Great space for groups and good selection of food but it really needs an upgrade after all these years. Half of our table had their miso soup delivered after we’d finished our meals, as opposed to the rest which came straight away. Meals were ok...for the price but it’s not great Japanese food. The toilets are a state and the decor is dated.More

We ended up at The Jitsu after we found out that our original choice for a Japanese restaurant was closed. It was a blessing in disguise because we had a wonderful time. Our party of 8 was ushered to a section with low tables; we...sat on cushions on the floor - an experience which the teenagers in our group absolutely loved! The service was fantastic, the staff were all very friendly, efficient, and accommodating. And the food, on top of being very affordable, was delicious. My personal order, the 5-piece ebi tempura was the BEST ebi tempura that I've had in my 12-year stay in New Zealand! We will definitely eat at The Jitsu again the next time we visit Dunedin, and we highly recommend the place to everyone.More

I have never eaten in such a filthy restaurant, service terrible, had to wait to be seated while server chatted to other server, table not set, no water, menus greasy and revolting, drinks brought out when we were nearly finished, food very average, wine was...supposed to be Chard Farm but tasted like in was out of a box, tables too close together NO SOCIAL DISTANCING AT ALL! Used to love this place but will never go back. Has it changed hands?More

Really good food with clean tastes. We went early as I’m told it is often very busy. The prices were also modest. Staff were friendly

Jitsu used to be decent. It has been deteriorating over the past two years to the point it’s only really an option now when other favourites (such as Hana) are closed. Such was the early April Sunday night discussed here. There were four of us...and to be brutally honest, the wait staff were just not up to the job, appeared highly stressed and panicked (to the point of group was reassuring THEM). The food was - almost inedible. I have lived in Japan many years and go back regularly, and I have always thought Jitsu was less authentic than most local places, but the atmosphere and staff used to compensate for what it lacked in flavours.... however.... now - the food is terrible. The agedashi tofu was like rubber (even microwaved feel) and the broth wasn’t as it should have been. The rice was sludge. Hosomaki fell apart and we left 70% of it. My friend’s son enjoyed his donburi.... the place is dirty. Not sure what’s going on at Jitsu but I will never be going back.More

Was an absolute laugh and an experience like no other. Filthiest place I have ever eaten. They need to employ a cleaner. After seeing the toilets I could not stop laughing as it was soo filthy I thought I must be hallucinating. My jaw dropped...to the floor and I shoved the food down as I was soo hungry. Vice could do a 1 star review on this place. If you want top quality this is not the place for you. If you want a laugh this is probably the place for you.More

10 years ago was absolutely outstanding! Went in tonight and it is run down, terrible service, never received my drink and the food had no taste, bento box served with tomato sauce??? Everything was covered in tomato sauce and sweet chilli, rice was mash and...no Flavour. Got fully ignored once I made my complaint. So disappointed as it used to be my favourite Japanese restaurant to eat. So if I was you, choose another Japanese restaurant.More

I come here a bunch with my friends because it's a yummy place to eat :) It can be a lot of food for the price! I also have vegan friends, and this is a good place to bring them because there is a lot...of variety. The restaurant can be flexible with your meal as long as you ask them! They can get super busy though, so sometimes it would be better to book.More

Not good. Having spilt hot soup on my friend, there was no attempt to help him to A&E and no inquiry since to the state of his health. But oh yes! one would need contact details and they didn’t ask for those either. Very disappointing...behaviour. Thankfully no skin grafting or surgery required but this was seriously entertained. Never tried the food we ordered.More

It’s the first time I cannot finish a bento box in a Japanese restaurant which I truly disappointed... I’m sorry I have to give 1 star but I don’t think they cook the rice properly, I lived in Japan 3 years, and this is the...first time I was served by the rice all stick together, I thought I’m having rice paste The Kara age is very dry, the only thing I can finish in this box is pickle... My partner had a tendon, he said despite of prawns, other tempura are very wet.More
