Fantastic, family friendly experience. The food was incredible and reminded me of my Nonna's. I loved everything about the evening from the food to the interior design to the music. Thank you all

An absolutely wonderful restaurant, we have not had such an amazing dining experience for a very long time. This restaurant has a charm and elegance you cannot deny, from the minute you walk in the door. The food is divine, the service is excellent, and...the staff are amazing catering to your every dining need. We would not hesitate in recommending Giovannis to anyone wanting a memorable dining experience , if you are looking for a new favourite restaurant and meal, this is the place. Simon & SandyMore
My wife and I both had delicious meals, lasagna and steak. The mains were topped off by deserts of Chocolate Mousse and Affogato. Fairly quiet tonight, service was friendly.
The service was very friendly, we sat in a comfy booth. The food was so delicious and there were so many amazing flavours. I had the lasagna which was presented beautifully and the flavour was just incredible!
first off we were looked after so well by the lovely hanaka (apologies for the spelling) and the food was AMAZING! we loved the bruschetta and muscles and then pork belly, lamb shank and pasta was so divine. can’t wait to go back, can’t recommend...it enough!More
We received a warm welcome on arrival and were shown to a super comfy booth. Our entrées were fast, hot and delicious. Our mains of lamb shank, slow cooked pork belly and 3 different pizzas were amazing. Beautifully presented all at the same time (7...of us dining) and very tasty. Great variety of dishes, with particularly good vegetarian options. Friendly and efficient front of house staff made the experience a fun and enjoyable evening. We will be back.More
The pizza’s weren’t hot out of the oven. Salami on the pizza (and only 5 thin slices at that) weren’t even cooked. They were placed on after the pizza came out of the oven. Prawn main was tiny (tasted ok however but cost for the...portion size was terrible) looked like a small starter dish Service was also so so and had dropped knives and folks on the table and glasses Would NEVER go there again I’m sorry to say. Perhaps they were having a bad night but our table of six were all very disappointed as it was a special birthday dinner too :(More
We showed up for lunch and apart form not being full we were told we had to sit right in front of the door where we got blasted with cold all afternoon. Whilst not busy aparently every table was reserved only to be left sitting...idle. The service was schocking it took forever to get our oders done and another 45 minutes before our food actually arrived, by which time we were all hungry and aggitated, not to mention the children being extremely bored. Our meals didn't arrive at the same time either which was very dissapointing. No children's menu and very poor service. The food was pretty average and we waited so long to see waitress after our mains that we decided to pay at the bar and get the heck out. Really dissapointed.More
I'm sorry to say that we were so disappointed with this experience that I felt I have to write this review. I am of Italian descent and enjoy cooking the recipes that my Mama used to make and also enjoy gathering ideas from restaurants. Last...Friday evening, I took my wife to Giovanni's restaurant to try one of Christchurch's Italian restaurants. We had made a booking earlier in the week so walked in expecting to be asked for our booking, there was none of that. We were led to a dark corner of the restaurant and supplied with menu's which was impossible to read as it was so dark, we had to use the light of our mobile phones to read the menus. Considering this was supposed to be an Italian Restaurant there were only 2 Italian wines on the menu the which can be obtained from the local supermarket. We ordered our starters which were fine as it's pretty hard to destroy Polenta Chips, the Arancini were rather undersized and lacking any recognizable flavour. We ordered our mains and 10 minutes later the waitress appeared saying that one of the mains was not available. The same thing happened with the desserts when ordered. Surely the wait staff should know what is on the menu and what is not. The evening was early and the restaurant was not busy so no excuse for not knowing what was available on the menu. When we received our mains, I had the fettucini dish with the tuscan sauce. With added Chili ? My wife had the Lasagna Secondly my wife's dessert was supposed to be a mousse. A glass had been half filled with a bitter dark chocolate that would have taken a road drill to break out as it was that hard that a spoon couldn't even break through. Additionally, my wife's lasagna was extremely overcooked and very heavy on oregano, and no sign of a béchamel sauce. The lasagna was a flat heap in the middle of the plate with a mescaline salad thrown in. Lastly, when we were eating our mains, I tried on several occasions to attract the wait staffs attention so that I could order more drinks, we waited for almost 25 minutes as one of the staff spent most of her time talking with one of the other tables. The point is that the restaurant was not busy. Considering that due to Covid in the City, restaurants have been struggling and are plying for trade, I would have thought that they could have tried a little harder to attract and keep customers.. Fortunately there are many other Italian options in the city, we will likely not return and would not recommend this restaurant to any of our friends or family. The food was average to poor and well overpriced. The service needs a serious look at with the use of properly trained and managed staff. I am pleased that I tried this restaurant and can now say, Not Again as it is an insult to Italian Cuisine.More
Overall my wife and I had a good meal here, and we would certainly consider it again if looking for an italian meal. However, the dishes were both excellent and very average. The starter of home marinaded olives was very good and is definitely recommended....I chose the Prochetta which was absolutely fantastic and my wife definitely thinks it was the star dish. Unfortunately she chose the Ragu which was basically mince cooked with pasta. The pasta was good, but this dish is supposed to be cooked low and slow, let the flavours develop into a rich sauce that sticks to the pasta. Definitely a C- in this case. My wife then chose the Tiramisu which was good but more a creamy pudding in a glass than a layered dessert. And where was the booziness? My dessert was Choco Dilemma which was pleasant but nothing great. The restaurant is very interesting inside and the Indian waiter was superb, friendly, and very courteous. The other lady server (who I think was the manager) was dressed in short jeans, sneakers and camo T-shirt - not very professional.More
