We found Speights Alehouse on a walk through Duneden and decided to stop for lunch. The lunch menu was quite large and some items seemed expensive for a pub lunch. Lunch was ordered and we enjoyed a drink while waiting. We could have had 3 or 4 by the time our meals arrived. To be fair, the meal was exceptionally nice. I could not finish the meal. In fact, if I had managed to finish my vegetables, I estimate that I would have consumed my 3 months quota of peas and mashed potatoes by meals end. This is not to say it was a bad meal, but once ordered, the staff spent more time talking than serving and we seemed to no longer exist. There were less than 25 guest in the pub and not all were eating but it still took a long time for our meals to arrive. A nice tasty lunch but a long wait.

We were in there for lunch and we had both had Bangers and Mash James (Speight’s Porter Sausage & Mash Locally made porter sausages, served on potato mash and topped with caramelised onion, peas and gravy. Main served with Ale House Bread. It was really good food and good value.

My wife and I (from England) were on a cruise around New Zealand and knew about this place, so we called in about lunchtime for refreshments. The staff are extremely friendly, welcoming and knowledgeable about their products. An excellent place to call in or meet up with friends. Recommended.

A group of 8 of us friends came into dine in for lunch. We all loved our meals and nice customer service - nice to try some of the Speights beers on tap to get a head start before our Speights Brewery tour following straight after lunch. We liked it so much we came back in after the tour to try some more beers haha.

If you don't really want to hear what your friends have to say but still want a good meal, this is the place. Service was quick, food tasted great, filling portions, nice loud pub feel to the joint. You don't go here for the view of anything so the large TV's mounted around the place give you something to do since your not going to hear your friend talking at you! Had the Blue Cod and the Lamb shanks- both were very nice. Recommend reservations for any weekend evening.

To be honest we booked here because there are so few places open in Dunedin on a Sunday night. However we were delighted with the food snd the service and will be going back. The service was first class given that the place was packed. There was a good selection on the menu snd the prices very reasonable. I had beef schnitzel a generous serving tender and delicious. It's not gourmet food but if you want a good tasty meal at a reasonable price in convivial surroundings then this is for you

Consistently high quality food, full of flavour and well presented. I had drunken steak with garlic butter (that included whole cloves of garlic), salad and fries. The steak melted in my mouth it was so juicy and tender. Others had chicken parcels and said they were delicious. I had chocolate hazelnut cheesecake (cheesecake flavour of the day) for dessert with coffee. Oooohhh it was so good (picture included). One had berry mountain and other had chocolate mud cake (pictures included). Delicious. Drinks were mixed perfectly. The manager is so friendly and welcoming every time. Delicious delicious delicious!!

We stopped here for lunch and it was amazing. There was a lot of choice on the menu so deciding what to have took a while as it all looked great. Eventually we both had delicious braised beef with an ale gravy and peas on creamy mashed potato. The portion sizes were really generous and very good value for money. Coffee was also very good. Service was excellent and the staff were very friendly. The only complaint would be that we were too full to take advantage of the dessert menu! Would definitely recommend.

Great value and plentiful mainly beef-based pub grub served alongside a good range of Speights brews. Central location. Generally quite busy, restaurant area requires reserving, but plenty of pub tables available. Friendly staff.

We dined here on our final night in Dunedin. It was within walking distance from our accommodation which was great. I had blackboard special of Pasta and my husband had entree size banger and mash. Both were very tasty and served quickly. We finished off with Pavlova and Salted Caramel Cheesecake again both blackboards special. Desserts were very tasty. Definitely recommend

Was in a group of 20- fast service from pleasant staff. The lamb was a large plate of lettuce with 5 rather well-done bite-size pieces of meat, but tasty. Given the size of my main, I was looking forward to the dessert, but got the thinnest piece of lemon meringue imaginable (actually half the size of my neighbour's!). Again, tasty and nicely presented with cream and ice cream, but far too small. I went home and ate a chicken leg and crackers with hummus to fill up! Maybe this was something to do with being in a large group with a $40 special, but very poor value. Very noisy place too.

We were recommended to visit Speight’s Alehouse by a local that we happened to meet in England before our trip. On reaching Dunedin this was the first place we looked at and had an incredible meal, sampling the wide variety of beers available. When it came to selecting a place to eat for our second evening in Dunedin there was only one place we were heading! Again, exceptional food, great service by very friendly staff and great ales. Our only regret is that we move on tomorrow 😢

My “Blue ‘n’ Gold” (fish and chips) was served cold. And the supposedly (according to the menu) cooked medium rare venison was served well done. But the beer is good and the atmosphere is nice.

Excellent meal with plenty to choose from for both adults and children. Service slightly slow due to small number of staff sort of like they were not anticipating as many as actually turned up for lunch? Wait time was a little long between drinks and dessert time.

We can always depend on a Speight’s Ale house. Have eaten at most of them - and they’re always dependable for a fair-priced, hearty tasty meal. Whether we’re in the mood for a big meal.. or just a soup or something small.. we’re always satisfied and know we’re going to get something good. First time tonight for us at the Dunedin branch - and it didn’t disappoint. Just had the bangers and mash this time and it was great.
