Zen sushi and dumplings has great meals and drinks. A handy spot doted in the city center with helpful staff and custom made sushi if you have allergies. With free range eggs and king salmon making this the best sushi shop in Christchurch.

Not really sure how this is the #1 for Christchurch but it was still good Japanese. This isn’t a restaurant it’s really a grab and go lunch spot for workers so most things are premade. The dumplings are the only thing made to order. The sushi, katsu chicken and dumplings were all delicious. The website says they do bento boxes however the girl serving didn’t even know what a bento box was which was concerning. But the chefs are clearly Japanese because the food was still delicious.

Zen Sushi and Dumplings has undergone a transformation. I think that during the COVID-19 Lockdown they took the time to refurbish their premises. Now they have seating indoors, which in the winter is very welcome. They even reserved a table for us. The shrimp tempura udon and ramen that they’ve added to their offerings are delicious and warm. It’s worth a visit.

Zen has been my go-to for sushi or dumpling lunch since it opened. Since ownership changed i've found that the quality isn't quite what it was. The last couple of times i've had the sushi it wasn't as fresh as i expected, nor was there the same level of choice of different sushi types. I expect Covid hasn't helped the situation, with less people going through than used to be and therefore slower turnover of food. Service is still very friendly and one of these days i'm going have to try one of their newer Bento or ramen offerings.

Hungry after the flight and hotel check, we still can’t recommend it.
Very average dumplings, udon and katsu.
Scalding green tea from a tea bag that was only brought out at the end of the meal.
Restaurant prices for frozen food isle quality at best.
End of 2020 this place is rated #1, maybe this was better deserved in the past.

Had lunch here with some vegetarian options like udon noodles and dumplings and salmon donburi. All food served in takeaway containers which seemed wasteful even with patrons eating in. The wasabi was awful sitting on the counter. Service is good with food average.

The most delicious sushi in christchurch . They use free range chicken, free range pork, free range eggs and deep-sea salmon. The sashimi is so fresh . Dumplings are freshly made and very yummy. The staff are all very nice, friendly and helpful. Highly recommend .

I don't get how this place is #1 in a city like christchurch. We stopped her for lunch. We got a 6 pack of sushi and 6 dumplings. The dumplings were decent. The sushi was average. We've had far better. (the tuna was cooked?!?!?). It wasn't a bad meal by any stretch, more of a snack. I give it a good rating, but don't see how the bulk of the patrons give it a 5. Limited seating meant we ate it on a curb behind the restaurant which didn't help.

From the freshly prepared crispy prawn sushi, to the salmon and tuna nigiri, right through to the gloriously juicy pork and chive potsticker dumplings, this was a wonderful lunch. Lovely chatty, engaging owner. "If you are going to do something, do it well." he said, they certainly do that.
Go there and enjoy.

Lovely people working there. But when your called sushi and dumplings I expected both to be above average. I’m sorry to say they were not. Very small amount of salmon and brown avocado in the sushi, the dumplings , I got 12 mixed … all the same … they were just not good. They felt shop bought unsure if they were. Below average.
I appreciate the location the rent may be high but this is because, I guess, there is more foot traffic but you just can’t serve sub standard food. I used first table so the food was half price and still I felt it was too much for the food I ate. And would not go back even at half price.
4 of us went, one ordered the salmon salad she enjoyed that. My friend said her veggie tempura was nice.
Im sorry but the reviews I read after booking are valid and I would not recommend either the sushi or the dumplings. Maybe other meals are better.
Lovely man serving that could not do enough but as an eating experience for even a light tea this fell very short for me.

This place was remarkable 2+ years ago. Incredible hand made fresh sushi, nigiri and dumplings. So goof that it got to the #1 spot on tripadviser. A sushi restaurant at #1???? Amazing.
In recent times though, maybe because of a change of ownership, the sushi has been average at best and terrible at worst.
The range is very small, the recent sushi I have had was dry and bland. There is no longer a pick and mix style of sushi where you can make a box of your own.
This place needs to be taken down a few levels on TripAdviser. I wouldn't even put it in the top 10 for sushi in Christchurch, let alone a top 10 overall.
Maybe it needs a few more realistic reviews to take it down from it's #2 spot.

Came on here to see that my assumptions were correct, they have new owners. And boy can you tell. Very poor quality dumplings. Got told 15mins was 31 thats fine. But food was really horrible abd we won't be returning for $51 for what we got. When you can make 10x better at home than what we got very disappointed. Such a pity. Also check I'm not sure I would leave your chopsticks out like you do one of ours was covered in mold. Even tho it was in a sealed packet.

Gas station sushi. They use tuna from a can in the sushi rolls. This place changed ownership back in 2021. It is not the same quality of fish in the photos that have been reviewed previously. Paid $60 for sushi that wasn't worth $10. Made me sick to my stomach. Couldn't even finish it. 🤢

Great sushi.
Arrived towards their closing hours and they had no salmon, however the guy at the counter was mind enough to whip some rolls up for me even though they were packing up. Great service and greT food. Will be back again.

Had lunch here. The dumplings were excellent, the service was friendly and helpful. The ramen was nothing to write home about but pretty good.
Like other reviews, I can't understand why this place is number 1 in Christchurch but that's not to say it's not good - I just wouldn't go out of my way to come here over other places.
Still, I would come back for the dumplings alone. :)
