Tripadvisor’s approach to reviews
Before posting, each Tripadvisor review goes through an automated tracking system, which collects information, answering the following questions: how, what, where and when. If the system detects something that potentially contradicts our community guidelines, the review is not published.
When the system detects a problem, a review may be automatically rejected, sent to the reviewer for validation, or manually reviewed by our team of content specialists, who work 24/7 to maintain the quality of the reviews on our site.
Our team checks each review posted on the site disputed by our community as not meeting our community guidelines.

If you love date scones then this is the place to visit! I didn’t quite believe it ‘til I tried one myself. It’s the best date scone I’ve ever had! The Sign of the Kiwi is a popular little caf so parking can be scarce...but the view and food make it well worth the winding drive up.More

Lovely view and setting but somewhat disappointed with the visit. Ordered drinks ( coffees ) and cakes and selected our table. Given wrong table number so had to keep watch out for waitress in case she went to wrong table. Cakes served straight away...and waited...waited...for coffee-by which time cakes were nearly eaten. Coffee was nice but then all disjointed and we didn't stay long. Shame-potential is there but perhaps lack of effort knowing so many stopMore

This place doubtless doesn't need another review, but the location is stellar and the coffee is, too. Try the date scones -- delicious. Perfect pre-hike or as your post-hike reward; great views. Oh, if you want takeaway coffee, take your own mug; there are no..."to go" cups available. Good for them!More

Enjoyed a beautiful celebration at the Sign of the Kiwi. This was a private function held on a gorgeous evening, superb location, divine catering and incredible service. All celebrations should be this special. Thanks so much.

Lovely friendly staff in a wonderful location. I visited with friends for brunch . They both had the Kiwi Stack . I ordered seafood chowder a particular favourite of mine. The Stacks were fine but the chowder was very disappointing. A small bowl of very...tasty broth, with loads of finely chopped carrot. A regular trick when padding out seafood chowder. I honestly found only one piece of seafood, a small squid ring. Not impressive . At a cost of $18.00 very poor value. Quite a ripoffMore

Not cheap but quality of food is high, especially for a random at the top of the hill cafe. Ordered the seafood chowder and the iced mocha, both were super. Loads of seafood in the chowder, and the garlic bread that came with it was...some of the best I’ve had. The mocha was delicious too. Another plus is the cute outdoor seatings they have, overlooking ChristchurchMore

We visited for afternoon tea and ordered iced coffees/chocolates which are advertised as coming with ice cream and cream. We received coffee and choc milk poured over ice. When we inquired why they weren’t as described we were told they had no ice cream at...the bar And had run out of cream. We were offered an apology but manager didn’t offer to rectify the situation. We asked for the price to at least be altered and were offered 50c. This was despite the a normal coffee costing $3.50 less. On top of this we were told they were too busy to serve our drinks downstairs and we had to wait for a takeaway despite there being 4 staff and only 2 tables occupied. Wow! As local christchurch residents we won’t be revisiting or recommending this place.More

This is a cafe with an amazing view down onto the city of Christchurch. We walked up one of the nearby tracks to the cafe but there is also parking for those who want to drive. There is not a huge menu but the food...was good and good service. If you are lucky you will get an outside table. Unfortunately coffee was only average, but hey view made up for it.More

I first visited your establishment in June 2011. It is a much fond memory of my first trip to Christchurch. I hope no one was hurt in the June 2011 earthquake that happened on the day I was at the airport to catch a plane home to Brisbane. Well, that didn't happen. A day or two later, I was taken back to your establishment to find the devastation inflicted on your establishment. I cried. I am so glad you have reopened, your landmark and former reputation should keep on keeping on. I am disturbed about some of the reviews I have read. Bad coffee? Well, you can't please everyone. You also can't please everyone about the other patrons. I have to admit that when I have visited establishments such as yours, the hikers, campers, cyclists (especially when they don't remove their pedal boots) and trail walkers have been loud, obnoxious, demanding, rude and not caring of those around them. I hope you can find a remedy for these disturbances. You are a great place, with awesome food, and coffee, with friendly and caring staff. Keep going Sign of the Kiwi. If I ever make it back to Christchurch, I will visit for coffee and food. Good luck and best wishes.
