About
Think back to a time when prohibition ruled over America. Dark times for some. For others, a time of opportunity and prosperity. One who seized the moment was Mr Hugo A Chile. Hugo was born 27 June, 1905. He was only 15 when the prohibition came into effect, about the time he was taking over his fathers mini-home distillery. Originally learning his craft to support the now fatherless family, Hugo created unthinkable profits by running rum to LA. Back then this journey would take 9 weeks each way, but after the third journey he was able to buy a lorry. After the fifth run he had his distribution network established. He never looked back. When you enter Casa Publica, you’re entering Hugo’s world.

Tripadvisor’s approach to reviews
Before posting, each Tripadvisor review goes through an automated tracking system, which collects information, answering the following questions: how, what, where and when. If the system detects something that potentially contradicts our community guidelines, the review is not published.
When the system detects a problem, a review may be automatically rejected, sent to the reviewer for validation, or manually reviewed by our team of content specialists, who work 24/7 to maintain the quality of the reviews on our site.
Our team checks each review posted on the site disputed by our community as not meeting our community guidelines.

Wonderful experience. Restaurant has an outdoor/indoor feeling as the front of the restaurant can be opened up to let in fresh air and allow for outside seating. We sat inside but close enough to enjoy the outside air. No Happy Hour. Arrived at 4 and...staff was limited but the server was doing his best to care for everyone. The best frozen margaritas hubby and I have ever had. Also had the pineapple salsa which was very good. I had 2 chicken tacos and hubby had 3. They were filling but could have had a little more zip to them. That is the only reason I did not give an Excellent rating. They do charge a minimal surcharge for using a credit card but no big deal. Happens a lot in the US. We enjoyed our dinner. So glad we dined. Highly recommend.More

The food was delicious and the staff did a great job of explaining what each dish was. When we booked we were reminded that we had to free the table up after two hours, which was fine as we had a show to go to....We checked the option on the booking to state that we were going to a show afterwards. We arrived on time for our booking, but were left waiting for half an hour or so before our order was taken. We chose to Trust the Chef, and were delivered three wonderful courses, but with ten minutes remaining in our booking we hadn't received our desserts, and we had to leave to get to our show. Had the service started earlier to our booking starting, we would have had plenty of time to finish all the courses. Our bill was discounted, but it was a shame to have missed out on dessert.More

Order the lamb. Fabulous. The ceviche was under seasoned and the salsa was with flour tortilla chips, not corn. But the wine and the lamb loin atoned for this.

Great Mexican food, with friendly attentive staff (we visited twice and were remembered the second time, even though there were a few days between each visit). The chicken fajitas were delicious and the salsa raja with chips was a great start to a meal: not...too spicy, but with more than enough flavour.More

We recently visited for my sister's hen do. We had booked a large table upstairs with the balcony and were all looking forward to a lovely meal at her favourite restaurant. Unfortunately due to the fact my sister was wearing a veil, the bride to...be was advised alcohol would not be served to her. This left her very upset and embarrassed and ruined what was supposed to be a lovely evening. Would have completely understood if she had been making a spectacle of herself, this was the start of her evening and we hadn't even been served drinks! The staff were not particularly concerned that the bride to be was upset, we advised we were to leave for this reason and they happily let a large group of 18 who would have spent alot of money walk out! Very disappointing as had been previously and had always enjoyed, probably wouldn't return due to the poor service.More

Great ambience, excellent food. We went for the chefs choice, which is four courses and you don’t know what you are getting. The guacamole made at the table was the first course and was very tasty, then 2 small plates - some tacos - these...were excellent, the main was a hanging chicken stack with veg, potatoes and couscous which was all very tasty and filling! Dessert was banana chimichanga and small donuts - sublime. Service was fab tooMore

The building and location nice. The cocktails were crap. Tasted 3. They had alcohol in them but not great tastes or mixing. One was mainly and ice cube. I booked through my app and I forgot to get points when I paid but wasn't asked...if I have the app. The man at the register was distracted looking over our shoulders so he charged us the wrong things so wasn't the best. Food was good and quick. Also the fold up menu was dum and stupid to have a candle under a big unfolding paper menuMore
