Tripadvisor’s approach to reviews
Before posting, each Tripadvisor review goes through an automated tracking system, which collects information, answering the following questions: how, what, where and when. If the system detects something that potentially contradicts our community guidelines, the review is not published.
When the system detects a problem, a review may be automatically rejected, sent to the reviewer for validation, or manually reviewed by our team of content specialists, who work 24/7 to maintain the quality of the reviews on our site.
Our team checks each review posted on the site disputed by our community as not meeting our community guidelines.

Still the best cafe in Invercargill. Great coffee and the food is of the highest quality. The staff, like all the H&J’s staff, provide the best customer service you’ll find anywhere in the world. Five Stars.

I was very disappointed with the selection on display. No hearty southland food like my favourite, cheese and pineapple toasted sandwiches. Looks just like every other cafe, not a historic southland icon. Won't be recommending.

After shopping up a storm in H and J Smith, four of us went in to the restaurant for lunch. Two ordered the hot seafood noodle dish of the day. We both found the dish to be very over salted, and inedible. After bringing this...to the attention of the waitperson , we just asked that they bring us a couple of cheese rolls instead. We were told they couldn’t do this at no charge and so the manager duly arrived. She agreed to do this. 20 minutes passed an no cheese rolls. One of the staff noticed we were still waiting and went to check. They had forgotten them, I approached the counter and asked for a refund of both original dishes as we were totally over the experience by now. I was told they couldn’t authorise the refund, and they went off to find the manager. She was not to be found, so the staff made the call to refund. Unbelievable.More

Went here for what I hoped would be a nice lunch and left utterly disappointed. There were little-to-no allergen-freindly menu options, and I had to settle for a coffee- which was mediocre at best. Didn't like that they wore ineffective plastic masks, and we could...hear the chef throwing a tantrum from our table. No wonder all the staff look depressed. Do not recommend.More

We had a great experience. The girls were very pleasant and friendly. The blue cod I had was lovely and my husband had the rib eye steak and prawns and twice cooked wedges and it was lovely too. We will definitely travel back to this...restaurant again.More

My fiancé and I went to the copper kettle for lunch on Saturday 30th October. There was a sign stating to wait to be seated. We waited for several minutes. There were at least three people behind the counter serving. There was a small group...at the cashier. Nobody acknowledged us. After waiting for several minutes we walked over to the counter. A girl behind the counter immediately instructed us like we were 2 yr olds to wait back around where the sign was. I informed her we had been waiting but nobody had come to see us. She then informed us that there could only be one group in counter area at a time. We had maintained our 2 meter distance but this didn’t seem to matter. When we were served I asked if it was possible to get one egg scrambled. I was informed that this was not possible and they could only serve what was on the board. I am currently on a special diet post surgery. The server wasn’t interested and wasn’t able to help. We weren’t seated at alI even though that’s what the sign said. No tables were marked not to sit at for social distancing. You could sit anywhere and some seats were not 2 meters from other seats at other tables. I asked for a pot of tea no milk but extra water on the side. The extra water didn’t come with the pot of tea. I couldn’t go back to the counter as others were there now being served. I had to try and flag a server down to get them to get it for me. The busboy was busy clearing tables with his mask down under his nose walking around tables and people closer than 2 meters yet we were the people that needed to be told off. Staff were unfriendly. I understand that Covid has made everyone irritated but if you have to give the same information to pass on to the public even if it’s every five minutes that’s no excuse for the attitude that went with it. We need to continue to be kind no matter how frustrating the situation is. If people such as myself keep making this mistake then clearly your system isn’t working. Need to acknowledge people waiting that they are doing the right thing and you will be with them soon. Ignoring them leads to confusion. Sign should possibly say please wait here to be served as you will be walked around the cabinet with a server.More

Definitely improved since new management, prices aren’t bad considering everything has gone up with minimum wages rising and COVID-19 outbreaks. Staff are professional and friendly, also heard there are some big changes coming soon! Child friendly, has a play area and fireplace with comfy couches!...This restaurant/cafe is more of a lunchtime option, though there will be breakfast options coming soon and a change of opening hours. Kitchen opens at 11am till 2:30pm everyday. Gluten free and vegetarian options. My favourite place to sit is at the booth seats! Really love the coffee here! Drink it everyday almost :)More

Not our first meal here - we always pop in when in town. Roast of the Day at $12 was amazing value - pork completed with crackle, veg, roasties, apple and gravy. Where else can you get a deal like that? And super friendly service...even when every seat is full! Great stop when shopping in the department store or anywhere.More
