I had been eagerly anticipating trying NZ blue cod and this restaurant did not disappoint! Served fried in beer batter with a delicious side of salad and washed down with local Emerson's pilsner, it was a meal that I will remember. Service was very good, the price was reasonable and while the setting was a bit spartan we had a nice view of Portobello harbor. Historic building in small village on the Otago Peninsula, I will be returning before we leave for more of the same!

Our two families came into this pub for dinner and were directed to the ‘pool room’. This room was small cramped and not conducive to having a meal together. Upon inquiring if we could split into two tables in the dining room where there was ample room we were told by we assume the manager all those tables were booked. So we had no option but to sit outside on Picnic tables. Service from Our young waiter was excellent however the dining room tables remained empty. Food was good but expensive when you are sitting at a picnic table outside. We left feeling very disappointed with the manager’s level of service.

Four of us ate dinner at this establishment. We had booked a table the previous night and had a table with wonderful water views. I ordered the Blue Cod which was very tasty. Husband raved about the Blue Cod wrapped in bacon with garlic sauce. The rib eye steak ordered by my sister was deemed very tender and delicious, while my brother-in-law was very happy with his Seafood Basket. It was better than we all expected and we left entirely satisfied.

Dined here for an evening meal. Hostess was pleasant enough but did not really smile or seem very engaged with her customers. Menu was pricey for a pub especially since the restaurant down the road (which sadly wasn't open) had burgers advertised for $6-$7 less. It was a long wait for our meals considering there were only a few tables occupied. Fries were beautifully cooked. Falafel burger was OK. Falafel lacked flavour and was overcooked and dry. The cheese was tough. The other meal of the meat burger was enjoyable.

Today we visited the Portobello Hotel and Bistro to order takeaway fish and chips for our mother who had just lost her husband a few weeks ago, so decided to take her out for the day. When ordering, we asked the lovely young girl who was taking our order if we were able to eat our fish and chips at the outside tables. She was unsure and asked the lady with the blond long hair if this was possible (I am assuming that this was the manager). The main hostess replied very abruptly. Instead of answering courteously, she answered our question really abruptly and didn't crack a smile the whole time we were there. She was stomping around behind the bar, like she was on a mission. I pitied the lovely waitresses who worked there who were absolutely lovely and had what is required for the hospitality industry. In my opinion, the hostess needs to go to charm school if she is working in this industry. Needless to say the fish and chips were cooked fast and were lovely to eat. I would just like to say how the main hostess tainted our day and I hope she doesn't do this to other visitors to Dunedin.

The food was fine but honestly I wouldn't recommend you stop here, spend your money somewhere else. The staff urgently need some Customer service lessons. We were directed to a table but when the waitress saw there was 9 of us she said we can't sit here & pointed to a separate room on the other side of the building, you have to go over there! She was grumpy & very unfriendly. We did stay for a drink & some snacks but honestly were on the verge of getting up & leaving as any request seemed too much trouble.

On our first trip to this area. We decided to have a nice meal in this lovely tavern. Being in our prime of life now, we like to enjoy nice scenery. I made my way to table with sea view. Waiter says no and points to a very tiny table shoved in the corner. I told my partner we are in the naughty corner. I had an awesome view of the wall. If we were love struck teens it would have been fine. as we would only have eyes for one another. The food was lovely, it wasn’t like it was packed, the two middle tables were empty the whole time we were there. We spent over $70 so felt disappointed we had a table with no view. We were trying to make it a special night, after the hard year we had had. You might as well write on the wall naughty corner, you might get a lot of couples who think it’s neat to sit there. Just not us who had recently become pensioners and I have a disability. It spoilt the great evening we anticipated.

Super rude staff! We went there a few months ago and asked for lunch. The waitress walked to the kitchen and asked if they were still doing lunch. The kitchen swore about the annoying people asking for lunch... they were really rude about it and then proceeded to bitch about us behind the counter! If you ever go to portobello don’t bother coming here, just cross the road to rics fish and chips or to 1908!

Stopped here for lunch after our Wildlife Tour. I visited here some 5 years ago and remember the best ever Seafood Chowder so hoped that it was still as good... and .... YES YES YES, best ever Seafood Chowder!!! Others enjoyed the Blue Cod so we were a very contented group after lunch and a glass of wine.

OK for a meal; not a lot of choice around so we opted to have dinner here. The burgers were a substantial size; the lamb pattie was a disappointment and tasted a bit odd; we were expecting a nice piece of tender, melt in your mouth shredded lamb, especially considering all the wee lambs frolicking in the countryside. Pricey too considering it's location. Nice fries; friendly staff

A classic New Zealand pub/bistro at the heart of the Otago Peninsular. Fish and Chips, Burgers and other expected pub/bistro fair is always good quality and generously portioned. The Seafood Chowder is renowned as one of the best in NZ (was told by staff the chef worked on deep sea fishing boats before a career change and brings that experience into the kitchen). The chef's passion and kitchen really shine with the 'specials' which seem to constantly change. Tonight's Fillet steak with mushroom filo, vegetables, blue cheese sauce and beetroot ?smear? was up with the best dishes I've eaten in some very top-end restaurants. A hidden gem well worth the trek... the specials far surpassing normal bistro fare.

Stopped in for some lunch and tried the Blue Cheese & Cauliflower soup, genuinely stunning. This small pub/restaurant on the Otago Peninsula never fails to impress with kai that is as good & often better than any high end restaurant in the lower South Island. I'll be back... again ... and again.

When travelling I often try out one of my favourite dishes, seafood chowder, and without a doubt, here is one of the best I have experienced. I have come back for various other dishes and found them to be of the same high standard. Highly recommend!

Outstanding yet again. And they’re lifted the bar even higher for ‘pub’ food. This would put most restaurants to shame. Tonight’s special was aged beef fillet Mignon. But taken to the next level with a beautiful dumpling and superb blue cheese cream sauce. The vegetables were not just an accompaniment or afterthought either, but delicious in their own right. A Dunedin icon.

We returned to this restaurant after a visit 4 years ago and still found the food delicious. The special was a rack of lamb which was very tasty. My husband had the barbecued ribs. We came back a second night and I had the bacon wrapped blue cod, very nice.
