Rangoon Ruby consistently makes dining in their restaurant very pleasable. The restaurant is sophisticated in a delightful way. It is intimate and quiet but feels very much alive. The food is outstanding. The flavours, textures and presentation are superb. The prices are very reasonable including the mark up on wine. Burmese food is not as well known as it deserves. We are so lucky to have a restaurant of this calibre in Christchurch. To me, for a casual restaurant, it is Christchurch's best and compares favourably with many of the great restaurants I have eaten at in many other parts of the world.

Nice atmosphere. Plenty of space. Comfortable. Lovely decor. Service was slick and attentive. The food is flavourful, fresh and different. Our first time at a Burmese restaurant. All the plates are entree (starter) sized and the recommendation on the menu is to buy two plates per person. Good advice. However, the plates a priced in between entree and mains at most other restaurants which makes it expensive. There was a good crowd in on a Wednesday evening to they are doing a lot right.

Went for dinner on my own while in Chch for work. Ordered the papaya salad and the chili fish. The salad was delicious, lots of flavours. The fish was well cooked, not spicy at all. The portions are relatively small, and all dishes are pretty pricey. Service was great, attentive without hovering. Recommend.

I used to enjoy the bhodi tree, the former restaurant of rangoon ruby, so reallly wanted to give rangoon ruby a try. Portion sizes were always on the smaller side at BT, but far too small here and the food wasn't as nice as before. The papaya salad was nice, the tea salad had great textures but was sadly quite bland. Not how I remembered it. Had hoped to be able to leave a great review for the place as the people are lovely. Hope the serving sizes become more generous and flavourful

After 15 days Traveling NZ, Rangoon Ruby was a very nice and tasty restaurant in ChristChurch. Food was delicious with the help of our waiter. Recommendations were excellent. I really recommend you to visit this restaurant.

This was our first time trying Burmese food, but it was a bit of a disappointment. The Tea Salad (Pet Thoke) was excellent - an unusual combination of tastes, but everything else we had was rather bland - as if it had been toned down for western tastes. Such a shame as the service was excellent, the staff warm & friendly and the ambience perfect.

We have been coming here for years and to be honest we don't dine at many CHCH restaurants as we live out of CHCH. Parking is easy and as far as we are concerned the service and the food is as good and consistent as it has ever been. We actually forgot to book and ended up doing so about an hour and a half prior to going. Just as well we did that as the place was busy on a Monday night. Hardly an empty table and just as a table left it would fill up again. There were two front of house staff and they kept up the great service despite it being super busy, both very friendly and efficient ladies that had their work cut out for them. We were seated straight away and food and drink orders were taken in a nice amount of time. It was a special night and we ate too much but found it hard to leave some dishes we love off. We had a marinated fish each which just melts in your mouth, (usually we would share one), crumbly fish which was quite a generous size and nice fresh lettuce to wrap it in along with some herbs. We got a serve of fresh chilies on the side as we are big chili eaters, these chilies are not that hot. We got the beef curry and a rice and that was super tender and just cut through it with the side of our fork. The tea salad which we had not had for the past 3 or 4 times we have been, again a reasonable size. Bear in mind these dishes are not supposed to be massive dishes but more like small sharing plates so you try more items. Gosh we did get a lot as we also got the papaya salad which is delish, keep in mind this is not a Thai restaurant so it is not like the spicier Thai version. And lastly we got the marinated squid that was tender and nice sized pieces (forgot to take a photo). I would say we ate a lot more that other diners but we wanted to go all out. Usually I would say we would cut at least two dishes out. We had ample wine and beer and the cost was about $200. Nice shiraz also!

This restaurant is a rare gem and is located in central Christchurch New Zealand. After pending years in the suburbs as one of the cities best kept secrets it is now in one of the well positioned dining precincts in the Garden City. The food is superb with the best and freshest ingredients. It is light and has unique flavours that will have a broad appeal. The Burmese chef and his NZ wife own the restaurant and have a great team of front and back of house staff. The service is of a high standard. The portions are small and we shared around 12 dishes between the five of us. Impossible to pick a favourite and great value for money. Aftershock years of living and working in the region I can’t recommend this place highly enough.

I love going to Rangoon Ruby. If I have friends from out of town this is always the first place I suggest. We know the menu backwards and we always have the tea salad, papaya salad, marinated fish, and marinated lamb. We finish with the best creme brulee in town.

We’ve had a Burmese curry in Cambodia years ago and became a fan of Burmese curries since then so we were interested to check out this little place. We were so impressed, every mouthful transported us back to Cambodia and our travels. We ordered 3 main dishes, had wine and a wonderful ice cream desert with tamarind which was divine. It was a a lovely dining experience and the staff and food was exceptional. We’ll definitely be back!

Booked because it was Friday and they warned us they were down some staff. It sure didn't seem like it because the service was quick and efficient. The menu looked so inviting and I was really looking forward to the meal. We ordered the papaya salad, blue pea salad, fish with chili, coriander and tamarind, seafood skewers and the mushroom salad. Sadly, a lot of it was quite bland. There was no hint of tamarind with the fish and little to no chili that I could taste. The mushroom salad was very ordinary and also very bland - I did expect something other than button mushrooms. The papaya salad was ok; quite different to Thai ones I had previously, more of a sesame, savoury taste as opposed to the sweet and sour of the lime/chili/fish sauce Thai version. The best dish was the blue pea salad, which was green. Not that it mattered, it was a tasty little find with a nice variety of textures from the chickpeas. Sadly, I wouldn't go back.

We’d been big fans of Bodhi Tree back in the day but only recently been told of this reincarnation. We booked for a Tuesday night and it was packed - always a good sign. Unfortunately though, we were seated next to a really loud end of year work group and could hardly hear ourselves chat. The lovely waitress moved us as far away as she could as soon as she could though. This was greatly appreciated! After a wine and an Asahi we started with the famous tea leaf salad and some delicious raw fish. Both were superb - light, fresh, and full of flavour. We then shared the egg plant, prawns, and lamb curry. Every dish was incredible. We savoured every bite and then headed off to have a gelato in town before heading to a movie. We will definitely return soon with a group,of friends. We promise to keep the noise down though! Thanks for a wonderful dining experience.

Thanks so much for making room at the last minute for five old friends to meet up in your lovely restaurant. None of us had eaten Burmese food before, but we all loved every single dish that was placed in front of us. The flavours and textures were so delicious. We’d looked on here to see what people loved and all the dishes mentioned by people were so good. The sauces with the chicken and the lamb were wonderfully hot and spicy. All in all a fun evening with laughter and reminiscence, topped off by the fab food. Terrific service too.

On Holiday for a week in Christchurch we ended up going to the Rangoon Ruby 3 nights in a row. The food is delicious, that is the flavors are subtle a little spicy (India spice?), sour, salty, sweet, savoury all in perfect balance. Great service. Highly recommended. M&J Edwards

We truly enjoyed this Burmese restaurant. We shared Le Pet Thoke and Tohu Thoke for starters. Both excellent tasting. My wife had Seit da kin (marinated lamb) and I had Mga Hin - Grouper braised in spices. Both excellent. Service was great.
