This cafe went back in time when sliced bread and butter were served on the table ! It served very fresh fish, oysters and chips, and was inexpensive. We had a good dinner in a cold winter night !

Absolutely outstanding! A walk back in time to a simple era where the food was sourced down the road, cooked fresh and delivered with a smile!! The fish was coated in a light tempura style batter and cooked to perfection, the Blue Cod is melt...More

Fish n chips has always been my favourite takeaway but have been left disappointed by the many I’ve tried around New Zealand until I discovered the Best Cafe in Dunedin. I purchased takeaways to bring home for Dads birthday - also a lover of good...More

Personally my family dont like the fish and chips because of the beef dripping. We felt it too greasy. Waiting time for the food to serve is quite long too. We waited for about 30minutes to take away at dinner time.

If you want fish or oysters this is the place to go. Parking can be a problem so give yourself time to find a park.

I had my fish and chips takeaway. I was very satisfied. My fish was well cooked and both fish and chips were not too oilly. The price was reasonable as well.

The Best Cafe is a Dunedin institution and lives up to its name. I pass through Dunedin infrequently and always try to make it here for lunch. Their seafood is always fresh and superbly cooked and presented. Had Bluff Oysters and salad today. Great service...More

Established in 1932 the Best Cafe is a Dunedin icon. It has been through World War II and the Great Depression and has changed very little over the last 85 years it has been trading. I am very lucky to be running a restaurant that was originally started by my great-grandfather and then passed down to his son and family through until the 1980's. The following proprietors kept the traditions alive to maintain the Best Cafe's great reputation. As the proud owner of our old family restaurant my aim is to provide a truly unique dining experience, one where we can provide old fashioned, friendly service alongside a delicious plate of fresh, local seafood, golden hand cut chips and the best Bluff Oysters in New Zealand. If you want to take a trip down Nostalgia Lane and taste some traditional New Zealand fare then this is the place to visit. We are open the hours specified but we advise you to call to check if we are open for public holidays as these can vary according to time of year.
