Tripadvisor’s approach to reviews
Before posting, each Tripadvisor review goes through an automated tracking system, which collects information, answering the following questions: how, what, where and when. If the system detects something that potentially contradicts our community guidelines, the review is not published.
When the system detects a problem, a review may be automatically rejected, sent to the reviewer for validation, or manually reviewed by our team of content specialists, who work 24/7 to maintain the quality of the reviews on our site.
Our team checks each review posted on the site disputed by our community as not meeting our community guidelines.

Greeted by friendly staff who were very knowledgeable about the many fish on offer, that we were unfamiliar with and they took the time to explain it to us. The food was delicious and so fresh; the best sea food we have eaten ever. The restaurant was very busy and the whole team worked like a well-oiled machine. Good work guys and a joy to dine there.

This was recommended to us by a former Otago uni student and was well worth the walk over the tracks. The restaurant was warm and inviting with a wealth of retro treasures on display. The food was plentiful, fresh, full of flavour and good value. Overall we loved the genuine family feel, the variety of seafood and relaxed dining experience.

My husband and I went for a quiet meal. Private yet buzzing ambience which is fabulous. Stunning interesting surroundings of collectables from years of collecting . (Well Done) the service was beyond excellent. The food was locally sourced as much as possible and the seafood cooked lovingly with the right condiments . The sides were so fresh and simply cooked to perfection . The Artichoke Risotto was the best , for a fussy risotto person .. I’ve been away far too long , after much travel In NZ and overseas in last couple months .... Plato beats them all ! 6 stars !

We dined here on a Monday night recently. I’m going to say my Hapuka was inedible. I never thought to ask if it would be fresh or recently defrosted. The Brussel Sprouts were overcooked and dripping in Curry sauce. If you like huge portions this might be for you. It was definitely quantity over quality. We ate here 2 years ago and loved it. Sadly not this time.

What a fantastic find! We both think this is the best fish restaurant we’ve ever eaten at. The paua fritters were a great introduction to my novice pallet. Followed by seared tuna and kingfish. The rice and dressings were an excellent complement to the perfectly cooked fish. Great service and cool, quirky decor! Bare in mind, this is a fish restaurant; so maybe not so suitable for vegetarians/vegans!

Ate at Plato tonight. My moki fish in lemon butter was flakey and so tasty, husband’s fish pie rich and flavoursome. We shared a pate to start and that was plenty for 2. The servings are large. Service cheerful and friendly and fast. Decent wine list. No music ... YEA! I hate loud restaurants. Fun, eclectic decor, very relaxed. The best meal we’ve had in 3 days in lovely Dunedin.

You enter through a crazy door with lots of marine bric a brac. OPen that door and your are greeted by a buzy, busy restaurant. A warm smile of welcome by Rose, (she is probably the BEST service person I have ever had, she should give lessons on how to be a super front of house). The food was amazing and even though the place was really busy, we didn't have to wait long. Scallops, and squid was our first entrees, followed by Fishpie (!!!), blue cod and salmon fillet, all cooked to perfection and came beautiful and hot. We didn't take much convincing for dessert and had creme brulee, the brownie and lemon cheesecake. The wine and spirit list was extensive. LOve you guys!! We will be back. Thanks so much for a lovely evening.

We had read a fair amount or reviews on this restaurant and they were all positive. We were not disappointed. We had a great table at the window surrounded by a history in Temuka pottery. The decor in our world was funky, others will feel differently, but the food does all the talking here. The Paua fritters were a trip down memory lane from prior NZ days and delicious. The Fish and Tuna mixed with the ginger carrots were served to perfection. These meals are generous,so be aware if afters is your thing. We sampled 4 restaurants across Dunedin during our stay, all of them listed in ”best of” across Urban list, Qantas travel, Google etc etc, and Plato was the winner for us. It felt like we were home with family and a Michelin chef just turned up and wowed us. Congrats Plato.

My husband was wanting to sample some fresh seafood and he sure got that at Plato’. The entree of ‘Queens scallops’ were oozing flavour and were delectable. His seafood pie was a winner and he couldn’t finish it all. (That never happens) He was raving about how good it was. Flavour flavour flavour

Nigel and his team are fantastic, the 'food is the star' and the people who serve it are gracious, well informed and friendly. We all ordered the Kingfish, it was magnificent, the fish was fresh, the sauces were taste sensations that did not overpower the fish. My colleague turned and said to me 'I have just returned from Melbourne and we did not eat anything as good as this'. The menu and staff service are excellent.

The focus in this restaurant is on seafood and they do a great job with it. The menu is interesting and a little inventive and there is a good range of options. The wine list complements the menu and the staff are attentive. Decor is eccentric and a great conversation starter as you recognise pieces of crockery and knick knacks that remember from your past The only niggle is that the location is very hard to find, hidden under an overpass and cycle bridge. Better signage so that those from out of town can find it would be great.

We really enjoyed our meal here. The choice of fish was pretty broad, and they were prepared in innovative ways. The French/NZ gentleman who looked after us on the night could not have been more helpful, including very good advice on how visitors to Dunedin might best spend their time. Highly recommended.

We asked about gluten free when we sat down but then got so excited about the menu forgot to specify gf for hubby when we ordered. Realised we got non-gf dish when it arrived but it looked so good I said I would have it alongside my order. They quickly got hubby the gf version. When we left they totally refused to let us pay for the extra dish. Amazing. The dish was the whole flounder in caper and butter sauce. Sensational. My other dish was the kingfish special of the day with a berry sauce. Very good dish. But to be honest, the flounder was the star and I would have happily paid for it twice. Highly recommend Plato for menu, decor and terrific staff.

Excellent meal! The calamari with salad in a sesame dressing was a great starter. Pork belly yummy. Tuna main was a special but the best tuna steak we’ve had. Fish pie was generous with smoked fish.

This was our second visit to Plato. The standard was just as high as our first visit a year earlier. There are a wide variety of local fish to choose from, and they can be prepared in a variety of ways to suit your taste. The gentleman who served us-I think he was French-was very helpful in assisting us to choose the menu options that suited us best. Highly recommended if you want to experience NZ seafood.
