Tripadvisor’s approach to reviews
Before posting, each Tripadvisor review goes through an automated tracking system, which collects information, answering the following questions: how, what, where and when. If the system detects something that potentially contradicts our community guidelines, the review is not published.
When the system detects a problem, a review may be automatically rejected, sent to the reviewer for validation, or manually reviewed by our team of content specialists, who work 24/7 to maintain the quality of the reviews on our site.
Our team checks each review posted on the site disputed by our community as not meeting our community guidelines.

Fantastic meal with great service. The food was excellent, the fish of the day was exquisite. Highly recommend the crème brûlée for dessert. Excellent service from both staff, can’t recommend highly enough

I asked to sit outside and once there, I waited. Eventually, the table got wiped and a set of cutlery deposited. No water, no " would you like to order...?", nothing, the waitress just went inside. I waited. I got up and tried to get...her attention. She saw me, acknowledged me, but that was that. I went back to my table, waited a bit longer and then decided to leave, not eager to extend an already disappointing experience and pay good money for it! What an astonishing lack of customer service, especially given the place was more than half empty! Will not recommend, nor return.More

Went for graduation dinner. Head waitperson "HWP" insisted we were early for our reservation which she had noted as half an hour later. We had confirmed the time with Chef by telephone earlier in the day, but we were told several times by HWP that...we were wrong. Table was available and we sat down to enjoy. Service was a little slow, despite restaurant emptying out. We ordered cocktails, and one cocktail did not have all the listed ingredients, so we asked about that and were told cocktails were pre-mixed before service, however the waitperson did mix a fresh cocktail with correct ingredients and was pleasant about it. Starters were lovely, then the mains came - one dish was the wrong order. HWP came back to our table and insisted that the wrong dish was what we had ordered and continued to imply that we were in the wrong, again! Finally got the right main and enjoyed the dishes. When we were just finished with dessert, another waitperson came up and said "Can I take these plates away?" Not bothering to ask if we had enjoyed our meal or anything like that, simply swiped away the plates. The venue is nice and the meals were tasty, but the service, particularly by the HWP, was very much lacking. I doubt I would go back for that reason.More

We booked a table at Two Chefs Bistro at 8pm on a Tuesday evening for a special celebration. The restaurant was quite quiet when we arrived and by the time the main course was served, we were the only diners. The food was passable -...a tournedos rossini, good steak cooked to rare perfection ... but the presentation sadly lacking and dull and (vitally) only lukewarm. The young waiting staff were clearly inexperienced and poorly trained. There is very little that is French about the place - not the ambiance and music (English pop classics played much too loudly and intrusively), not the food (superficially French, but essentially Kiwi in orientation) and definitely not the service which was clumsy and awkward. But the real issue was that just as we began eating the main course the staff started to re-arrange the tables - and I mean radically and noisily move all the tables and chairs into completely different configurations, When we protested the staff said that the manager had told them they had to do this for the following day graduation dinners. We asked to see the manager but were told he was not prepared to meet us. As the furniture removal continued we insisted that he appear and explain why we were subjected to eating a mediocre meal costing around $250 in what amounted to a furniture warehouse, He did finally show up and apologised - offering us a glass of cognac by way of compensation. But we had drunk enough and politely refused, expecting that he would adjust the bill to compensate for such a dreadful evening. Perhaps inevitably the bill remained unadjusted. Our recommendation is to avoid this place.More

Absolutely fabulous dining in city centre. Warm and friendly greeting from Katie who looked after us for the evening. Had prawns with panzanella and Bloody Mary sorbet to start - fantastic flavours! For main, the venison was cooked perfectly! Would highly recommend.

Stellar staff and food. Leve (?sp) French person was the wait person. Fixed menu as it was rugby night. The food was exquisite. I seldom give 5’s but this place is class. Service ambience great. Background music just right volume

Foodie night number one. Old school with nothing too experimental. Actually, not really foodie at all. Older crowd as they arrived. Walk-in at 5:30 and was lucky enough to get a table. By 6:30 the tables were filled! Get a reservation or you won’t be...eating here. Music playing quietly in the background so it was silent Potato focaccia: focaccia was excellent by itself and crazy good with the smoked butter. Yes yes yes Beet and spinach salad: loved the beets with spinach and feta. Big yes. Lamb shoulder (this was gonna be an experience since this is the first time for lamb shoulder): It had lamb flavor and meat melted in my mouth, surrounded by sauce and cooked down veggies. I’d order it again. Fully return here…although it had kinda an older crowd and not really foodie. Really excellent service.More

Stopped for a coffee during our evening walk on our first night in Dunedin, even though they were nearly closing the friendly staff welcomed us. We had lovely coffees and the most Devine chocolate truffles to go with the coffee!

Wonderful ambience, well located, good menu, excellent wine, beer and cocktail lists with professional staff. This is traditional, quality fine dining with friendly attitudes. Food is very good, fresh and tasty. My only other comment is that the seafood Linguini could have had more quality...seafood for the price. Credit cards have a surcharge.More

We dined out at 2 Chefs for my daughter's graduation recently. Absolutely loved the food and the service. There was a set menu for the graduation dinner which was great as I knew how much it was going to cost. The males in the group...had the fillet steak and they both raved about it. Perfectly cooked and tender. The ladies had the blue cod which was beautifully cooked and very tasty. Panna cotter dessert was divine. I would definitely come back again for a celebration dinner. Excellent service as well:)More

Fabulous and nearly faultless. Service, winelist, cocktails and food is all exceptional. It is also extremely clean inside. I personally think the decor is a little sparse in the main section and I always avoided it in the past because I don't think the exterior...is welcoming. How wrong I was!More

I have visited this Bistro on every trip to Dunedin, maybe five times. Sixth time was more fun than usual. Food was,as always perfectly cooked the beef melted. Great wine and the service from Paige and the others was delightful. As a solo diner, they...kept their distance but also engaged in an easy going way. A night not to be forgotten by me. If you appreciate quality well cooked and served food, can't be beaten in my view.More

We walked in on a Friday night without a booking and were welcomed by a very nice young man & quickly seated at a lovely table in the window. My husband enjoyed the special dinner and wine deal and I had a vegetarian option with...a lovely trio of ice-cream & sorbet to follow. The staff were every happy to swap one of the ice-cream flavours for me and it was all exceptionally good. We would highly recommend this restaurant for a special occasion and we're so glad we called in. The service could not be faulted. Lovely atmosphere in the building itself too and tables well spaced out.More
