Teppanyaki

I had dinner at Amaterrace Teppanyaki, a Japanese restaurant where they cook the food in front of you. The menu includes set combinations. I ordered the Amaterrace Trio. The chef cooked my lamb chops first. As you can see from my photo, he was on fire! Next came my venison. Finally my beef steak arrived. The chef took a sugar dispenser and wrote a message upside down on the serving top. Everything was delicious. It was so nice to have three different meats, each prepared slightly differently.

An ok experience

More like a 3.5 rating. Nothing outstanding, but nothing major to complain about either. The ambience is certainly catered more towards adults rather than kids/families (very dimly lit). The food was standard for a Teppanyaki experience, although we have had better. Service was ok. Price wise, definitely on the steep end. Probably consider an alternative restaurant if you’re intending on dining here during dinner with young family members.

Fabulous experience

Went here as a family for a birthday. We had a 1 & 2 year old also. It was the first Teppanyaki experience for most of the group and they really enjoyed it. Although it is quite expensive starting at around $50 per person and $29 for the kids menu, it’s something you would probably only do for a special occasion. The food was very tasty and excellent quality, and you definitely didn’t leave feeling hungry. The only negative was that it was quite hard to find. It is upstairs, but finding out how to get up there was quite tricky. It needs to be clearly marked from the main walkway.

Closer to Hokitika than Hokkaido...

If you don't mind 'Japanese' food that's closer to Hokitika than Hokkaido, with no trace of Japanese finesse, then Amaterrace is passable, just. If you're looking for authenticity, don't come here. The food is edible....and over-priced. The wait staff are not overly attentive, passing by often enough, but not stopping to pick up dirty plates on their way past. The Teppan Chef was competent, from what I could see, but did not possess much in the way of flair. Fine for a boozy night out. Good luck finding the place. No street level signage from the sidewalk and most businesses don't have street numbers on their doors. If you walk down the middle of Oxford St and keep looking up, you might have better luck.

Good food, bad service

Sat on the hot plate for our wedding anniversary, ordered food and a drink. It took over an hour to get a salad, when the chef finally arrived, the interaction was none existent. She didn't talk to anyone, ask how the food was, she was just wanting to be gone asap. We were there 2 hours by the time we finished eating as she rushed to make up time. After the first drink we were not offered to order any others. We sat for at least 20mins with a dirty plate, no mention of our desert included until we decided to stand up and leave as it had taken so long. We had to decline and go. When mentioned to the staff about the disappointment, they said sorry and thanks. Just overall disappointed to go out for a treat,spend that much money, for an experience and service which we did not get.

First rate Japanese food

Authentic Japanese food and good service. We sat at a table rather than around the Tepan which was probably a good thing as it was a really hot day. Very wide range of options with at least 4 to 6 set meals all at reasonable prices. Al la crate offerings very good, especially the tempura prawns which were huge, juicy and fresh tasting. Seafood salad delicious and generous portion. Great range of wines and beers. Service excellent.

Teppanyaki experience

Was such an amazing experience sitting at the grill watching this being done. We opted for the set menu titled Amaterrace Delight with the upgrade to Teppanyaki fried rice. Everything was light and delicious. Cannot recommend this place enough.

Disappointing

We have dined here several times before but felt rushed with food and staff generally. They were more interested in making sure we were gone well inside our 2 hr booking rather than ensuring it was a special night for us. Overall a bit disappointing.

Came here for lunch and just adored the sushi lunch set. The décor of the restaurant was both modern and traditional. It needs a bit of TLC though which surprised me since it is a fairly new restaurant. There were quite big stains and marks on the table and several rips in my seat. The service was mediocre. The greeting wasn’t very enthusiastic and or welcoming. I was the only one present in the restaurant and I had to wave down people to assist me. There were four people working the floor and no one came over to see if I was okay, if I was enjoying my meal or if I wanted something else. The menu offered a nice range of lunch options. I chose the Salmon and Avocado Rolls which was served with Miso Soup. The rolls were amazing. They were fresh, delicious, nicely presented and generous in portion. However the miso soup was cold, straight from the fridge. I had to wave down someone to question it. There wasn’t an apology but a new one was brought out minutes later that was so hot I had to wait 10mins to drink it. The sushi was great but the service wasn’t so I am not that eager to return promptly.

No quality control

Been here many times and sometimes a bit average service. Lunch Friday. Prawns tempura forgotten. Long delay. Sashimi was poor. Thick slices, thin slices and no consistency. Asked for tuna and salmon. Got two tuna’s and one salmon. Not what we asked for. Was very cold till heating was turned on. Mix up with the seafood supreme ended up with both of us getting same dish even though Sue had asked for a chicken lunch dish. Will look for other alternatives.

We had an absolutely lovely meal. The service was faultless - fast, friendly, efficient and the food was cooked to perfection and portion sizes were spot on. The atmosphere was welcoming. modern and well set out. We will definitely be back and would highly recommend a visit. Easy parking with the car park building close by. 10 out of 10.

A complete waste of time. Rang & booked last Mon. Two of us ordered a bunch of appetisers + sushi & tempura then....nothing whatsoever. Never had a single person return to our table to check up. Sat & drank water for an hour. Food from kitchen was coming to other tables extremely slowly. We never saw any sign of our meals so we gave up and left after an hour. The man who had taken our orders looked sheepish as we said it was taking ages and weren’t going to keep waiting. He said “I was too embarrassed to come back to your table.” As we were nearly at the door to leave another staff member meanwhile went off to check in with the kitchen staff but there was no explanation nor indication that they had even starting preparing any dishes. We’d decided to leave anyhow. I still have no clue what went so wrong. The lady said sorry and before we walked out she wrote out a voucher for next time. She told us to book next time (we did book this time too). I’ve never walked out of any restaurant without eating but I’m glad I did as the food was never going to arrive.

Beautiful presentation of food

We had high expectations but were told when booking that the teppanyaki tables were full. This meant that we missed the entertainment that goes with the teppanyaki. Initially our waitress was helpful, but she got our order wrong and when dishes arrived that one of our party couldn’t eat for dietary reasons & her mistake was pointed out she became very rude & ignored our requests for water and dumped the food on the table. The food was superb & the duty manager dealt with the error in the order.

Delicious sushi and charming service

Great Japanese restaurant with fresh and delicious food and style, lots of choices on menu. My favorite pick was ‘special roll with eel’ but everything was amazing. Really loved the plum wine for a drink.The restaurant was busy on Sunday night but service was excellent, out waitress Sunny handled her job very well and created a lovely atmosphere. The only thing that we would add for a perfection is for food to be served for a table at the same time because while I was waiting for my starter -my partner was finishing his already and the same was with the mains. Otherwise it was definitely a great dinner , highly recommended and looking forward to come back again .

Food ok, fast service but little wow factor

If you’re wanting a “get in, eat and get out quick” experience, then this is the place for you. Good wine list, so we ordered a bottle. It didn’t arrive until after we had already been served our appetiser and cooking on Teppanyaki grill had started. Little to no interaction from chefs with the table, other than the token flicking of egg into each patrons mouths. Food was ok. I’ve certainly had better Teppanyaki. Price probably a little steep given other factors. Felt we where rushed through as quickly as possible.
