Fabulous pasta and pizza - we went twice. Pizzas were a perfect size with the perfect crust and the right amount of toppings. Pasta was also perfect and the gluten free pasta was freshly made fettuccine - such a treat.
This was one of the few places we found that let us bring our own wine and the corkage was only $7.00. Brilliant !!

We come here every time we come to Dunedin because the atmosphere is awesome and the food and service are really good too.
It appeals to a wide range of people - young and old, groups and couples and well off as well as those just wanting a decent cheap and cheerful. It’s busy, bustling and brilliant. The building itself is beautiful and I love admiring all the details in the dining room.
Ok, it might not be true authentic Italian but the pizza selection caters for everyone and the pastas do too. For wine you can BYO or choose from a pretty good wine list - the choice is yours. And it is damn cheap. We can barely dine out anywhere for under $100 these days and we never spend in excess of that here. Love, love, love!
Dunedin you have a gem - we always recommend you to everyone we know for a very good night out when they visit.

A true Italian restaurant, noisy the way they should be. The food was excellent and the same with the service. The restaurant is very large and by the number of people dining and waiting to be seated, the food had to be good.
The food prices were average for an Italian restaurant and there was a large selection of wines, also at reasonable prices.

Can't fault the staff who were welcoming and plesant although the atmosphere was extremely noisey which was uncomfortable.( Like a large hall) The food was classed as italian which I would not agree with its average pizza and pasta with no italian touch or taste. The pasta was poor with more sauce and olives than could imagine to be ever served in an italian dish. The pizza was Ok could eat the pizza again.

The front of house staff was great and the waitress generally attentive, but struggled to hear anything said to her. The food however was disappointing. I had formaggi pizza (4 cheeses) and it was completely drenched in parmesan was literally like eating a bowl of dry parmesan cheese. The starter salad was boring and we left without even trying the dessert. This is NOT a top 5 restaurant in Dunedin. In fact, it is not even top 2 italian.

We are new to Dunedin and have eaten at Etrusco now four times with friends and family. So.. how was it? Well to be a bit blunt, we won't be going back. I just can't see how many people think the food and service is so wonderful. As Brooksie said below (June 14) , each time we have gone, the service is a bit hit and miss. The staff seem to rush round and don't seem to be enjoying the experience at all. The food we think is just average at best. Everyone thought the Pasta was tasty and well...only OK. Pizza we all thought was again just OK - nothing special. Each time we have gone, we have all commented at the time taken to be served and the last time we went ( a few nights ago), we waited at least 30 minutes for a pasta and small pizza, and 15 - 20 minutes for a tiramisu. Also (as Brooksie) said, it was 'lack lustre'. So... just a 5 out 10 really.

Well first to call this an Italian restaurant should offend most Italians. But since they are number 2 in the local market I assume they are well aware of their audience.
My partner and I are vegetarian. We were on a bike tour and made that clear to the tour management. We arrived to what they call “The Banquet”.
Perhaps the tour operator didn’t let them know but when I asked the manager if we could get a couple of plates of vegetables with “The Banquet” he explained that I had come to the wrong restaurant. We agreed with him and left.
In fairness he did make an attempted reconciliation at the door but I’m not much on being told to leave and then asked to stay.
Hey they’re busy and good for them. But the world is changing fast so I’d strongly suggest getting on the program and being prepared to put something vegetarian on the table.

The food here is always good, unfortunately the service was below average. The restaurant was not busy (about half occupied) and the food came out separately, and when mine arrived it wasn't the correct dish. Once my food arrived, it was very good as usual. I have been several times and the food is always good (although it can take a while to come out), the service is always average, despite the wait staff being friendly enough.

I ordered a gluten free Carbonara which my husband shared and agreed it was delicious. He ordered Puttonesca which he found to be too full flavoured despite him liking olive and anchovies. We gave the restaurant feedback and were offered a refund. The remainder of the meal was delicious. There's was a really good ambiance, the service was great and the place was packed despite it being a Monday. We'd definitely go back.

This was our last night in Dunedin. It was a Sunday night and there were quite a few places closed. We spotted this place and walked in with no reservation. The gentleman at reception said straight away lets see what we can do for you, and found us a nice table. We had expected this place to be empty but it was buzzing and full. The decor made me feel we were in Milan. The mains are only Pizza or Pasta and they were happy to give me another pasta as I am not keen on Penne. Everything was not a problem. Am looking forward to going back again.

Delicious and well prepared. We both had Pasta with garlic bread. Service was friendly and prices were average. Dinner x 2, drinks x 2, garlic bread x 2 $88.00
Hungry so forgot photos but you won't be disappointed

I am astonished to see the good reviews this place has received - perhaps either from the travellers since they do not care about food or from the regular visitors who do not understand food, or the third one, who visit the place only to drink alcohol.
We decided to try this place with family and were completely shocked to see the quality of the dishes we had. Our concern is not with the restaurant, but the people in the kitchen who take guests for granted.
First Dish: a vegetarian pizza: it was instantaneously delivered to us in less than 4.5 minutes. When we checked the bread was uncooked inside with a layer of moistness underneath it (honestly it felt like they bought a pack of the readymade base from a nearby supermarket and reheated it in a microwave). We didn't eat that and when the staff noticed, we showed to them what was wrong with it. They humbly apologised and replaced it with another one, which was no different either.
Second Dish: a vegetarian spaghetti that was again undercooked and we could feel the rawness. We didn't finish that either. The only food that was strictly ok was the garlic bread.
For our redemption, we went to a Chinese takeaway near Uni afterwards and had $2.90 shoestring-fries that was way more fulfilling and worth.

Above average Italian food. Service a bit hit and miss. Good to train staff in what Gin Is available. Some servers gave the impression they didn’t want to be at work. Food 7 out 10. Nonno Pasta main course was just ok. Pizza Diverso a Little overcooked and didn’t like the dried oregano sprinkled on top. Tiramisu semi freddo was pretty lack lustre in flavour. Affogato alcohol option including very good coffee a great end of meal drink. Nice restaurant ambience.

We were a largish group of 11 and so we were locked into the banquet, at $39pp. We were overall not very impressed with the experience for the following reasons: The first course, which was anti-pasto platters, had bread and dry condiments, but no sauces , which would have been expected with crusty bread. The pizza was OK but we were promised 4-6 main pasta dishes and can't recall that many arriving. The subsequent portions for 11 people were very small. On the plus side the dessert was well liked by everyone. The service was poor. At one point I had to head towards the kitchen to ask a waiter to come over and take some more drinks orders and there were 3 standing in a huddle talking to each other. One said, 'oh that's embarrassing, we are all standing around doing nothing'. Someone also had to ask how long the desserts would be. We would probably look elsewhere next time we dined out as a group.

This place is a classic Dunedin restaurant; it is always tasty and reliable. The ambience is also lovely; it always transports me to Italy (even when there are (often) rowdy dinner groups).
That being said, I have never understand why Etrusco is *so* revered by other Dunedinites. The pasta is good, but has never ever blown me away, or gotten remotely close to doing so. As I said, it’s tasty and reliable but I don’t really love to paying upwards of $20 per plate for just tasty and reliable. I wish, at the price, at least the actual pasta itself was of a higher quality, like they use at the Esplanade or even Gaslight when they used to make their own. Often I leave thinking “I could have made that myself” - maybe I’m looking for the wrong things? I‘ve had people say that it’s because it’s “simple authentic Italian food” but, having been to Italy on multiple occasions, I’m not convinced that it’s particularly authentic.
I’ve never had a bad meal at Etrusco; but I’ve also never had one that I loved either.
