We're vegetarians who rely a fair amount on Indian food when traveling. Great India was right on point. The food was mildly spicy and included both standard and unique combinations. The drinks menu, both alcoholic and non-alcoholic was extensive. We really enjoyed our evening.

We went sunday dinner in Great india our second day for food tasting.
Indian food is a very good choice after a lot of tasteless food in Wellington, and here it is really good, nothing was overcooked, the open wines they offered by glass are even good. Fast and friendly service.I really love this place !!!!!

A fantastic authentic Indian meal with fresh quality ingredients.
Service was great with a selection of dishes from mild to hot along with plenty of accomplishments.
Can see why this restaurant has won awards.
Also a good selection of beverages from craft beers, wine, gin to enjoy with your meal.
We enjoyed Mango Chicken for those who don’t like spicy food this was perfect plus the Chicken dopiaza for those who like a little more spice.
In all a must visit if in Wellington.

My husband is a huge Indian foodie and we were so dissapointed with this food, it started badly when the plates were dirty to be fair the waiter did replace them when i asked and he apologised. The Naan bread was not cooked properly and was very greasy, our curries were awful I couldn't eat mine the onion bhajees had food dye and again were soggy not crisp. The staff are very friendly and attentive but this food is not to our taste.

I'm a local and have been coming to this Wellington insitution for literally decades. For a period it was weekly for a Friday lunch. Usually the owner is running the show and it has been top notch. Impeccable food and service.
My last visit when I brought out of town friends was when the owner wasn't working and it was a train wreck. I'd.like to be able to excuse it for being full of customers (it wasn't) or low on staff (as someone who's worked extensively in hospo there appeared to be twice as many front of house staff as was required to run the service).
The non-vege mixed entrees that are meant to show off their great selection of dishes took an hour to arrive and were small, cold and unappealing.
Despite a fleet of young front of house staff working they didn't clear plates or empty glasses or check on anything - so we cleared our table for them. Not good.
Then after 50 mins our mains turned up. First of all the breads. They sat there for 10 mins to go nice and stone cold before the mains turned up. Requested spice levels had been ignored. Rice followed. Luke warm. Gross.
Meats that were supposedly meant to be cooked in a tandoor oven appeared to be pan fried and had zero char and smokiness.
We spoke to the guy who appeared to be running the shift and he literally didn't want to know about our feesback. It's a real shame as I've been coming here for years but won't be back again.
I suggest anyone craving good curry to try one of the other fine Indian restaurants in Wellington - Taste of India is the best albeit take away only.
This one is sadly past its best before date and without the fantastic owner on the floor to keep the wheels turning was a true unappetising shambles. Avoid.

Very disappointing evening. I was guided to Great India by friends but the food and presentation lacked the normal Indian character.
We had an arranged menu which was explained by the waiter, but most could not hear.
While the sources were tasty, the food was cold and the chicken was tough and dry. When I retrieved a piece on my plate it was totally a piece of bone.
The staff were top rate.

We came here really hungry after a day around Wellington amd was very disappointed by the condiments, crunchiness of poppadoms amd flavour pf our curries. Whilst we understand it will be different from the UK, we gave had other curries whilst in NZ that have tasted much better and more flavour. Service was attentive though so cant fault that. But as previously mentioned dont come herw if your a brit as you will be disappointed

Ordered biryani with Indian level spiciness. They gave me oily fried rice with raisins and kept calling it Biryani. The sauce was sugar sweet and characterless, didn’t know what to do with it too.
Utterly disappointing experience today because as someone who spent almost a decade throughout India I know what Biryani is and what fried rice is.
The staff were nice but none of them was I didn’t feel excited to give them feedback but I hope they can see with my quarter eaten dish and untouched sauce that the food was horrible.
My workmates booked a table a week in advance and were excited to experience Indian food because I recommended this restaurant. Well…lesson learned last time I recommend it.

As always, the mains were fantastic - tasty and the right level of spice and the service was very good
We had the platter for 2 for an entree and having experienced the same thing at other Indian restaurants when the platter comes out sizzling on a hot plate, I was surprised that it came out on a normal plate. The food on the dish was okay taste wise but it was luke warm at best which makes me wonder if it had been prepared well ahead of time and was not just cooling down after the cooking process. It was far too cold for that. Did it put me off this restaurant? Possibly yes. If I go there again, I will not order this.

Even though our meal was on Easter Sunday we got wonderful food and service - right from booking, to warm towels when paying.
This was some of the best vegan food we’ve had in Wellington. Spicy and tasty.
The manager was delightful and a role model for his lovely staff, who were super busy walking around the restaurant actually LOOKING to provide service.
Our whole dining experience was perfection.

On a short overnight business trip in Wellington, I took a stroll down Dixon St where there is no shortage of food options. Great India was empty on my (early) arrival but filled quickly.
Very attentive staff greeted me, and my order was taken quickly. I went for my default Indian option, chicken madras, and a keema naan. I must say, the food was excellent, certainly freshly prepared. The naan in particular was great.
I would certainly recommend Great India if you find yourself in Wellington.

A Wellington Icon that maintains a consistently high standard year after year! We had a work function early in the week and were privileged to be served by Rakesh the owner. There is an immense pride associated with Great India- Rakesh's Dad started it many years ago and it is indeed very rare to see a family restaurant that continues to thrive and provide excellent hospitality. We went with the 'feed me" option- it was thoroughly enjoyed by the whole group. Outstanding food with something to suit everyone.! Great wine available and the secret family recipe frozen G&T's are the best use of the spirit on the planet. Highly recommend- well done Team Great India!

Best Indian in Wellington I'd say. Have looked long and hard for a place that uses chicken breast instead of thigh. Coming from UK it's what we're used too. I know kiwis prefer thigh but I don't. Very tasty and great service. On busy nights it takes a good hour for the food to come out but when it does, it sure is worth the wait!

A party of 3 looking forward to our Indian meal. We'll, we are still looking - this cook appears to have no idea about taste, flavour or species ( served beef instead of lamb). The food was bland and made without thought or understanding. Service and staff were fine, however nothing can detract from the poor food served here.
Give this establishment a miss.

We’ve been struggling to find a good curry since moving to NZ, and we got quietly excited when we read in the menu that the chefs “perfected their trade” in Leicester… home to our favourite curry houses. Great India did not disappoint. The food was perfect, I couldn’t praise it enough. And to top it off, the service was superb. We will be back!
