Thought I'd take my 80 year old Mum out for a lunch treat. All we ordered was 1 x Brioche French Toast. After waiting 20 minutes I asked how much longer, then another 8 mins passed, still nothing. So asked for a refund and left....First and last time I'll ever stop in there. 28 mins plus for 1 meal is rediculous. The cafe wasn't overly busy. I was asked what went wrong the order, to which I replied I ordered it, nearly 30 mins later we're still waiting on 1 meal - that's what went wrong!More

Review of Raeward Fresh Café, 800 Harewood Road, Harewood, Christchurch. We had driven along Orchard Road through the industrial/service sector of Christchurch Airport parallel to State Highway 1 - the main north-south city by-pass - heading north. We were seeking the whereabouts of the car...hire depot to where we were due to return the car and, equally, the hotel that we had booked for our departure from Christchurch the following week. It was early Friday afternoon and lunch beckoned. At the roundabout we turned east on to Harewood Road and there, on the left, was the Raeward Fresh Café with a large convenient carpark out front. The car park, of course, was there primarily to service the supermarket next door. Meantime, the stream of traffic continued to thunder past on State Highway 1 barely slowing for the roundabout with Harewood Road. Traffic was backed up on Harewood Road waiting to cross. We headed into the Café/supermarket entrance and turned left into the café. The long counter is on the right with queue/walk through space in front of the glass cabinets on the one side. Opposite the counter was a line of small tables each with a pair of chairs along the glass wall looking out to the open-air seating outside the car park and to State Highway 1. It was cold, damp and noisy outside and not the place to take lunch that day (or any day come to that – when heavy traffic dominates.) The place was empty. Everyone was inside. There may have been seating for >100 people in the three dining rooms through passed the counter. The café was about half full. Check the menu high on the wall behind the counter – breakfast & lunch (both available until 14.30 h) and the range of finger foods, snacks, sandwiches, pastries, rolls, breads, etc. available beneath the counter. With our food chosen we headed for a table/two chairs at the end of the row in front of the window, and then returned to the short queue to order/pay for our lunch. Our choices were shared chicken/veggies roll and rice crispies scone with a couple of coffees on the side. The roll was delicious; the scone less so – our mistake, we should have taken more time with looking/choosing. It was too much like eating breakfast cereal without the milk; too sweet and too crunchy is not our preferred dolce. That said, the flat white and cappuccino coffees were exactly what we like – hot, fresh and tasty. We paid NZ$24 for the meal. On reflection we should perhaps have ordered a couple of soups of the day with wholegrain toast for NZ$27 (which with a couple of coffees would have taken the meal to NZ$39) … a more appropriate meal for a cold day. Next time then. It was while we were seated waiting for the meals to be delivered, that we were shifted from our seat by the window! There was a small ‘reserved’ note on the table that we’d not originally seen. The apologetic wait lady led us round to the distant dining rooms and suggested we chose to sit there. We did. Our food/drinks followed us over. Through the window we had this view of the traffic slowing for the roundabout on the corner. It was not a particularly restful place for lunch. Imagine being outside. First time in the café and, what we hadn’t realised was the extent of the supermarket next door – it was housed in this enormous cavern of a building. Not that we needed to shop, but this is where the toilets are located. There were two – one male and one female. Presumably you could, if you were unfortunate, find yourself at the end of a long queue. This time, however, the supermarket was just about empty. We were in and out of the toilets in minutes, and then back on Harewood Road and into the line of traffic waiting to join State Highway 1 a few minutes later. The friendly café had provided food/drinks and space for lunch; service had been prompt and efficient. Costs had been reasonable. Downsides? Apart from location - heavy traffic on the main road next door - nothing comes to mind. Peter Steele 30 November 2023More

Visited Cafe Raewood for morning tea lunch while waiting to pick up Airport passengers, Wasn’t told wee as it for coffee was 30’ and had to ask for update. When coffee and cake did finally arrivethe coffee was good although the coffee slice was too...sugery. The meals served are large. If returning would only have coffee and certainly ask how long it would beMore

We came here for breakfast with our two year old. They have a terrible kids menu with very limited and unhealthy options. We tried to make up a breakfast from the sides for our two year old (which cost more than the kids breakfast options)...but they wouldn’t allow us to make a meal up of sides (even though we were ordering two adult breakfasts and just asked for the sides on the side of our breakfasts). We then tried to order the baked beans from the adult menu for our son, but they wouldn’t allow us to swap a poached egg for a scrambled egg - despite me offering to pay for the extra eggs. Their solution was for us to just ask for no egg. It was bizarre! They were completely unwilling to compromise despite us willing to pay $20+ for a breakfast for a 2 year old!!! We ended up walking out and going to Cafe Columbus at Mitre 10 and it was a far superior experience! Great kids menu, happy to swap scrambled eggs for poached with no extra charge and our toddler loved the playground.More

Family Birthday breakfast celebration. Well not quite!! Menu printed paper, crumbled with food stains on them. Very limited options. Ordered Spanish omelette came out dry and crinkled, would have made a good frisbee. Grandson pancakes were in fact picklets no topping so rubbery even I...found them difficultly to cut. Other guest got Quinoa muesli said it tasted like gritty bird seed.More

We came in for lunch at 1215 and the cabinets were very nearly empty, no scones or muffins & sandwiches were limited. We ordered a chicken cheese toasty and for nearly $10 were expecting more than just this white bread sandwich heated up on a...plate (side salad maybe?). The hot drinks we ordered turned up 30mins after the sandwich and had to be gulped down as our lunch break was over. This would all have been more acceptable if they were understaffed/run off there feet but there were many empty seats.More

Well what do you say. One hour waiting for food, one main send back twice as it was cold, no follow up service. Complained but no response yet. Maybe didn't like our faces.

Nice and close to where we picked up a rental car. Had a nice meal before heading south. The place was busy, but the hot meal arrived in 10 minutes. A very nice meal too. Called in again 10 days later, and again great service...was provided. I'll certainly be going back there.More

I come here often with my toddler as they have a little outside playground which he loves. Food is ok but would be great if there were more vegetarian options, normally quite limited in cabinet food and menu options. Good coffee.
