It was busy for a Wednesday night, so quite noisy. The set menu offered great value and they accommodated our food requests without hesitation. Service was on point and the cocktails delicious and generous, as was the food. Will be happy to eat there again.

First time dining here and was surprised at how busy it was. Nice atmosphere and great smells from the kitchen. The menu is very small with small plates being starters, medium plates are basically your vegetable side dishes and then the large plate menu is the main dishes. Started with a warm Pork Terrene which was fantastic. Mains were hit and miss with the braised lamb shoulder full of flavor but the Fettucine was very poor and tasted floury and the sauce was bland.
Mains do not come with any vegetables so at $24 per side dish this was expensive and terrible value.
Our waitress was at time inattentive and would walk away in the middle of taking our order several times as she got distracted by other people coming in. Over all some of the food was outstanding and some disappointing.
Probably the most expensive mains in Christchurch especially when they don't come with any side orders.

It's the best restaurant in Christchurch hands down!. The menu has something for everyone, it changes frequently and always delights us with the chef's creative twists. The service is impeccable, the servers know the menus well and it's abundantly clear that they all are foodies and love what they do. Great wine list, excellent beer choices along with a deep cocktail menu. The room is lovely, it has such a welcoming vibe. We have been lucky enough to travel the world and eat at some fine restaurants. 5th Street is as good as anything we have been to and then some!.

After a 5 star experience at Rascal, we had high expectations for a top 5 CHC restaurant. We were bitterly disappointed. Young staff were standing around chatting. Average service. We tried four of the small plates - halloumi, beef tartare, fried chicken and fish. All were flavorless and completely underwhelming. Such a shame.
Wine list was the only redeeming feature.
They did give us a small discount after we provided feedback, telling us that wasn’t the usual feedback. Overall, would not recommend.

Quite disappointed as I’d heard good things. Service was slow to start with, waiting at least 15 minutes before the waiter came back to use and two groups before us were served first. The buffalo stracitella was yummy as was the fish however the steak and potatoes had way too much salt. The desserts were average as well and I’d put in the booking that we were celebrating a birthday and no one acknowledged that. Won’t be back, it wasn’t a great experience.

We arrived for our 7:30pm reservation, we knew ahead of time we are only allowed two hours at the table, fully entering knowing that we were on the clock but did not expect to get our first course before our wine. Actually as a table of four our first course was fully consumed bar one bite before we even had a sip of wine from the bottle ordered.
Perhaps the kitchen who have everything dialed and so much time for personal banter can have a look at the rest of the dining room - bar, service staff. This restaurant is mainly run from the experienced back of house but a serious lack of front of house is needed. To be a restaurant is to be one, back of house must talk to front of house.
So in summary after spending $80 on the first course we all wanted that with a sip of wine. Wine came after all of the first course was completed. We even told the front of house. Nothing was done to rectify this. Left paid and unhappy. What can we do but not want to go back.

My wife and I had marvelous dinner. The waitress suggested 2 small plates 2 half middle plates and one large plate. We had the lamb croquettes and flatbread as our small plates and they were superb. The cheese was creamy and tasty. We shared the heirloom tomatoes and it was the perfect middle dish. We shared the lamb shoulder for our large dish and could barely finish it - wonderful. The dark side of the moon Shiraz was very rich and the Starborough Sauvignon was crisp. Both worked well with the variety of dishes we had. We appreciated the complimentary sparkling and still water. The service was pleasant and well paced.

Paid over $500 for the meal. The food was very salty and when I complained ,I was told no one else complained about the food. They seemed to have one sauce. The portion sizes were small for the price and nothing worth raving about. The young chef was cocky and rude and I would never go there again. It would do well for the owners to remember that Christchurch is a small place and people talk. So if people are made to vacate their table before they finish it doesnt do well for the place! I have attempted to put tis review several times but it seems to be taken down!!!

Booked the set menu for a large family group. Have always rated this restaurant 5 stars but this time fell a little short. All of the food was well cooked and prepared but the small plate portions were measly for a group of nine. One small square of bread per person is very poor. Half of the pumpkin hummus remained uneaten as a result. We each had only a small mouthful each of Hapuka as well. Thankfully, the medium and large dish portions were a little better, but at $100 a head overall (including drinks), we’d expect better with the starters. Two pieces of bread each and double the hapuka would have made for a five star experience.

We picked 5th Street as our final meal after 5 weeks of travel across NZ, and what a perfect final spot it was.
The restaurant itself was wonderfully designed, lots of plants, dark paint and dim lighting create a wonderful atmosphere.
The drinks list was extensive, with some fun and tasty cocktails.
As per usual, we ordered way more than the number of dishes suggested by our server and we are very glad we did. The fried chicken was great and prompted a lot of discussion amongst the table, the steak was tender and packed with flavour, and the carrots were some of the best we had.
The service was great, we were never rushed and felt well looked after.
Would highly recommend to any and all… and might say it would be worth the flight from London!

We booked at 5th Street based on the reviews on every website. By far one of the best meals we've had in a long time. We sat at the Bar at the 'Chef's Table' and Samson graciously served us an amazing meal and experience. Starters, main, dessert and wine, all 5 stars! The kitchen and bar are well run and a highly skilled team churns out beautiful dishes to a large dining room. We will definitely come back next time we're in the area.

What a great meal and wonderful atmosphere. We were recommended by a local friend to take a birthday dinner at 5th Street on a recent trip to Christchurch from
Sydney and book the Chefs Table. Sampson the chef and part owner was so accommodating and attentive explaining the various dishes as well as running the dinner service. A very well oiled and slick staff who were so professional and friendly. Food was exceptional and I’d thoroughly recommend the experience of sitting at the Chefs Table. A great establishment and may you continue to thrive, you deserve it!

We were recommended this place by a chef we met on our travels through the South Island so when we settled to work in CHC we booked for our anniversary. Great, buzzy atmosphere and nice greeting. We ordered a cocktail but it was busy so hadn’t arrived by the time we ordered. We asked the waitress if we could have 15 minutes to drink our cocktail when it came. The cocktail arrived a few minutes later and so did the entrees. Shame as we hadn’t ordered wine to go with it yet! When the waitress returned we asked if we could have a short break before mains as everything had arrived so quickly. She replied, “That’s not the way we do things here” and cleared away making her irritation very clear. She then added that if we delayed the main course we would have to wait an hour. We felt as though we were being scalded! We’re really not slow eaters but this was service at 100mph. It totally spoiled the atmosphere and the lovely food. Would be better served as tapas if it’s going to come all at once.

Was really looking forward to this visit as this restaurant has amazing reviews. To be fair the food was good but nothing special which puts it above other places. I was disappointed with the level of service. The waitress was friendly and explained the menu. We ordered various things including the the rib eye. The waitress went to leave and as she hadn’t said anything about the way the beef was cooked I added that I liked meat not bloody and more towards the well done side. She made feel a bit stupid as she then pointed to the next table and said that’s just the colour of the sauce. The beef came and it was too rare for me to eat much of it. After our main courses she cleared our plates by piling everything in the middle of the table. It just seemed clumsy and amateurish. No one asked us after that if we wanted another drink, coffee or dessert so after waiting a bit we just went up to the desk where we paid and left. It wasn’t terrible but just not what we expected after all the rave reviews.

What a fabulous restaurant to catch up with friends! We had an amazing dinner for 4 on a Friday night - it was very busy but we did not feel rushed. Food is designed to share and all bit a couple of dishes were Gluten Free or could be made Gluten Free. Our servers were fun & knowledgeable and the food was delicious. Really we couldn't fault the whole experience - totally recommended and we will definitely return when we are next in Christchurch!
