Good food, friendly staff

Close to where I was staying so I popped in for an early dinner - Had the lamb entree which was absolutely delicious, washed down with a Speights Summer. This was just the right size, which left room for the Creme Brulee, which was the best ever. Very helpful and friendly staff, and I was made to feel welcome even as a solo diner. Thank you girls.

Excellent food and service

Visited on a public holiday without a reservation and staff were still very happy to help us with a meal. Amazing steak, cooked to perfection just how we ordered it. Brulee crack-perfect and delicious. Friendly attentive service, 5 stars!

Delicious Blue cod and well cooked steak!

Came here with husband and two children for dinner. Husband had blue cod, I had drunken steak and 13 year old had the chicken burger and 10 year old the fish kids meal. All meals were delicious, came out quickly and my steak was rare and cooked to perfection. Good service, nicely seated next to fireplace. Only discomfort was a cold breeze coming through legs from the back area. Apart from that brilliant experience.

Terrible food and service

Definitely the worst roast pork meal I have ever had. Meat was tough, crackling was inedible (you would need a hammer to break it) and veges were poorly cooked. Staff did not bother to check if our meals were okay and weren't interested when we went to pay and advised that the meals were not good.

I definitely will not be dining there again, nor will other members of our group. Firstly my wife and I ordered a bottle of wine off the wine list. We ordered a bottle of Mount Difficulty Pinot Gris, which is a central Otago wine. What arrived was a bottle of Roaring Meg Pinot Gris. I took this back and said this is not what I ordered. There was no Roaring Meg on the wine list only Mount Difficulty. As any wine drinkers will know these are two distinctly different wines. I was told that they are the same wine. I disagreed. I was told that Mt Difficulty was written under "Roaring Meg" so was the same wine. Nope wrong answer. I however endured the Roaring Meg as I did not want to deliberate it anymore, and to be fair it is not a bad wine. The point here is that "Roaring Meg" was not on the wine list. Secondly my main of the roast pork was awful. The crackling was that hard I could have used it as an offensive weapon and totally inedible. The meat was that tough I could have re-soled my shoes with it. Totally disappointed. I only chose the roast pork because the kitchen had run out of pork bellie at 6:00pm, just at the pinnacle of when everyone comes in to dine. How does that happen. A very poor dining experience.

Literally the worst meal I've ever had, McDonald's on a bad day is gourmet compared to what I was served. The one plus is my meal was comped but only after I made a loud complaint. 1 star is doing this place a favour.

Unintended but delicious visit

Having struggled on a wet, cold Wednesday night to find somewhere for dinner that was open but not at capacity we ended up at the Speights Ale House as a last resort. We got the last table there too! However we were soon won over by the friendly and efficient service. We ordered the ribs and the fish and chips to share and the ribs were good but the fish and chips were phenomenal. Crisp, thin batter around beautifully fresh piece of cod with crunchy chips and remarkably moreish side salad. 100% would return.

The Chowder was delicious served in a fresh bread bowl. There was some oyster included with the Chowder and would consider it the best seafood soup I have tasted in a long time. Steak and the lamb shank were as tender as so all in all definately worth a visit.

Nice Dinner 03/05/23

Enjoyed Dinner last night, meals were good, desserts were nice also. Only thing was I ordered a large blue cod meal $40+ and it was only one fillet (admittedly both sides of the fillet). From memory I thought you used to get more fish - especially for that price

Early dinner was excellent!

We got there for a very early dinner and they were friendly and helpful explaining the menu. Had the lamb dish and loved it. Very good home style cooking. Of course had a Speights beer with the meal! Wed' return again.

Fish and chips

A popular bar at the weekend and would recommend making a recommendation if you are a group wanting to eat here. They have a good selection of “pub grub” to select from. I had the fish and chips and it was very good. The only slightly disappointing part was after taking my order and serving my meal (which was very efficient) nobody came to see if I wanted a dessert when I finished my meal.

A lively pub with a good variety of menu options.

It was Saturday night and we were lucky to get the last table without a reservation. The live band was setting up and many patrons were locals. I ordered the mussels with a pork, bacon, tomato and bourbon base. It was delicious. The battered blue cod fish was fresh and crispy.

A Most Enjoyable Evening

We had dinner here recently and could not fault it. The restaurant was very busy but this did not affect the table service or food quality. We were really looking forward to our Blue Cod and chips and these didn’t disappoint. Excellent fresh fish, crispy batter and great chips all cooked perfectly. Top marks to our waiter and the rest of the team.

The only saving grace for this place was our waiter, Ben, absolutely top notch young man. Meals ordered were not cooked properly unfortunately, as minimal to say the least. Used to be big plates full of stunning food, now just manky meat and shriveled up spuds. Not an enjoyable evening

Outstanding service

Unfortunately my father had a panic attack not long after sitting down. Our utterly fabulous waitress was incredibly reassuring & kindly told us we could have our meal as a takeaway. We did this & had a lovely evening in the park. The food was top notch delicious & I cannot thank the entire restaurant enough. All the staff were outstanding & I will definitely go back.
