Couldn't be better. Warm welcome from Shriya, amazing cocktails from TJ including the best martini I've ever had, and the service and wine tips at dinner from Shareena was excellent. Food was outstanding - partner said scallops were best he'd ever had, cured salmon was...stunning, and the lamb was full of flavour and melted in the mouth. No complaints about the steak either, apparently. Couldn't be happier, will be back again soonMore

The early dinner package had weird rules. They advertised it from 5:30 to 6:30 pm but when we got there at 5:45 pm we were told that we would have had to order the early package by 5:30 pm to get it. So we ordered...off the regular menu and the food was excellentMore

Outstanding food, wine, atmosphere, and service. Our evening here was one of our best meals on the South Island. Nice selection of wines, too.

I am not usually a fan of in-hotel restaurants but 50 Bistro makes me rethink that idea. The food and service were excellent. While not an extensive menu there were enough options to satisfy our foursome. And there is something nice about just being able...to walk down from your room in the George to a fine-dining establishment.More

What a classy Atmosphere the 50 Bistro has with such lovely surroundings , the excellent wait staff and very good food. Itwas so nice to be greeted warmly by the Staff on arrival, seated immediately and given a great spot by the window looking out...over to Hagley Park. Our waitress was young and had only been working at the George for two weeks but you would never had know as she was so proffessional . An entree each and a main each was ordered and our attention was turned to the wine. Ordering wine was an easy task with the Nautilus Brut sparking wine available at $15.50 a glass. Both our mains arrived promptly and were very good. Today was a celebration of our 55th. Wedding Anniverary and we soon found that we had made a perfect choice with 50 Bistro noise levels just as you would want , and to be able to enjoy a good conversation over our meal. Parking was not an issue with plenty of parks available directly outside. For a special occassion, the 50 Bistro was a great choice and we will look for another special occasion to go back there.More

Part of the George hotel, Bistro 50 is a fine restaurant with a great menu, pleasant ambience and part of fine dining in Christchurch. The food is good, well presented and plentiful…almost too much. I have to confess I have eaten better, more subtle, more...tasty…-mine lacked a little pizazz , a nice mix of spice and similar to remove some of the slight blandness I experienced…but this is personal opinion. Service is good, if a little inattentive at forgetting for example to refill my water glass part way through…..it’s only a little thing…but…this place sells on its service and food quality,,,,More

I got Covid and could not attend a family get-together so this was to be my treat. We walked into the dining room and were seated at a brown wooden table set for lunch with the hotel white china. I expected to be seated at...a table set for three complete with pretty china and tablecloth, but no tablecloth. A plate of scones was brought followed by a three-tiered plate of very nice cakes and savouries. We were asked if we would like more tea so we tried different flavours and lo and behold out came the pretty cups. Absolutely no atmosphere or attempt to make it special. I emailed the manager and was told he would get back to me but I have not had the courtesy of a reply. Wont be back.More

My wife and I went to celebrate Christmas eve and ordered Pernod as an aperitif, was on the drinks menu but they had none. Ordered a particular Sauvignon blanc from the menu, not available. Ordered Grappa from the menu for a digestif, not available. If...you don't have it, take it off the drinks list. As for the food, I was served a steak that had clearly been cooked sous vide. If I had of known it would be cooked this way I wouldn't of ordered it as you lose the caramelized char grilled flavour. Steak was very bland and under seasoned. My wife had the Morrocan spiced lamb rump and couldn't detect any spices, she lived in North Africa for 5 years and knows her differrent cuisines. The lamb was overcooked and dry. She was offered a replacement but declined. The young staff were very friendly and helpful and were the only redeeming feature for this disappointing night.More

I visited the George on a Saturday evening for Dinner with my Wife. In short words the food was very good compared to other restaurants in New Zealnd. I would say the price to quality ratio was a 9/10 as the taste, quality and presentation...of all the dishes exceeded the standards you'd expect from a similar priced meal. However the staff member in a jacket who I beleive was the front staff manager that evening was very unprofessional. She was panicing around the restaurant, talking to her staff in a loud manner even though only one table was occupid at the time. (only 2 guests) I told her the name for the booking twice but she uttered 3 other names and asked if that was me without listening to me. Finally she escorted me to the table and asked me what type of water I want and never returned to the table. Later on the other front staff members, attended to us and looked after us very well. I believe The George should pay more attention to its front staff managers even though they are blessed with a talented set of chefs and waiters.More

We went for High Tea and the food was delicious. The scones were light and fluffy. The savoury options were tasty, and the sweet selection was lovely. The lemon Tart was absolutely delicious, and the Opera cake was divine. The only downside was the sub...optimal service. A lesson in attentiveness would go a long way.More

I had my mother in town visiting and was looking for somewhere special to take her for High Tea. I booked in advance as had been before with friends and had a wonderful experience many times before. None of the service staff have had any...training at all. The table was dirty. We were told on being seated that "we would get two hot drinks, a scone and then the High Tea". We asked to order sparkling water. It arrived and the waitress asked if we were OK for her to pour the sparkling water into a glass of half poured tap water. No thank you. Yes we would like a fresh glass. The High Tea food arrived and the food had clearly been left out for hours, or was from the day before as the sandwiches were stale and hard. We couldn't even attempt to eat it. The food looked like it was from the day before, store bought and horrible. For $47 a head it is just not up to standard. We complained to the waitress that the food looked stale and old. The sandwiches were hard. We advised that it would be a good idea to show the manager what was coming out of the kitchen. Someone in charge needed to see it. She said she would get her superviser, who was equally untrained and vague (the supervisor was the one wanting to pour sparkling water into tap water). I asked to see the manger. The original waitress said that the manager would likely be busy and unavailable. The restaurant manager appeared wearing slippers on her feet and apologised but really didn't offer anything to help. She is clearly not empowered to make decisions on solving customer complaints. I suspect the complaint will end there and go nowhere. After complaining, abd being overheard, the four other tables dining chimed in openly that they too had had a lacklustre experience. They also voiced they would not be back. This restaurant would be a great candidate for a Kitchen Nightmares episode with Gordon Ramsay. After complaining, the staff were giggling and chatting amongst themselves as if nothing had happened. Such a shame as it was once a great pace to take visitors. I never have the time, or will, to write a negative review on anything but this experience was just so bad. Please don't waste your precious time taking visiting family members here. This is not the best that Christchurch has to offer. It is the worst.More
