Tripadvisor’s approach to reviews
Before posting, each Tripadvisor review goes through an automated tracking system, which collects information, answering the following questions: how, what, where and when. If the system detects something that potentially contradicts our community guidelines, the review is not published.
When the system detects a problem, a review may be automatically rejected, sent to the reviewer for validation, or manually reviewed by our team of content specialists, who work 24/7 to maintain the quality of the reviews on our site.
Our team checks each review posted on the site disputed by our community as not meeting our community guidelines.

Great restaurant, Wife and I had dinner on a Thursday night. Food was delicious, well priced and very special. Our Entree was Choriso and Garlic Prawns. Big juicy prawns delicious sauce but the chorizo was underwhelming, nice but not much flavour. My main was Linguine...all’Aragosta. Delicious very tomatoee seafood pasta. Could have more prawns though. Wife had the Tagliatelle Al Basilico Salsina. Delicious dish with mushrooms and walnuts. Hospitality was good. I got the bicycle thief labelled Pilsner - which was nothing special tasted like a speights summit with a crafty twang. The restaurant is very quirky and a great romantic setting. Over all very good place and would recommend a meal.More

Very disappointed. And never felt so unwanted .From the outside the place looks great. However go inside and never been anywhere so dismal. I've been a chef for 8+ years, Working in some of the top restaurants in both the UK and new Zealand. I...wouldn't really classify this as 'italian' but more of a bad representation of Italian food. I wouldn't really say it's a great place to visit.... When there are plenty more restaurants that are way above the bicycle thief level. I had the carbonara, it was bland, and just swimming in cream, it was under seasoned and goes against all that a carbonara should be firstly starting off with the wrong type of pasta used. My cousin had the ravioli which again was just a buttery mess. Service was very disappointing, don't see how as a manager you would dress in joggers and a jumper? They didn't even have some of the wines on the menu. We wanted to order another starter or should I say '1st gear' and they had already started cleaning the fryers? Really not right when you're in the middle of service and could potentially have to use it again. The water jugs were filthy and I would hate to see what the kitchens like. Both me and my cousin were up all last night feeling sick, with bad stomachs the day after. The only thing that they are 'thieving' is people's well being when making them ill. Wouldn't go again and advise others to go somewhere else.More

Should be great but average food and service. Some people rave about this place but maybe we were unlucky. It’s sister restaurant, Ratana in Rolleston has the same menu but much better prepared. Same staff issues though - management?

Partner and I were house sitting locally and decided to finally pop by the esteemed Bicycle Thief. We had the bruschetta which we expected to be a stodgy single piece but we’re delighted to see it was three separate variations on the entree. Close second...to Milan in 2012. For mains we had seafood linguine and a pizza which we good quality and very well balanced. So to summarise a faultless experienceMore

We were not given an explanation about the menu as a result 3 of the party received very small portions, wedges were ordered to fill them up. My prawn paster dish tasted great But there was only 2 prawns and the tails was left on....I will not be repeating this event. The staff need training 2 prawns is not a main mealMore

Went out for a dinner for 8. On first site it looks dirty, especially around the bar. Service from the two young girls was ok but managed by a terrible bar manager… who just looked fed up and was rude without actually realising it. Food...arrived fine. Fillet was fine, pasta was fine but the drinks were awful from the bar manager…watery gin and tonic, cloudy, dirty beer… and did I mention he was rude. It ruined it. 1 out 10 for a birthday…More

Been here several times, always been good, not so great this time. The good: pizzas were very tasty and well priced, entrees too were good. The bad: tiramisu $17 soggy sponge sitting in weak coffee, broken biscuit for decoration. Not good enough. A beer will...cost you $13. The restaurant although atmospheric and with nice Italian music was hot and stuffy. We had to open a side door in the end much to the relief of ourselves and other diners. It is a great place but a few things need addressing.More

The food was great but it was 30 degrees outside and the air conditioner was on the other side of the restaurant. Therefore it was stiflingly hot we’re we were sitting which made our dining experience very uncomfortable. My advice would be to request the...side of the restaurant where the air conditioner is on a hot day.More

Hi, Elrwarrior. Thanks for your review. We're pleased that you love our food :) 30 degrees is a lot for our old building to deal with. The windows would have been open to help cool it down. Hope to see you again!

I took my bestie of 60 years to this beautiful quaint Italian Restaurant in Tai Tapu Road, Christchurch. The staff were wonderful and service was fantastic. The food was gorgeous. Proper Italian goodness. I would go back in a heartbeat.

Back again but this time with friends. We ordered 5 entrees to share thinking we weren't very hungry!! Of course the guys needed mains as well and not because they were hungry but because the menu is so tempting. The ladies ordered desserts which we...refused to share! The food is so more-ish and the staff are very attentive. Once again a very satisfying night out.More

Lucy and the crew were fantastic. We had a group of 17 who were catered to efficiently and who made sure our wine was always topped up lol. The food was very good, the portions were huge (a doggy bag will be needed if you...order one pizza yourself 😅). The caprese and Caesar salads were huge and delicious, I didn’t have the lambshanks but the happy noises coming from those that did indicates they were pretty good too. I’d definitely recommend The Bicycle Thief as not only a pop in and have a meal location but as an event location (our event was a wedding). Well done!More
