We have enjoyed meals at Cookai on a few occasions and always enjoyed them, but last night they were very understaffed and the food on the sushi train was average. The dishes were not replaced often and when we tried to order from the menu...we were made to feel like we were an annoyance. I felt for the front of house staff. Sadly we wont be rushing back.More

The sushi train offers a wide variety of choices, but we arrived late in the afternoon, close to their closing time within an hour. Unfortunately the sashimi lacked freshness, and the deep-fried squid rings had a sour taste. However, the redeeming factor was the delicious...soft-shell crab rolls that compensated for the other shortcomings. Overall it was an okay experience.More

The food was OK, but the service was terrible. The weight people were busy on their smart phones, I did not pay much attention to patrons. Would not recommend, will not go back.

Have visited this restaurant a number of times now - the food is always a highlight. You can take items from the train or order from the menu. My only complaint is that some of the waitresses are a little slow (younger woman who stands...at the bar, but is out of line of sight) and do not observe when patrons need assistance. Maybe a light/buzzer on the table could help with service. Will keep returning, as good prices, quality food and seating.More

The restaurant is modern and very spacious. Good location right in the centre of the CBD. Sushi is average. The rice is a bit hard. And the sushi tends to stay on the conveyor belt a bit too long.

Unfortunately didn’t have the best experience. The food on the train was cold, and the food we did eat wasn’t the best. Read the other reviews which seem to point out that if you go when it’s busy it’s better. We went when it was...quiet. Still disappointing as same standards should apply not matter what. We were excited for Sushi Train as have had amazing ones in the past, but this one was a miss.More

A group of 8 of us tried to go to this restaurant yesterday and were told they only opened at 5pm by the owner. We were happy to wait so walked around and went back at 5pm, only to then be told they were booked...out. Why didn't they say that half an hour earlier instead of making us wait? This also made us miss the other restaurant we wanted to eat at, as they had closed by that time. Poor service. Would not recommend.More

Not really a Japanese restaurant but a restaurant opened by Chinese that cook Japanese Cuisine. Food is not authentically Japanese as they do it with Chinese cooking style (eg Instead of seaweed they also use Preserved Vegetables in the soup base; Fried Chicken has powder...seasoning which Japanese food don’t usually has that) Sushi and fried meat on the train are not fresh too - they go rounds and rounds the train and some are cold and stale. Service attitude of staff are not good too - understaff and appear to fluster; try to take my money that is on my hand first before even letting me know my bill amount. Wouldn’t recommend as it is not authentic Japanese food.More

They had a large variety of sushi compared to the average Japanese restaurant and the sushi train format allows you to try a number of different types. Unfortunately, most of the sushi I had was mediocre at best. There was nothing seriously wrong with any...of it, but the seafood sushi in particular didn't seem fresh and was practically flavorless. The only sushi type that really stood out was the seaweed and mushroom, which was quite nice. Cost-wise it was fairly standard - more than I would've liked given the quality, but certainly not unreasonable. Overall, it was mildly disappointing but not truly terrible or anything. Given how many excellent Japanese restaurants there are in Christchurch, however, I wouldn't recommend coming here unless you really want the sushi train experience.More

Some of the dishes on the Train were cold some people next to us said, as it was not very busy being a rainy night. We ordered from the table and all was hot and delicious, in particular the Shishime and Tempura prawns. Good service...and comfortable surroundings. Wine a little expensiveMore

Loved this place. I was only in Christchurch for a day, but this place is always open, is a running sushi place, delicious, good quality, good prices, fruit for dessert, free water and the staff was really nice! Can definitely recommend.

I'd guess that on a day and at a time when Cookai is full of people that the items on the sushi train are taken and other items replace it. At a time when you're the only people there, it wasn't the same experience that...I had the first time. Yes they have tuna and a lovely seared salmon, but I found a fairly large bone in my tuna nigiri. Many of the items looked like they had been on the rail for quite a while. It was pleasant, but I know they can do better. Perhaps they should give people more incentive to go there in groups so that items are consumed and fresh items put out. If you're hungry for sushi while in town, give it a go and see what you think. The beauty of a sushi train is you can eat as much or little as you want. Since we went for a birthday celebration, and had been there before, I was expecting a better and similar experience as I had last time.More

We though we would give this a go and quickly sat down, not many people there but in the sushi train setting that's probably a good thing. There were heaps of options on the train to choose from and the menus were not bad too....We went for garlic chicken wings and a chicken don dish off the menu. Both were pretty good to be honest and the chicken was cooked very well. Off the train I was quick to snap up some Pork and Prawn Dumplings (my new favourite) and some prawn cutlets. All food was excellent, unfortunately I had food envy after about 20 mins and should have gone outside my comfort zone and tried some tuna. The staff were friendly and overall it was a great experience.More
