Stopped in here on a whim after catching a Saturday afternoon movie. We were informed, politely that they had a table but we would have to be out in 50 minutes. We took it and I was glad we did. My chicken curry was the best I've ever had, with just the right amount of heat and flavour for me. The wait staff were polite and friendly, and kept our water glasses filled to the brim, which is rare for New Zealand restaurants in this price range. Our mocktails were delicious too. I thoroughly recommend and am keen to try some of the other offerings on the menu.

After hearing rave reviews from a family member I had high expectations. I probably made a poor choice for my lunch, should have gone with the lunch specials., but instead decided to try Bao for the first time. The 3 that I chose came with fillings of soft shell crab (excellent), eggplant tempura (needed salt before battering) and fried tofu (tasty). All 3 came with a generous blob of different tasty sauces, coriander and shredded salad for crunch. I did not eat the bao 'buns' which are essentially tasteless white bread to hold the filling with. The table staff were super friendly and helpful. Next time I will do what the staff member had suggested and try one of the specials which everyone else had and looked and smelt very good. Live and learn!

We visited for dinner on our first night in Wellington. We booked the restaurants all 1-2 days in advance wary of missing out in the capital if we didn't and were glad we did. The place was full when we arrived with our table waiting for us. We had enjoyed some snacks at a nearby bar so went straight for mains. I had "grandmas beef curry" whilst my partner ordered the vegan curry. Both were accompanied by rice which like in many other restaurants was a small serving for the amount of curry and we ended up ordering more rice to finish the meal off. We also ordered a plate of stir fried seasonal vegetables which were delicious, with the perfect balance of crunch of the cashew nuts and salt from the soy sauce. Fantastic service with staff regularly topping up water without you having to ask which was refreshing to see. Large portions so we were stuffed unable to order dessert. Thoroughly enjoyable meal with great flavours in their curry. Would definitely recommend.

Despite booking, our table wasn't ready on time. After being seated it then took half an hour to get one of the two drinks we ordered - I eventually had to order a different drink or wait another 15 minutes. Dinner was delicious however while we asked to see a menu to order dessert, after 20 minutes we realised the menu wasn't coming and it was probably just time to give up.

We went here for my wife's birthday, knowing it would be casual but great food (we have eaten here before). The food certainly lived up to expectations- the shared platters and choice are super tasty and good fun. But the service was very disappointing. We weren't expecting silver service but did expect a bit of warmth, an occasional smile, even eye contact and a modicum of enthusiasm would have been good. Sadly, the several staff who waited on us were uniformly dour and appeared uninterested. Either there had been a calamity in the business or some customer service training is desperately required.

Went here for dinner after hearing such amazing things but was quite disappointed with the service. We ordered a few starters and mains each asking if everything could be brought out at the same time and they said that was fine but everything came out one by one so the time i had finished my food my friends food hadn’t even come out so we ended up waiting almost 1.5 hours till all our food had come out. They also forgot one of the dishes after an hour we asked and said we can have it in 10 mins or they can give us a discount on it. Overall the food was really yum tho but we would’ve ordered dessert and more drinks if they were offered. Maybe would get uber eats / deliver easy since the food was nice still

Booked 2 weeks out for 5 people, arrived to find 2 x 2 people tables pushed together, not a fit for our group and we were able to be moved to more suitable seating. Service was friendly but slow, after 40 minutes we flagged someone down to order. Food arrived relatively quickly with mixed reviews some dishes were great some were not. We were unable to re-order drinks or dessert as our table was largely ignored by staff. In the end we thought it easier to leave and get dessert elsewhere.

The food here is consistently good, with a wide range of options on the menu. We arrived with a group of 4 and the place was packed, even at 8pm on a Saturday. The atmosphere was good and we ordered some drinks and starters (cocktails, chicken wings and pork dumplings,) which were all delicious and arrived promptly. I had the caramelized pork belly as my main - a generous helping of meat cooked to perfection. The skin was crunchy, while the meat practically melted in my mouth. - exactly how pork belly should be. The flavours are on point and reminded me of my trip to Hanoi. Highly recommend to anyone looking for a Vietnamese restaurant in Wellington.

We looked at this restaurant before we visited and were pleased to get a table. We had cocktails to start with chicken wings as a starter and then the duck curry for me and the beef curry for my husband. Both the food and cocktails were delicious (although some gristle in the duck curry) however the service was rushed. We asked to be able to finish our cocktails before ordering food but after being asked five times if we were ready to order we made our order and asked for it to arrive after we had finished our cocktails; the starter arrived when we were barely halfway through our cocktail, then the main arrived when we had barely begun our starters. As a result our longed for chilled evening lasted less than 45 minutes. Needless to say we didn’t bother with deserts!

We went on a Monday evening to take advantage of the $10 bao and bubbles deal. The soft shell crab bao is my favourite but their whole range is nice and it's easy to swap out sauces if you have different preferences. We also tried the zucchini fritters, duck & lychee curry, and the beef short rib. These are probably the 3 favourite dishes of mine. Loaded with fresh flavours and goes perfectly with coconut rice. The staff are very accommodating and the vibe is great for both casual catch ups and semi-formal outings. Ka Pai team!

There is much to love about The Old Quarter and it certainly represents good value for money. Our summer rolls were fresh and vibrant, the vege and pork dumplings tasty, the pork and soft shell crab bao were pronounced as excellent and the chicken wings were crispy and moorish. Bun Cha Hanoi was a bit of a let down due to being greasy but this was the only significant food issue. The beef salad was tender and flavourful, the orange and duck salad had real depth of flavour and the vegan green curry exceeded all expectations. Sticky rice pudding was a much better bet than the chocolate and caramel mousse which was too dense and one dimensional in it's sweetness. Service was friendly and proactive from the young man looking after our water. The main wait person had almost no menu or wine list knowledge, you had to ask for everything, every time (plates, serving implements, wine glasses, etc) and there was a mistake with our order and a substituted wine with no warning. Overall we had a great night because we were relaxed, the food was much better than the attention shown the primary member of floor staff who "looked after" us. We will happily return and hope for better luck next time.

We came for a dinner on a Wednesday which is 2 for 1 cocktails, there was a lot of great options for drinks and food. I am gluten-free so was grateful for the amount of options that suited me aswell, and staff were helpful in making sure what we got was suitable for our dietary needs. We ordered sides of stir fried vege and fried rice along with the pork ribs and a platter style plate with noodles and meatballs and spring rolls. Was more than enough food shared between 2. The pork ribs were not very filling as they were mostly fat and bone which was disappointing but the flavours were good. Would go again and order other things to try out more of their menu, the beef curry is on my list for next time!

The three of us were well advised by our server and had an excellent meal...very tasty well flavoured dishes and great desserts. There was a good selection of non alcoholic drinks and plenty of veggie options. Quick and friendly service too. Good value. Well worth seeking out.

Went along with a party of 6 and looking for a meal we could share and try different flavours and tastes. The old quarter was perfect with Vietnamese inspired food. Amazing tastes beautifully cooked at a reasonable price. We had a number of cocktails to celebrate the night. Great staff, busy, but interesting with a casual relaxing "laid back" atmosphere which was perfect place to have a meal to share with friends.

Great service and food! We were running slightly late and the staff were happy to move our reservation. The wait staff were attentive to the right degree, making sure we had ordered and checking in to make sure we were happy with meals. They provided good recommendations. The food came out quickly and was really tasty. We ended up getting lots of little plates to share and every dish was excellent. I’d definitely recommend this restaurant and look forward to coming back.
