After discovering this fabulous cafe and enjoying coffees and cake we returned several times including for breakfast and lunch. We loved the quirky decor, great view and wonderful service every visit. We were particularly impressed by their lunch menu. Highly recommended.

Sat 16/3@3.20pm: my husband & I had a look in the cabinet to see if there was still food available given the time of day. There was, much to our delight and we turned to ask a waitress if we should order at the counter or go to one of the tables ?. There were numerous available tables. There was no queue of people waiting for a table. On our initial arrival no staff were manning the place where people wait to be seated. At this point in time we weren’t looking to be seated as weren’t sure there was suitable food for our needs still available at this hr of the day. What followed was a most unacceptable & unexpected attitude towards us. We were pointedly asked whether or not we had waited at the queuing space to be seated. We explained we had just checked the cabinet. But our courteousness to enquire whether we be seated or order at the counter clearly didn’t register with the the staff member who was now joined by another staff member and between them this insistence that we must queue at the spot that says queue, continued. Finally we were given menus and we made the comment that there was clearly an issue of some rudeness here. Both flounced off and stood giggling and recounting between themselves this very unnecessary and unkind exchange they had created. We placed the menus down and left. We have often frequented Maranui over the years but this negative, unhelpful attitude we’d not encountered before. The ‘delight’ in these two female’s stance, in how they’d handled this small minded ridiculous act of ‘power’ over customers was awful.

This popular cafe has sensational views over Lyall bay. On peak lunch hour on week ends you may need to queue for a table but not for coffee /tee snacks around 15-17 just before closing time. Milk, thick and green -shakes are delicious. We tried lunch too and enjoyed the burgers. Staff is attentive and the decor quite funky. A must if in the area!

We visited here for a late breakfast. Not going to lie, it was kinda tricky to find, as although it was the only building at this address, the exterior looks quite run down and isn't immediately obvious as a café (presumably because it doubles as a surf club). You have to go up a flight of stairs where you are likely to run into a queue. But it moves quickly and we were seated within 10 minutes. We were given menus to review while we waited so by the time we got a table we could order straight away. I would say we were eating within 30 minutes of arriving, despite having to join the queue for a table. They have cabinet food available and a good menu. We had pancakes and a full breakfast, and both were delicious. We scored a great window seat and had a nice view of the beach and airport off to the left, so could watch the incoming planes. It's a bit of a hike if you're coming from the CBD but worth if. A decent amount of parking available along the beach. Would visit again.

We were lucky enough to have a table in the bay window and it was lovely to watch waves crash into the bay. The food was great, especially the ice coffee. It’s a lovely spot, we went during the winter so can imagine it’s very busy in the summer. Would recommend if you get a chance.

This has been the second time we have tried Maranui Cafe, last month and this month. We came back because we thought maybe the first time was a one-off of poor customer service. I’m disappointed to say this time was also terrible. Maranui cafe could be making a LOT more money than it probably is. Left standing waiting in a queue whilst others sneak in and order from the cabinet and sit down? Then there must have been 5 empty tables that needed clearing whilst had large number of people in a queue. If you’re not processing orders you’re not making $$. Staff seemed oblivious to the situation, or not trained to deal with high volumes of people. They clearly need some training. I accept it’s hard to find staff at the moment but there are some basics everyone can learn to improve. Staff just seem like they’re on island time, too cool… Food was average and wait time was long…30mins. Dogs are allowed, that’s fine, but staff, don’t pat the dog and then handle plates and cutlery…gross! My observations are some simple fixes in process would make this place really great. Lucky the views are a redeeming feature no matter the weather.

On a recent visit two dogs (obviously pet dogs as opposed to "assistance" dogs were having a barking match inside the cafe. One of the waiting staff went over and patted one of the dogs and then served a plate of food to another stable (without washing her hands). Your staff are great and so is your food but this is a surefire way to extinguish your long-term customer base. Why are you letting people brings their pets into your cafe and risking other people's health and safety?

Real surfing vibe in this busy sea side cafe. Interesting food choices and plenty of drinks options, including the excellent Hardy Boys dry lemonade. Great views of surfing and kite surfing while you eat. Laid back but efficient staff

I usually really rate Maranui’s thickshake and smoothies which have been filled to the top of their ‘longest drink in town’ takeaway cups. Today I went in and paid $11 and received this takeaway cup half full. The worst part was, when I brought this up to staff they argued that’s how it’s always been and didn’t want a bar of it. If you’re looking for a takeaway smoothie or thickshake that’s actually full for around the $11 mark I would suggest to go to somewhere like Beach Babylon to avoid disappointment and bad service.

The best food and coffee! The service is great but would be better if the waiting time for the table and food is not so long.

Gluten free and gluten free options on menu. On inquiry waiting staff chatted to chef who explained they do not have a dedicated gf fryer. Impressed with the communication

Midweek and somewhere between breakfast and lunchtimes but the place was heaving never the less! Had to wait a little while - maybe 5 mins - for a table, several came available at the same time and the lovely wait lady let me choose which. All the staff were very friendly and pleasant, and coped superbly with the extremely busy morning. The food is always good with a range of styles to suit everyone. And that view! Fave spot!

I always enjoy returning here. The service, food and ambience is excellent. Staff are following Covid protocol, masks are worn properly, though the tables are a tad too close together.
