We have previously dined on the Melbourne tramcar restaurant which was a fantastic experience - food, service and value for money. Naively we thought Christchurch would be similar. For what was on offer $270 per couple was a ripoff, plus wine. The food service was...fine but the whole experience was bland and underwhelming. No introduction or short commentary at all. I’m sure people would have appreciated knowing in advance that there was a toilet stop part the way through the trip. In our opinion, better to use your money at one of Christchurch’s high end restaurants. We won’t be recommending this experience to any of our friends.More

Overpriced and underwhelming. Such a huge disappointment. We paid $110 per person for a very average meal. The lamb was undercooked and inedible. We left hungry and had to eat when we got back to our hotel. Would not recommend!!

We took the 5pm dinner trip. Overall the dinner mains were good. I had the salmon and the rest of the family had the lamb. The hors d’oeuvres and desserts were okay. We had 4 people sit in a booth and it was pretty tight....If you are a wider person, I would be mindful of this as all the booths are narrow. Also it was a sunny day, and unfortunately the window curtains couldn’t come down so it got fairly hot. The staff tried to turn up the air con but it was still pretty toasty. I also thought the dinner would include an audio description tour of the city, since we were taking a train around the town. Unfortunately it did not. We went around town about 4x, with different routes. Overall it was an interesting experience but I likely wouldn’t it again.More

Love the concept, but execution by staff was STALE - No personality, no interest at all in who the customers were, no conversation, NOTHING - Just STALE. Very dissappointing, as overall experience was good. Our table was last served, last talked with, pretty much ignored...most of the night.....But again, if staff had ANY PERSONALITY or PERSONAL CARE for the Customer, then I would rate higher. Food was good, portions good....except for Cheese platter was a joke. 5 crackers and crumbs of cheese..... TRAIN your STAFF to CARE about the CUSTOMER.....Figure that out, it would be a much better experience for EVERYONE.More

I would recommend for a touristy experience of Christchurch and for the opportunity to eat in an old tramcar. Other than that, food portions are very small and not that tasty. You essentially ride around on the tram in circles and there is no information...provided about the city itself. For $135 per person, it is overpriced for what it is. On a positive note, our server, Hannah, was lovely and attentive to us. They went above and beyond for the dining experience. Overall, I wouldn’t recommend it unless you want to say you ate in a tramcar.More

What a fun thing to do. Just love this concept of eating in an old tramcar. The car was built in 1926 but refurbished recently and in impeccable condition. Seating is a little tight (there were 4 of us) but serviceable. The lamb rump and...salmon were really well done. Tom, the engineer gave great narration at the start and then was quiet during the meal. Can’t believe the quality of food that came out of the tiny kitchen. The wait staff, Joy and Melissa were friendly and efficient. A great time was had by all.More

The tramway restaurant isn’t an inexpensive option but is nevertheless worth every penny. Unlike many such tours where the venue excels but food disappoints or vice versa, this one delivers on both counts. The tram is a turn of last century original in mahogany and...brass and is both charming and comfortable. The 3 course dinner plus amuse-bouche prepared on board was of a standard many restaurants would aspire to while service from Brian and Shay was complemented by a friendly commentary from driver Michael. If you do one thing in Christchurch don’t miss this.More
