As a large family we have enjoyed Tony’s Teppanyaki over the years in both locations in Christchurch. We had not been for a while (more than a year or so) and called into the Ferrymead location. It was fairly quiet with only a few diners...and we were pleased to sit at the grill to watch the food being prepared and cooked - always a favourite. Despite being quiet it took a while to order the initial drinks and place our food order. Normally the chefs are quite cheerful and seem to enjoy displaying their skills on the grill. Just trying to get the chef for our food to say “Good evening” was a bit of an effort trying twice. The food was served and was its usual good standard. The waiting staff were deep in conversation behind the bar and one of the other dining parties of 4 got up to go to the bar to ask for a drink. The staff then seemed to realise they needed to pay attention to their customer. We finished our meal and I went to pay the bull. They had charged me on the bull for the 1 beer I had ordered but they forgot to bring. I asked for the beer to be removed. I also voiced my disappointment at the lack of service and disappointing experience. That seemed to fall on deaf ears. Sad to see this place fall down so much.More

I was here several times in past years (bit longer ago) and always went out happy. I was a bit surprised when I saw the poor ratings of other visitors but due to my good experience in the past I tried again now. I did...ordered the "all you can eat" menu, which still is a good deal. But the service quality was extremely poor. For example the lady who served me in-between does not even said a single word when she reached the table the first 2 times. Not even respond on my greetings. No explanation happened on the meal. When I was asked after the first round by the waiter what I would like to have again I asked for some Sushi. He explained to me that I can only have what was delivered the first round, where I saw only 2 small pieces of a Sushi roll. He offered to bring a bit more and when I got this, I was bit surprised, as I got 4 pieces of a Sushi roll, with COOCKED Salmon inside. Not what I was expecting in a Japanese restaurant. A small discussion, when I left the place, showed me that the waiter was not interested in my opinion, he just wanted to make the point that he is correct and it was always like this! If that is his view of customer relation, I'm fine with that and for sure will choose a different restaurant is future. To be fair, I must say the cook made a good job on the Teppanyaki grill. But that on it's own is not enough. Hope they improve again one dayMore

Went for dinner with group of 4. Restaurant was really cold and didn’t help that we were seated near door. Heater was put on near us but didn’t make much difference, I noticed others in place still wearing their jackets. Food was really tasty but...service was slow and not friendly, felt they focused more on the larger groups. Did not come back and see if we wanted extra drinks. After dinner they bought us menu for dessert then never came back to take our order so they missed out on extra money here. Will not go back to this restaurant, will try other Japanese in Chch because we do love this food.More

Had an enjoyable evening, we all had the All you can eat for $40. The food was cooked to perfection and very tasty. We asked for fried rice instead of the steamed rice which we were told there would be an extra charge for this....Agreed to pay the extra but was shocked when we payed the bill to find the extra charge to upgrade to Fried rice was $9 per person so the $40 all you can eat became $49, felt this was very steep. If we were told upfront it was an extra $9 per person for fried rice we would not have had it, felt this is an unreasonable amount to charge for a small bowl of rice, feel $5 maximum would be more reasonable to charge.More

Booked for 8 people and they were fine that 1 couldn't make it on the nite Large carpark to accommodate our vehicles Seated around the grill to watch them cook was fun We all did the $40 all u could eat and happily purchased a...couple of tasty $11 (500ml) beers to go with the free water Venue is licensed but no byo The waitress was very attentive and patient waiting for the last of our group to arrive She moved to each of us to explain the all u can eat menu consisted of a set menu first of a miso soup, an entree mixed platter, followed by a seafood main, followed by a chicken main, followed by a beef main with rice, after that we were to order anything else we wanted. No one could order more as we were very satisfied and rather full from the set menu The entree of miso soup, 2 sushi, 2 salmon, and 2 or 3 fried chicken nibbles - beautifully presented and each very tasty Each of us had our own 3 sauce dish (miso sauce, Soy sce and sweet chilli) The seafood entree has 2 salmon, mussels and fish yum, the chicken can with beef of tiny slices cooked cabbage, spring onion (I think) and carrot, the beef (cooked to our liking) was too sure for While the dishes seemed small, they packed a punch of variety, flavour and delighted or palates Very healthy and superbly rolled out in a very timely manner Overall a fantastic experience and satisfyingly filling meal I highly recommend giving this restaurant a shot In only disappointed I didn't have room in my belly to take further advantage of the all I could eat Btw - the melt in my mouth tender beef (medium rare) was my favouriteMore

Visited with four friends - one of whom had personally gone into the restaurant earlier to request a booth table as they had difficulty sitting on high seating after an operation. We were told we had to sit on high stools at the cooking area....We didn’t want to. Despite two diners willingly offering up their table for four the staff initially refused to allow us to sit there. After 10 minutes we were seated. The service was abysmal - slow, rude and indifferent. The food was tasty and plentiful but the evening was marred by the total indifference of the staff. I won’t return - ever.More

Stopped in here for dinner so we could introduce our daughter to the way the chefs cook (and entertain) when cooking on the teppan grill. First issue we had was trying to find a park. Drink orders were taken quickly. We were sat around the...teppan grill. One of the dining areas was not cleaned properly from the prior people - as there was still a little food in front of me. Made me concerned about the three dipping options (the food was beside and a little behind), so didn't use them. Daughter was given a kids menu which had colouring/games on it to keep her occupied. The food was fresh and tasty. We ordered the yakiniku teppan a la carte at $44 per person. Expected a little more entertainment after being to the Park Royal teppan yaki restaurant many many years ago and the Riccarton @Tony's a couple of years ago, but it was still good. The toilets were clean and I loved the recycled water set up. Yes, would come here again.More

Has been a while since i visited, but found the standard about the same. Service was a little slow at the Teppanyaki, particularly for drinks. I had the special 'All You Can Eat' and found it very satisfying. Found wines expensive.

This is a regular spot for us, last nights' visit is the first after lockdown. It wasn't busy and despite waitresses being available I had to go to the bar to order drinks after waiting 10-15 minutes. Food delivery was slower than normal and I...heard other patrons complaining about the time it took to get their food. My wife ordered all you can eat Teppanyaki and I the mixed meat. After a while the waiter returned to advise they had run out of lamb (this was 7pm) so I opted for beef instead. Venison was served which I swapped with my wife for her beef so no real harm done. I told the waiter but it didn't seem to register with him what the issue was. My wife was happy with her meal but I was pretty underwhelmed with mine at nearly the same price of her "all you can eat". Over all it wasn't the usual pleasant efficient experience we've come to expect.More
