our favourite coffee bars for lunch when in Invercargill. Unfortunately the appearance inside now is not all that attractive. We made our choices from the menu. I selected Stewart Island Salmon Teriyaki. It came with a bowl of Miso soup and a side dish or rather gluggy rice. The salmon and salad was delicious and very tasty and went someway to make up for the negatives. I felt that if the place could be spruced up inside and made more attractive then it could have some potential to improve. At the moment it does give the impression of being fairly mediocre.More

There are certainly good and bad points about Bonsai Restaurant. We'll start off with the bad: no space to move or even sit down to eat without being bumped into, the staff look like they want to be elsewhere, and the decor is ghastly. But...the food is good and I recommend the Chicken Teriyaki Bento Box. I do find it out that sushi isn't refrigerated considering rice is a high risk food though...More

whilst John Cleese nailed Palmerston North, if you ever want to put someone off Japanese cuisine, bring them here! Misappropriate description of wines abounds too, Mount Difficulty turns out to be Roaring Meg, the screaming ho at Bardot prices!

My partner and I went for lunch recently at this restaurant in Invercargill. Started off badly with the person taking my order at the counter trying to overcharge me. Then when our lunch arrived the food was greasy and lukewarm, the rice was cold and...sticky, they forgot our Miso soup until we reminded them. Maybe it was the normal chefs day off as others seem to recommend this restaurant? Personally I wouldn't recommend this restaurant.More
