Called for morning tea. Had a cup of tea and a scone - both good - tea was hot and the heated scone was light and tasty. View was excellent and it was worth the drive up despite the road works. Recommended

This is a cafe with an amazing view down onto the city of Christchurch. We walked up one of the nearby tracks to the cafe but there is also parking for those who want to drive. There is not a huge menu but the food was good and good service. If you are lucky you will get an outside table. Unfortunately coffee was only average, but hey view made up for it.

We stopped at Sign of the Kiwi after walking up on the Harry Ell track and enjoyed date scones and a smoothie that were both excellent. What makes their scones so yummy? Perhaps it's the fact that they soak their dates over night? Smoothies are delicious, too. Eric, the expat France owner, truly loves people and good food. It's clear that Eric is passionate about providing excellent service to his customers. His staff all seem happy and perhaps it's because his friendliness extends also to his staff who he treats with respect and appreciation. Honestly, the views of Christchurch below and the Southern Alps are matched by friendly service and yummy food.

We visited for afternoon tea and ordered iced coffees/chocolates which are advertised as coming with ice cream and cream. We received coffee and choc milk poured over ice. When we inquired why they weren’t as described we were told they had no ice cream at the bar And had run out of cream. We were offered an apology but manager didn’t offer to rectify the situation. We asked for the price to at least be altered and were offered 50c. This was despite the a normal coffee costing $3.50 less. On top of this we were told they were too busy to serve our drinks downstairs and we had to wait for a takeaway despite there being 4 staff and only 2 tables occupied. Wow! As local christchurch residents we won’t be revisiting or recommending this place.

Cafe is situated high up the main road so it has a "high" view of the horizon.
There are 2 sections - one selling ice- cream , the other selling coffee, snacks, etc.
It's just an ordinary cafe, good for coffee, snacks & toilet breaks.
Seems this place has some history.

Gorgeous building..such history. I ph first to book lunch..a very helpful response resulted in an inside table (on a cool morning) with a perfect view. Lovely, charming staff. Lunched on tasty lasagne and salad.. delish Orange and rum cakes to follow with beautifully made coffee. A must to go again.

Lovely view and setting but somewhat disappointed with the visit. Ordered drinks ( coffees ) and cakes and selected our table. Given wrong table number so had to keep watch out for waitress in case she went to wrong table. Cakes served straight away...and waited...waited for coffee-by which time cakes were nearly eaten. Coffee was nice but then all disjointed and we didn't stay long. Shame-potential is there but perhaps lack of effort knowing so many stop

We had a breakfast with friends from Canada, they really enjoyed their French toast with real maple syrup. My date scone was amazing and yummy. The service and the view are superbe. Place highly recommended. Merci beaucoup pour notre breakfast. Bonne continuation.

Today we as a family visited this amazing business. The owner is such a wonderful man who gives such great service along with his staff. We had won a voucher which he had sponsored at a sporting event and he served us so well.
The food was to die for and the environment and other staff were just perfect for a family outing at lunch. We thoroughly enjoyed ourselves and everyone's food and drinks were soooooo good. Highly recommend all of this gorgeous home made food. Could not fault this place and we will be back.
Thank you Sign of the Kiwi!

Lovely friendly staff in a wonderful location.
I visited with friends for brunch . They both had the Kiwi Stack . I ordered seafood chowder a particular favourite of mine. The Stacks were fine but the chowder was very disappointing. A small bowl of very tasty broth, with loads of finely chopped carrot. A regular trick when padding out seafood chowder. I honestly found only one piece of seafood, a small squid ring. Not impressive . At a cost of $18.00 very poor value.
Quite a ripoff

Thought we would take friends to this cafe for brunch. Counter service was rushed as there was a queue and panic set in. Wonderful, when you are taking guests there for the first time for a relaxing brunch.
Food was pretty average on this visit, which arrived 10 minutes after the coffee. Falafel wrap wasn't fresh.
What was rather unpleasant was the young waitress in the face mask. My friend commented on the food which was taken with a sneer. When she returned with more food, he said cheer up, which was met with a second more unpleasant sneer.
Again, not a wonderful impression from staff to our friends as we always take visitors up to the Sign of the Kiwi.

On a clear blue winter's day a great thing to do in Christchurch is to drive up Dyers Pass Road and beyond, stopping at this historic cafe for it's excellent coffee and reasonable counter food. Lots of tables outside and brilliant views of the snow-capped Southern Alps the day we visited. Brilliant.

What a great cafe in the perfect setting up in the hills, by great hiking trails and views, with wonderful food. We sat outside listening to the birds and enjoying are lovely repast that included wonderful dates scones with cream and jam. A scone and a pot of tea were just what we needed.

Not cheap but quality of food is high, especially for a random at the top of the hill cafe. Ordered the seafood chowder and the iced mocha, both were super. Loads of seafood in the chowder, and the garlic bread that came with it was some of the best I’ve had. The mocha was delicious too. Another plus is the cute outdoor seatings they have, overlooking Christchurch

Great cafe, with friendly and efficient staff. We ordered tea and it came in a nice teapot and was made with real leaf tea, rather than teabags. This is rare to find!
The food looked delicious, and the date scones in particular looked great.
The cafe can be busy, but the staff get though the orders well.
There is a moderate climb up to the cafe from the carpark.
