We intended to come here the weekend before to get a platter prior to going to a buskers event in the city. However we decided not to as we thought we would need to be in the city early to get a park. Wrong thing to do! We went to Fat Eddies and ordered platters and sides...my review of the place will tell all.
So take two we ventured to Number 4 this weekend and have a fabulous time with lovely food and staff.
It was a busy Sunday afternoon with many tables reserved but the staff helped us find a table and we ordered drinks and the plank. The staff were all cheerful and efficient and the plank was simply divine. Presentation, quality, taste and variety was what we got. We stayed for more drinks for a few hours then went on our way. We totally enjoyed our visit. Two of us mentioned the addition of blue cheese would have been nice and also noticed they have a number of guests with dogs which the waitresses patted from time to time and then straight back into pouring pints. It didn't bother us but I imagine others I know would find this a bit slack. Will be back again.

I organised a couple of weeks before a table in front of TV to meet friends and enjoy an evening of nibbles and drinks to watch the North/ South game. Go The South! Through a misunderstanding there was a couple already sitting at the table. The staff attended to it straight away and sat us at the our original table and the couple were fantastic in swapping with us. The staff were fantastic given we were in Covid level 2 where we relied on their service to our table. They were attentive, friendly and catered to our every need as they always do. A friend was coming back the next day to celebrate Fathers Day and on tops of that the mighty South beat the North in the 83rd minute. A perfect complete evening!

It's ages since we last went to No. 4, and I must say this was a most satisfying lunchtime meal. There was plenty of variety in the menu, all of which sounded really tasty, but I settled on the Salmon on Hash, while my wife had the chicken and corn soup. Sensible-sized portions - not overwhelming, but enough to satisfy the lunchtime hunger-pangs! Service was efficient and friendly and the atmosphere had a real buzz to it.

Unfortunately the chef could not cook a steak. I would give this joint a miss. Observation Full of St Andrew’s parents tossing off. And that’s because they f St pins or their school team. Was in a party of 30 Ordered a medium steak. Everyone got a rarer that’s rare steak because the kitchen staff were bloody hopeless.

Food and service was okay but far too many tables taken up with non eaters just drinking with their designer dogs in tow. I love dogs but not in a place where people eat. Icing on the cake for me was when a waitress brought out a dog bowl of water and put it in the ground for a customers dog and then immediately served another customer with water without washing her hands. That did it for me unfortunately so won’t visit here again.

A regular venue for some time, and great choice for a Monday night birthday dinner. Monday is quiz night, and on booking we were offered a table in the restaurant, private enough but still able to enjoy the atmosphere of quiz night. And busy enough to not feel like a Monday. Food choice,and perfectly medium rare, was beef fillet, venison fillet and a coconut prawn risotto accompanied by Hawkes Bay Brookfields Back Block Shiraz, very smooth and great value. Polished off to end a perfect evening with a Cointreau affogato.

Not only is the food and atmosphere outstanding but we were welcomed and by the lovely Bella who took care to attend to our needs.
Bella was able to recommend some delicious dishes and gave us just the right amount of attention (it was "date-night") while still keeping an eye out when our glasses needed topping up. We will definitely be coming back again for date-night!

We were out in Merivale and needed a quick Lunch. Went for a couple of small meals. I had the Chicken sandwich & fries This didn’t sound like much but actually was full of flavour and tasted like a roast chicken dinner. My partner got three wonderful crostini breads with great flavours. Really enjoyed the meal & will be back

If you always wonder where to go to get the 'restaurant quality' food you see on tv show, go here. Officially more of a pub than a restaurant but there is a dedicated small dining area with lots of atmosphere, and no wonder it was full on a Wednesday night. Prices are standard but the food and service is a cut above. The staff were BRILLIANT. A few broken glasses over the bar, but who cares?

I've eaten at this restaurant several times. In the past I've had a salad which had caramelised walnut in it; and the another dish that was a flatbread with pear and caramelised onion both were delicious. Tonight I had the tandoori cauliflower (vegan) super impressed was very delishious. Most dishes on this menu contain meat but keep going back despite being vegan (strict vegetarian).

We booked a table for 7pm and it was a typically busy evening at No 4. We ordered the bruschetta to share and sipped our wine as we bided our time for the main course... we are informed (by the truly lovely and attentive staff) that there's a bit of a wait on for the mains. Fair enough, it was busy. So we're nearly down to the bottom of the bottle when the mains arrive. My friend had the pork belly which was crispy, well glazed and pretty much perfect (if it wasn't for the rather too spicy daal).
I had the best Beef Wellington the world has ever bore witness to. To say it was stunning is an understatement. Crumbly flaky pastry, tender and melt in the mouth steak, complimented with a tangy beetroot mash and pea cream. Exquisite.

We were given a great table and the service was wonderful but, unfortunately, the meal was not at all appealing. The "Hot roast chicken sandwich" was simply two thick slices of very ordinary bread filled with plenty of shredded chicken, some very uncrispy chicken skin and nothing else one could taste. The chips were very crispy and crunchy and the accompanying sauce was tasty. It was filling, though, so we did't try dessert.

We just popped into No. 4 Merivale fir a quiet drink and a light bit to eat. We have been there several times before for just drinks which is fine. Staff are pleasant and attentive but tonight the food was a real let down. My wife had the ceviche (incredibly salty, stale nachos and a tiny half teaspoon of avocado paste) and I had the dumplings (straight out of a packet, greasy, over spiced and instant indigestion). I don’t normally complain but when we came to leave the staff member did ask ‘ how was your meal’ to which we had to say the above. She tried to find the manager but to no avail.

We celebrated my dads birthday in the library! The staff at No.4 are very professional and Georgie is a wonderful waitress. I just wanted to thank everyone involved that helped us enjoy the night of my dad’s party! He absolutely loved it, we all did. The food is phenominal, shout out to the chef’s Ian & Ian and the kitchen staff that served a beautiful feast! Couldn’t have been happier with the outcome. Would definitley reccomend to anyone having functions! No.4 can cater to all needs.

We late booked for a group of fourteen to celebrate my wife’s birthday, which falls the day after our wedding anniversary. The No.4 Bar restaurant was not our first choice, but due to circumstances we decided to change it. We were not disappointed however, as the No.4 really came through.
It was an informal evening, and we all ordered drinks as required, with one or two bottles of bubbly for the table. My wife ordered a few platters of food plus fries and other accompaniments. The food was absolutely perfect and served well. We wouldn’t hesitate to do this again.
