If you like your fish & chips or oysters then this is the place to go. If your partner just likes the plain fry up then they'll be happy here.

We went to the best cafe twice, once to dine in and once takeaway. The dine is a retro NZ experience with oldsters furnishings, bread and butter serves with your food. I enjoyed the blue cod both times and would recommend this to any fish...More

This Best Cafe was indeed serving good fish and chips. It reminds me of English fish and chips (without the peas) and there was a good selection of fish. Tried the whitebait pattie and it was like omelette, but tastier. Good meal!

Situated just down from the Octagon, we had lunch here. Reminded me very much of an old style English seaside cafe serving fresh fish. I tried the Whitebait Pattie which was like a flattened omelette with whitebait. Got to say it was very good. My...More

Established in 1932 the Best Cafe is a Dunedin icon. It has been through World War II and the Great Depression and has changed very little over the last 85 years it has been trading. I am very lucky to be running a restaurant that was originally started by my great-grandfather and then passed down to his son and family through until the 1980's. The following proprietors kept the traditions alive to maintain the Best Cafe's great reputation. As the proud owner of our old family restaurant my aim is to provide a truly unique dining experience, one where we can provide old fashioned, friendly service alongside a delicious plate of fresh, local seafood, golden hand cut chips and the best Bluff Oysters in New Zealand. If you want to take a trip down Nostalgia Lane and taste some traditional New Zealand fare then this is the place to visit. We are open the hours specified but we advise you to call to check if we are open for public holidays as these can vary according to time of year.
