Tripadvisorโ€™s approach to reviews
Before posting, each Tripadvisor review goes through an automated tracking system, which collects information, answering the following questions: how, what, where and when. If the system detects something that potentially contradicts our community guidelines, the review is not published.
When the system detects a problem, a review may be automatically rejected, sent to the reviewer for validation, or manually reviewed by our team of content specialists, who work 24/7 to maintain the quality of the reviews on our site.
Our team checks each review posted on the site disputed by our community as not meeting our community guidelines.

This long-established restaurant continues to deliver high quality in the heart of Thorndon, just a short distance away from the Wellington CBD. The food has a classic French influence with a modern twist. Every plate of food was beautifully presented and cooked to perfection. We...loved it!More

My wife and I had a thoroughly delightful and delicious dinner this past Saturday night. The atmosphere, with the tables topped with linen and the quiet classical music playing, was ideal. And the food was even better: perfectly prepared salads and baked salmon. We can't...recommend it highly enough -- and I should add that it was just as wonderful on our second visit as it was on our first.More

Went to Aubergine for a birthday dinner and it was excellent. Each course that we had was delicious. I cannot recommend the snails enough as an entree. We had the salmon, beef, lamb and duck and the cheese, creme brulee and chocolate mousse. All of...them were excellent. The service was great and the chef came and had a chat with us at the end of the night. I would not hesitate in recommending Aubergine to anyone who is looking for a wonderful dinner in Wellington.More

What an exceptional experience my wife and I had for a special night out at Aubergine Cafe. A very warm welcome from our host, and we were shown to our table, a beautifully set table looking out on the evening going by on Tinakori Rd....The menu has a good variety of dishes suitable for all tastes and the accompanying wine list showcased NZ and European wines. We chose the Terrine to share as an entree, and there was ample flavoursome pork and pistachio delight to have on the toasted buttery slices of baguette and accompanying relish. After this we knew we were in for a special meal, and my wife's Aubergine pasta caponata was light and flavoured exceptionally with the aubergine and roasted pepper juices, complemented by the zingy capers. I had the herb roasted lamb rump, and this came out sliced so the delicate pink meat and beautifully rendered fat was showcased on a flavoured bed of chard and well seasoned chick peas. We both enjoyed a side dish of the special of red cabbage, which had a pickle element to the flavour and some duck fat potatoes. Because it was a special evening, we also had some dessert - me the baked chocolate mousse, and my wife, the creme brulee. Both were exceptional and finished off the evening meal on a high. We never felt rushed over our 2 hour long meal, and valued the time taken by the host who we also found out is the owner along with her husband the chef, to talk with us about the meal and ingredients. It is great to see such a long standing business still part of the community. We will certainly enjoy a return visit when next in Wellington.More

My visit on Saturday was the 7th so far this year - can't get enough of their delicious food! The crispy duck is the best, but if I've had that recently I can branch out and choose something else. This time I had the lamb,...which was perfectly cooked and tasted fantastic. I have also grown to love the side dish "of the day", the braised red cabbage done in a sweet and sour style. My favourite dessert is the baked chocolate biscuit mousse, which is much lighter than it sounds. Getting hungry again just thinking about it!More

Aubergine cafe is our restaurant of choice for dining out. We've been going there for many years. The menu offers French cuisine and never varies so we know what's on offer, although we always go for the crispy duck. The food is consistently top-notch. The...service is great. The hosts remember their customers. We love the quiet atmosphere, aided by quiet classical background music, where we can have a delicious meal and chat without having to strain to hear. We always go early, around 6 p.m. when it's quietest and highly recommend this restaurant to anyone.More

It never sets a good scene when you are the only diners on a Friday night and every other neighbouring restaurant is packed to the gunnels. Nevertheless, we wanted French-fare so Aubergine it was. We began with a shared dish of "snails," not escargot, which...we would have expected in a French restaurant. We paid $18.70 for six snails, one of which had not been cleaned and was an unpleasant gritty and crunchy. My wife ordered the scotch fillet, which was cooked as requested (medium) and I had the confit duck leg, which again was cooked well, with the meat very tender albeit on the salty side. My dish was supposed to come with bok choy, but instead was served with silverbeet. I usually find silverbeet bitter, but was pleasantly surprised that this was again cooked well. We felt that the hostess should have advised us of the change. The 2019 Shiraz was superb, served at room temp and a smooth fragrant bouquet! The hostess asked if we wanted sides with our mains and we declined, which seemed to surprise the hostess. I am over restaurants bumping up their prices through sides. If what you are serving ain't a full meal, but has a full meal price it shouldn't be served! Sadly our meal was overshadowed by the hostess and chef arguing hammer and tongs out the back. It seemed the chef was mindful of us as we could hear him trying to shush the hostess. However after he had cooked our meals, he gave as good as he got.More
