Stopped by for lunch and breakfast on days when it was cold and wet. The staff were friendly and suggested we go upstairs where it would be quieter and warmer. Used by locals and seems v.popular. The food was tasty, well presented, quickly delivered and hot. Nice atmosphere and busy, which says a lot about a small local establishment. Enjoyed the food and the prices were reasonable. Would recommend it.

10 of us had brunch for my Mother's 93rd birthday and we had a wonderful time. The food was excellent and the service really good. Highly recommend this lovely cafe

We popped in for breakfast and coffee when staying at a nearby motel and really enjoyed our avocado toast and poached egg dish. The accompanying flat whites were great and we thought the meal was value for money and service great. We'd certainly return...

We called into Oaken on Sunday morning. We were not greeted as we walked in there by two girls even with me saying Good morning. We asked the woman behind the counter where the breakfast menu was, she pointed and said nothing. We looked at each other and were shocked by the response and walked out.

We stayed at the motel next door, so this cafe was a convenient stop for us. We had lunch here on our first day in Dunedin and liked it so much we returned again the next two days for takeaway sandwiches, bakery, etc. Their soup and sandwich specials were delicious, as were their desserts. The staff was very friendly, even waving when they saw us in the motel parking lot! We loved the food and the personal touch.

Yes -we know you were extra busy today-but the woman on the counter taking orders could have been more pleasant & courteous. We found her very ‘snippy’ -not a good look for out of town visitors. Be grateful that you were busy in these times. Our cabinet food arrived after we had finished our coffees and they weren’t heated. Not sure if we will return after this experience.

Just awful. Tried to order and couldn’t even hear ourselves think as the music was so loud. Told the lady out order which was a reg hot choc and a reg single shot latte, was then told they had no syrups. When we collected our coffee I got a cappuccino instead of a latte??? It was burnt as well and just disgusting. Possibly the worst experience I have ever been to in a cafe in my entire life.

My mum and I chose to go to Oaken as it was close to where we stayed and was on the way out of Dunedin towards Oamaru. We shared a big breakfast, it was delicious and the coffee was good too. Friendly service. Thank you.

Nice service with a smile. Generous portions, and tasty food. Great value for money.
Lovely open eating area with nice views whether it’s sunny or cold outside.

Came to Oaken to do some study and get a coffee with friends, however, there was no wifi. Would expect to have Wifi in a cafe in a student heavy town. Staff were also quite rude. Coffee tasted very watery.

My first visit to Oaken. Service is downstairs but most seating is upstairs. The staff were friendly, coffee excellent and food was delicious.

My wife and I went to the restaurant for lunch on Thursday. The upper tables were all occupied, but the ones by the entrance were free. We were very well received, and comfortably accommodated by the door.
We ordered two dishes, “Roast Beef Sandwich with horseradish, mayo, pickled red cabbage, chips & gravy” and “Spicy braised Chinese-style pork in flat bread” - see photos. And to drink we asked for sparkling water and coffee.
The steak sandwich was good, the meat was very tender. The chips were excellent. But the highlight was the second dish: the pork was wonderful - with that "real" taste of Chinese food that is only found in Szechuan, fantastic. The bread (home made) was divine. If the dish had come with the same chips as the aforementioned one, it would have been paradise! Congratulations to chef Sophie!
The coffee was also excellent and well presented - congratulations to the barista, Chloe, too!
In short, a more than satisfactory experience, which deserves to be repeated more often. I strongly recommend!

The food and drink was excellent, but it has to be said they were very busy which, in turn, made the food a bit slow to come out. However when it did come it was really good and I would return.
