Tripadvisor’s approach to reviews
Before posting, each Tripadvisor review goes through an automated tracking system, which collects information, answering the following questions: how, what, where and when. If the system detects something that potentially contradicts our community guidelines, the review is not published.
When the system detects a problem, a review may be automatically rejected, sent to the reviewer for validation, or manually reviewed by our team of content specialists, who work 24/7 to maintain the quality of the reviews on our site.
Our team checks each review posted on the site disputed by our community as not meeting our community guidelines.

Went on a date here. Nice ambience and good service. Portion-wise very small and horribly overpriced. Paid 30 bucks for 3 small pieces of beef fillet with no sides. All up we got an entree basket (2x small slivers chicken, 3x small portion beef, a...few sliced bits of sliced pickles), 2 mains, a beer each and a dessert, it came to 150 and we were still hungry. Tastewise pretty average as well, the beef was poorly seasoned. Wont be returning.More

On the first open day of the new year, Tomi was deservedly full with a queue lining up at dinner. In this understated suburban location, Tomi delivers excellent value for money and serves with calmness and courtesy (despite some pushy impatient patrons at other tables)....Every dish was outstanding but especially the agedashi tofu and crispy chicken. This is amongst the best Japanese restaurants we have visited in New Zealand.More

We were lucky to secure a booking on a busy Friday night. The atmosphere was cosy but not noisy. Our order was taken promptly and efficiently. We sampled 3 of the mains & 3 smaller dishes. All were beautifully presented and delicious.

We had our dinner with two boys, we are 10 mins early, that’s why my two boys were outside looking at the menu, suddenly one of the staff went straight into the restaurant saying: we are not open yet, not even looking at us, which...was not friendly and rude. During the dinner, the same guy with big earring took our order, I found it very awkward, he seems has no patient and again very rude, was a bit disappointed with his service, but the other girl was very friendly. During the dinner, the sushi we ordered came just the scallop was not, so I checked with him, he said it’s coming with no eye contact, no smiling, When one of our boys wet the table, the staffs didn’t attend and check it we need a towel or not. We love Japanese food, but this guy is really disappointing us for the dinner with his attitude and service, not being professional and we don’t feel comfortable dining there. As a customer we paid for the food and service, and we respect each other, every customer should deserve the same service, in regards to nationalities or colours especially when you are living in an multi cultural country. We are Chinese, from Auckland.More

Authentic Japanese cuisine in a friendly wee restaurant. A bit out of the way, a hidden gem in St Albans. The Sashimi was fresh and beautifully presented. As good as any Japanese food we have experienced in NZ.

We found this restaurant very average. There are some very good a Japanese restaurants in Christchurch, but this isn’t one of them. The sashimi was the best of the dishes we had, but the tempura prawns, and the teriyaki chicken were not up to standard....The chicken had obviously been reheated. One of the wait staff was very good, but the service was inconsistent.More

A welcoming ambiance, The restaurant was very warm on a cold Christchurch evening. The menu was extensive but we chose to share a range of starters all of which were excellent. The standouts were the Chicken Karage , the Agedashi tofu and prawn twists. Its...also BYO for wine as well.More

We are regular diners at Tomis. We love it here as we know the food is always fresh and tasty. I love my sashimi so I am quite fussy about the freshness. Never disappointed. My son recently had the Takoyaki (Octopus Balls) and he said...it’s the best he’s tasted in Christchurch.More

This was our first meal in New Zealand, so we are as yet unsure of what to expect in terms of the standard of food. If this restaurant was In Tokyo, I would rate the food as average, but as a neighbourhood restaurant in Christchurch...I think that it deserves a better rating. The tuna sashimi was very competent and tasty. The tempura prawns were good, but the pork Katsu, whilst tasty. Service is effective and friendlyMore

I had the chicken bento as takeaway, they were delicious and good value. The person who served me was really helpful and friendly. I had to eat in the restaurant because it was hosing down with hail and I couldn't walk back. He didn't mind...me having my takeaway in the shop, he served me with water as well. Really good service and I am really grateful.More

What a fantastic place. Great service and food. Really like Japanese food and it really hit the spot. Right from the soft mushroom omelet and a nice little white fish sushi and the pork everything was fabulous. If you haven't been here would highly recommend...it.More
