I am a bit conflicted on this restaurant. A shaky 4. The staff were great and there was reasonably priced ($70) sparkling wine amidst an average of $250 red wine… Food was good…ish. Steak tartare special was not hand cut and not raw… it had...been marinated too long and “cerviched” itself. Three scallops on a starter for @$35 a bit disappointing… as to pippi sized clams… these were small and tasteless… disappointing no oysters as the supermarket across the road still had bluff stocks… The linguine was silky smooth and great… as too the lamb cutlets… vegetable plates were tiny for the cost but well prepared. I think the kitchen could do better with portions to the cost and attention to detail … an indifferent tartare and not enough seafood on the menu for what this restaurant bases itself on.More

Absolute top-notch must-go restaurant with absolutely no weaknesses from the welcome to the good night. Wonderful food and wine from Woah to go. Great, sometimes quirky, service, expert wine knowledge and really lovely people. The wine and drinks list is perfectly curated with some of...the best NZ and international wines. The age of some of the wines has them drinking at their very best. Like the wine, it is nearly too hard to choose the food with the deepest list of delicious specials in Wellington. Thank you thank youMore

I have probably reviewed before and given Capitol a 5-star ranking, that is why we decided to go last night. Unfortunately they must have fallen on hard times, dinner last night was a very big disappointment. 1 Clam and sardine entre was dominated by raw...onions, so much so that I could not tell if it had a single sardine, only the clams were evident because they were so tough. 2 My meal was Lamb fillets, they had been cooked extremely well, but were colder than the plate, ie the meal must have been sitting on the bench for a long time. Pity, because the sauce was very nice. But cold seared lamb, nope. 3 Venison was slightly overcooked and was also cold on the surface, but worse was the combination of venison and a sharp flavoured red cabbage. This is probably our 3rd or 4th visit, and we were returning because we liked it last time. Not sure that we will return. Almost $200 would have gone a long way at better restaurants.More

Oh goodness, what a kind and helpful staff in a quaint spot. We were four friends who shared the clam linguine, pumpkin risotto, and the filet. We also had some Bluff oysters. The risotto looks unassuming but it will easily be one of the best...outside of Italy you’ll ever have, and not too rich. The clams and oysters were fresh and light as was the linguine and sauce.More

I don’t usually review dining experiences here, but this restaurant deserves it. What an amazing experience. The food is spectacular (we had the vongolle linguine, the lamb rack, and the venison) with a bottle of a very nice Chateauneuf-du-Paupe. All very well done, good size...portions. The clam linguine was simply outstanding. We enjoyed a very friendly service from Olivia, so a special shout-out to her. The desert was a very good panna cotta with baked cherries. This is now on our “must-do” dining list whenever we visit Wellington. Well done, guys, keep up the great work!More

We were staying in an airbnb up Majoribanks Street and drove by. We could not make reservations at the other restaurants we knew in Wellington so we simply walked in around 7 pm and asked if they had a table available. They did, and the...rest of the evening was a real treat. Our meals were excellent (venison dinner, grilled nectarines & prosciutto + scallops, plus crème brulé). Wine selection excellent and the Capitol gin mix was nice. Toby our server was on top of everything as was the other server/maître d’. And I have never seen a dishwasher work so hard and quickly! He had a huge amount of dishes all at once. Capitol reminded me of several intimate restaurants I have eaten at in Paris. Lovely. You won’t be disappointed.More

For WOAP, they offered the crayfish soufflé which is a drawcard for me, this was offered as part of a 3 course special for dine Wellington. The main was venison which I do not normally order but so glad I went with the set menu,...it was sublime. The waitperson was possibly new and took care to check and tell us that we ordered the last portions of the soufflé. 3 of us had the set menu, 2 ordered off the menu. All of us agreed that the crayfish soufflé was incredible, so flavoursome and delicious. The venison, my god! I could not believe how tender it was, it was served on top of potato pave and the sauce was truly plate lickable, we all scrapped every drop off that plate. The risotto eater found his portion a little large and couldn't quite finish it, the liver eater really enjoyed her dish. We all loved our dining experience here again. One of us got the wrong cocktail (but he had checked and she didn't speak up about it even when it was delivered) however, they noticed it undrunk and subbed it off the account. Long may Capitol continue it great food offerings.More

We stumbled upon this restaurant at Matariki as all the big name restaurants were booked out. We couldn't see much about it online but took a chance. Boy did it pay off! The location was on a corner with plenty of window seating. The bright...lights and business of outside was a world away from the warm cosy inside of the restaurant. I highly recommend window seating. The staff were highly attentive with beautiful manners. We were happy with the pricing too. Food was well preportioned, small enough to.be able to have entree main and dessert, but big enough to feel Full after doing so. Highlight for us was the bluff oysters. Natural with white balsamic, and tempura battered with homemade tartare. Exceptional flavour pairings throughout rest of menu. Hubby had saltimbucca Veal, I had lamb. Something for everyone and specials too. I hope it stays off the radar, so I can book again easily!More

My friend and I visited on Sunday night. We had a wonderful experience. The restaurant was packed, which created a vibrant environment in the cosy dining room. The antipasto entree was a highlight. A great selection of red meat, fish and veges. The wait staff...were attentive and wonderful. Kate was a true host and could articulate the menu and wine list like a true professional. Would highly recommend for a visit in the capital.More

Last visit was about 2 months ago. Food terrific; service as good as masks can allow; wine list eclectic and very, very well-chosen. Not overly expensive. However, no alcohol-free choices in beer or wine. Mentioned that to the good folk. Back again 2 days ago...- real examination of Vax pass. Made the "mistake" of having the pork with 2 cabbage and quince vinaigrette. Now I must have that vinaigrette with every meal. Previous visit had wonderful fish. I suspect every fish dish will be terrific as lots of thought had gone into the market choice. The bruscetta starter was surprisingly powerful - small pieces of chilli just added a new dimension. And the wine list was even more eclectic! No same-old, same-old here! But...the masked server recognised my wife and pointed out that an Af beer was now on the list! Service with a smile (possibly hidden under the mask of course!). And, in honour of another staff member - jings, crivens, help ma boab! Cracker!More

Came in here for the Burger Wellington, 3 of us had that and 2 of us had other dishes off the menu and all of them were faultless. The Garage Project Beer match with the burger was close to perfection. The grilled chicken was impeccable,...and the chorizo was a banger. Service was fantastic on all fronts. Can’t recommend enough, will definitely be back when we’re back in Wellington.More

Thus was my second visit. I think they are getting complacent from the number of rave reviews they have received. The food is indeed innovative but - we ordered bread to start. It was burnt and almost inedible - my main course was liver with...breadcrumbs. It was overcooked and semi burnt -one of our vegetable orders did not arrive with the main course. We had finished when it arrived - wine selection is extraordinarily expensive. Minimum price $70 per bottle and most over $100 I won't be going again in the immediate future. Maybe they can address my issues.More
