Tripadvisor’s approach to reviews
Before posting, each Tripadvisor review goes through an automated tracking system, which collects information, answering the following questions: how, what, where and when. If the system detects something that potentially contradicts our community guidelines, the review is not published.
When the system detects a problem, a review may be automatically rejected, sent to the reviewer for validation, or manually reviewed by our team of content specialists, who work 24/7 to maintain the quality of the reviews on our site.
Our team checks each review posted on the site disputed by our community as not meeting our community guidelines.

All you can eat breakfast buffet was amazing I went here with my partner it was our first time trying out the breakfast buffet. There was a lot of variety of foods my personal favourite was the crispy bacon and the pancakes made by the...chef. Staff were just so welcoming and we wanted to personally thank Rosa who greeted us so warmly with here smile and energetic personality she made sure we had a pleasant time dinning with them keep up the amazing team work and we definitely will be back next time.More

Huge shoutout to our waitress, Wade! She was so friendly and helpful, and saw to it that my very picky celiac stomach was properly accomodated. Thank you so much for a lovely evening <3

My wife and I were staying in the James Cook hotel and had dinner in Whitby's. I was not very hungry and ordered the pea and ham soup of the day, which was quite good. My wife ordered a 'Toastie' and could not eat it...as the harissa spice completely overwhelmed the pesto, the chicken and halloumi cheese. As a result, Whitby's did not charge her for the dish.More

Went to Whitbys last year and as you can see from my review we loved it. It was closed for lunches for quite a while this year due to staffing issues. We went today and what a disappointment. The restaurant was half empty and I...can why... The food, the food, the food, terrible is the only word I could use for the mains, so little selection, did I miss it there are meant to be two kinds of soup - there was nothing but seafood chowder. The salads - few and far between and they looked horrible where are the salads with a whole lot of vegetables?? Tough chicken, no beef anywhere, ham that was cold under tinfoil. No one cooking hotdogs, roast vegetables smothered with pepper. The standard of the food was so bad and I am not fussy but crikey $49 no way. I used to love this place so much and had been waiting for it to reopen. The desserts were good - but that is not enough. Our family won't be back.More

We were very excited to go here given the amazing reviews to only be VERY disappointed. The food was the same standard as the pre-cooked meals from new world (at least they come hot). Considering this is the same price as other nice restaurants in...Wellington, this is not acceptable. One silver lining - the service was lovely.More

Located on the 17th floor of the James Cook hotel, a business trip with colleagues had us visiting the bar. First impressions of the bar area felt dated, it was dark and lacked atmosphere, the bar is attached to the dining area where we had...dinner too. Large dining room and plenty of seating, staff were friendly and pushed a couple of tables together for the group of 8 of us. I ordered prawns for entree and the beef burger for my main. It take take a while for our dinner to come out, the prawns were just 3 prawns cooked and presented with flavoursome sauce, but it definitely wasn’t worth $26 …for 3 prawns, that’s like $8.6 per prawn and we are not talking tiger prawns…. The beef burger was delicious but again, not a $34 burger with chips and no sauce, considering Wellington offers burger on a plate and different prices. The $19 cheesecake was $8 at best. So, apart from the slow service, the pricing was the disappointment, too high. The only saviour to this review, was the full buffet breakfast the next morning, which did outshone the dinner, lots to choose from and fresh omelettes made to order, I really loved the mini corn fritters, highly recommend you try these, very hard to find decent corn fritters.More

I visited the James Cook Whitby Restraunt as a treat for myself and I was extremely satisfied with how excellent the service was. I was seen to by one Finley and I will tell you now that it is worth coming here just for Finley...alone! The food was fantastic and fresh. A wide variety buffet is always appreciated and everything is cooked to perfection. The smell is divine. I will be returning for the lovely service in the future.More

Had a very good green curry chicken here one night. Loved the garlic bread, a simple thing but often overlooked. Was the second dinner I'd had here, both were pretty good, but for me, the standout was the service - excellent, really added to the...experience to make a really pleasant night. Great views over the Harbour and nice music from the Piano player also adds to a nice ambience. Would visit again.More

The focus here is not on the size of the dish but it's all about the quality and the taste. A lovely setting overlooking the city with a great friendly service.

My partner and I dined at Whitbys on a Tuesday evening. Having never been before. The atmosphere was nice, with a lovely view of the city from the 17th floor of the Grand Chancellor hotel. The service was very good, with very regular check-ins on...the dining experience and quality of our meals. My partner had the Risotto and said this of it "It was the best Risotto I have ever had" I had the Salmon and this was fine, perhaps one small comment would be that the portion size definitely left room for desert. Which we had. My partner a lovely selection of cheeses and I had the Banana Cream Parfait. Both of which were lovely. Would definitely recommend to friends and family alike for a lovely dining experience.More

Went to the lunch buffet $39. A great selection of food. Chicken, ham on the bone, beef stew, pork belly and lots of vegetables and salads. The desserts were great! My only complaint would be the potatoes were cold. What lovely staff they have there...a big shout out to Rosa she is a star!More
