My mum took me for my belated birthday. Staff are young and kind of disinterested just going through the motions. Not what you expect in friendly Dunedin at a high end restaurant. Benger Gold Juices are the best but $6.00 a small bottle is pushing it. A shared Mediterranean beef entree was $23 and arrived cold with slightly gristly meat. It was plentiful but a disappointing start. My main of fish (Bluenose from memory) was delicious. Pumpkin, zucinni and red pepper vege was delicious and abundant. Fish a bit meaty for my liking. $38 My mothers chicken she said was nice but there was a sour vegetable that we couldn't quite place that spoiled it a bit. $38. The side of broccolini $11 was not impressive and too expensive for a side dish. It had a grey looking sauce and was undercooked. The Bomb Alaska desert was delicious though should be at $16. Overall my mum had built it up and I don't think it quite measured up to my expectations.

We took 10 of us for a family dinner on Tues 29th Dec and No 7 Balmac delivered in spades. We had a lovely waitress Claudia, whom looked after us all night, with such friendly amazing service. Nothing was a bother, she was attentive, professional, and always had a smile. She knew her menu well and recommended how many "small dishes" we bought for our shared starters for the table. The food was incredible, starting with all the shared plates, tomato bruschetta, beetroot lentil hummus and lamb belly croquettes and then everyones mains. We had vegetarian mains, pork belly, venison, steak and chicken mains and they were all cooked to perfection. The atmosphere was relaxing and we were downstairs, and were able to watch the chefs in action in the kitchen.
I highly recommend No 7 Balmac to anyone who would love a wonderful dinning experience.

The meals were good and the drinks list was extensive, with warm comfortable surroundings and friendly staff. It isn't a cheap eat, by the time you add a side dish of salad or fries, it can be a bit pricey. Like a number of other places lately, their use of spices and salt tend to be a little heavy handed. These are much better left to the individual to apply in my opinion and the typeface on the menu was not the easiest to read in subdued lighting.

The food was really expensive for the quality. When one pay a main 32 dollars one expect the food to be very high quality. I ordered falafels. I am a big fan of falafels and make them quite often and these ones were almost burnt like. I could just taste the burnt taste and nothing else. i tried the cheese soufflée and it was served in a white weird sauce. It didn't taste like cheese at all. (I am french so I know what I'm talking about.). As a result I was still hungry after eating these two dishes.
I believe this restaurant is trying to be too posh but doesn't even offer the quality of a posh food.

When I book a table for dinner I for 7 p.m. I have an expectation that I might be eating by 7.30 or so.. What I don’t expect is to be told by a waitress at 7.30 that she can’t take our order as the kitchen is too busy. I prevailed and eventually the first of our three main courses arrived at 8.15.. followed 3 minutes later by the second and four minutes later by the third. This is something I have never encountered before and showed that the restaurant is clearly seating more customers than it can cope with in an orderly manner. Which is a shame as previous visits here have been extremely good. And a mixed verdict on the food. The first of our dishes was marinated lamb shoulder on crushed lentils. The sauce that accompanied this was delicious but the lamb was overcooked and quite chewy.. The spiced bely pork was perfectly cooked but the sauce was overpowering and far too salty. The beetroot cured Salmon was fine. Acccompanying hand-cut ships were first class. And to finish a sticky date and pear pudding went down very well when shared by all three of us. So overall a disappointing experience with a couple of bright moments. Sadly I won’t be hurrying back to Number 7 Balmac anytime soon.

My friend and I went in tonight to try and get some dessert, we asked for a table and the waiter was about to seat us, when the, what I’m assuming is the manager, stopped taking an order from a table to tell us that there is nothing available for an hour. He then proceeded to seat the two people behind us, and there were tables available. We understand that we may not have spent as much money as someone who was there for a main meal but that should not be reason for being embarrassed in front of the other customers and turned away. We would’ve been happy to sit at the bar if the tables were strictly for dinner paying customers

Hi Maddied705,
I'm very sorry that we couldn't accommodate you for dessert last night.
The small team we had on were doing the best they could to look after our reservations.
We are doing our best to manage staff absence due to Covid, while still welcoming our guests.
I'd like to apologise that we couldn't fit you in straight away last night. You are always welcome to join us for a drink or dessert, and it's very unusual for us not to be able to look after you immediately.
kind regards,
Katrina Toovey

We had a family lunch here on the 28th of November to celebrate my elderly mother's Birthday, and were served by Ralph. He was exceptional in the customer service that he provided to us - the best I've ever encountered. The food was delicious as well.

The food was full of flavour and vegetarians are well catered for.
I loved how the waitress was attentive but did not keep disturbing us as a lot of restaurants do.
My son ordered a Vegetarian burger and asked for no avocado. The burger came with Avo so he just scrapped it off. The waitress noticed this and when we asked for dessert menus apologized for the Avo and deducted a dessert from the final bill without us complaining or being concerned about it.

Following our day of drinking at the Dunedin Beer Festival we decided to take it easy and enjoy a bit of fine dining at the lovely bistro. 10 of us were seated quite easily downstairs and we enjoyed a great selection of drinks and food. Took the restaurant a bit of time to prepare everything but we were happy to take it easy.

Heard so much about this place but was a little disappointed. My chosen octopus entree was all sold out. Very little else to choose. Had pork belly which was okay - nothing startling. Finished with coffee and cheese. Coffee came and drank it whilst waiting for the cheese which took ages. When it arrived, it was one little triangle of blue cheese, some thin slices of pear, orange slices and a few biscuits- very disappointing as normally you’d have at least 3 cheeses.

We had dinner at No 7 on a busy Friday night, me and my husband. He chose the tuna which looked amazing and I had the duck. I was a bit surprised that my dish was mostly room temperature and when the waitress came and asked how things were I questioned whether this was the intention. She went to check and immediately the maitre d' came over and offered to replace the dish. I said no because it was still delicious and he then said he would take the dish off our bill. Very generous and very responsive to my query. We continued to have dessert, which was equally delicious, the coffee creme was superb!
We came away feeling valued as customers and also completely happy with the beautiful food. It was a great dining experience and attentive staff without being overly so.

Casual booking. Immediately acknowledged allergy note. Greeted promptly. Cosy atmosphere busy and friendly. Staff are attentive and considerate
Food seems to be prepared fresh and as requested delicious and presentation is spot on. Good selection of wine/drinks. Moderately expensive but worth it. We will be back which says a lot with so many eateries to choose from in Dunedin.

We enjoyed a very sophisticated cuisine in a stylish environment. The menu is far beyond mainstream and comprises very elaborated vegetarian options including beautifully arranged vegetables. The cider was heavenly, the staff very attentive and welcoming.

A brilliant dining experience. Service and food were both first class. Our group of four thoroughly enjoyed it all. The restaurant was also extremely generous in allowing us to use a voucher that was slightly out of date. A memorable dining experience that is highly recommended to others who want the finesse and excellence on offer. We will be back.

Parking for dining at No 7 can be a little challenging, but don’t let that put you off. The food is excellent, with a good number of options and catering of dietary requirements. The staff are very friendly, helpful with food and wine selection and discrete enough to let you enjoy your evening. There is good heating, so don’t wear your thermals! Overall, excellent value for money.
