Great food, avoid cocktails.

Food tasted amazing, let down by terrible cocktails. Steaks, burgers, chicken, sides and starters came out promptly and tasted delicious: 5 stars. Our drinks sadly were below standard (although they did try to improve them, this was done with reluctance)

Taupo's Best Restaurant!

It was Valentines day in 2 days, I booked for 2 of us, on the day, our daughter came with us, I'd neglected to let the restaurant know. When we got there our host was honest and up front, he said it was likely he did not have a table for 3 available that night. He did not turn us away, but asked us to give him a couple of minutes, in that time he found a way to allow us to enjoy The Steak Houses finest food, service and ambience. Once seated we were attended by excellent wait staff who knew their menu's and were happy to guide us in our choices. Seriously their steaks are to die for, T Bone, x 1, eye fillet x 1 and Sirloin x 1 were our choices. Our entrees came and were perfect, the timing of the service was as if by magic, no sooner had you thought about a menu, a drink, there they were, their attention to detail and their professional competency was absolutely amazing. Yes we were grateful to have been able to stay and enjoy a meal, but that isn't why this review is so generous. That is entirely down to this restaurants overall ability to welcome you, wait on you and make sure your dining experience was brilliant, thank you The Steak House. As refugees from Dorkland who now live in Taupo, we know our restaurants and of all the restaurants in Taupo that we have already experienced. This is without a doubt, the top of the chain! Mark C

Best dining experience in Taupo

We made a booking for a busy valentines day, we were seated quickly and the atmosphere was lovely. The waiter, Gurtej, took our order quickly, we ordered all food and drinks at once and to our surprise, we received the cocktails before he finished taking our order. This has never happened before, the prompt service is unmatched. The food was lovely and we were checked on multiple times, giving us every opportunity to order more drinks or advise of any issue (there were none). we received our entrees quickly and after mains, we realized that we had only been there for an hour and finished all food and drinks. It is rare in Taupo to be finished up and ready to go after an hour, you are usually still waiting for mains. by far the best dining experience we have had in Taupo. Thank you to our waiter, Gurtej, for the incredible service and all the back of house staff for the yummy food and drinks.

Not brilliant service

A very disappointing meal, what should have been an easy order, one eye fillet Med. swap daily potato for chips, one med rare eye fillet as is, one white wine one red! So the both steaks came out Medium, they did suggest they could take it back and cook a medium rare, but when there are only 2 of you. What were we going to do? One watch the other eat their meal, then eventually vice versa! So I put up with the Med 58.00 steak, when we paid the bill there was a 3.00 extra charge for the swap from potato to chips, no mention on the menu there was a charge, but they did say you could swap out the potato for chips! I would not go back!

Absolute letdown. Don’t bother

What a let down. Our family often groups in Taupo for the school holidays and this was a huge letdown, am shocked as they change such big prices for terrible cooked mass production food. I feel like this might have been a good restaurant years ago but they never updated the menu and as price rise they substituted quality food with cheap slop and cheap travelling backpacker waiters. Had the Eye filet, was terrible. Mash was nice. Chips good. They have mastered the art of potatoes just not the meat?! It’s not the a potato house. Salads came from a pigs bucket, cold and sloppy - bulk produced. Only two wait staff on was seemingly odd, was a busy night, we had to order drinks at the reception counter as nobody came to ask. Poor service and no smile. Had an open mind and was heavily let down. Overpriced and steak was poorly cooked. I don’t enjoy giving bad reviews but this was a joke of a dinner.

How disgusting! Referring to HUMANS as cheap is absolutely not ok... ever. Salads are meant to be cold so we don't know what you mean by that. All of our food is prepared fresh every day not bulk produced like your assumption. If you were not satisfied with your meal like you say you weren't, why did you not mention this issue while at the restaurant? We were most likely able to sort it out then and there. In reply to my review of The Steak House and their reply the 'manager' said we only looking for a discount. We actually paid the amount in full as we were making our complaint and I wasn't interested in the money. His attitude was terrible and the food was amateurish. He has no idea about customer service or food...you could have played squash with the over cooked scallops and curry powder in the seafood chowder with no seafood was not eaten. 0 out of 10. Do not go there.

Overpriced and under delivered

The layout and ambience of the restaraunt is beautiful their bar area is lovely to sit in and is both cosy and open at the same time. However the food was a massive disappointment. We ordered two entrees and two steaks for the pate to still be cold from the fridge. The scollops were delicious however being a steak house you would think the steak would be melt in your mouth to die for especially at almost 60 dollars per steak meal. My steak was chewy and full of gristle the potatos were boring and flavourless and the mushroom sauce was watery. Overall a disapointing experience

Overpriced and undercooked

The food was reasonably presented and good drinks menu but that's about where the positives stopped. We found it really expensive for very very average food. The side coming with a $50+ steak was cold potato salad and it cost $3 to switch it to chips. Then an additional $7 for a sauce (mushroom, bearnaise etc) steak was chewy and not very tasty. The $46 lamb confit which is served standard as medium rare was completely raw in the middle. Mentioned it to the waitress who just shrugged. Would not go back there, we found much better (and cheaper quality places) in the CBD Vine, Bistro etc that are waaaay better.

Late Dinner

We were looking around for a place that was open around 2000 and we ended up here. They were ok with us arriving late for dinner. After getting the menus it felt like we were forgotten and had to wave a few times to get their attention to order. The menu is like a standard steakhouse with different cuts of steak as well as other non-steak options. I grabbed the scotch and it was quite nice. it was more medium than medium rare but still juicy. The fettuccine was quite nice as was the burger. It was too hard to get someones attention so ended up not getting dessert. The food isn't bad. It was just quite bad service for something quite pricey. If they didn't want customers that late it would have been better to be turned away.

To be honest, I was really looking forward to this, but it fell way short of expectations. My steak was full of gristle and flavorless. Another on the table got the wrong sort of steak, and the beer was not filled to the right level. The Lamb croquettes were stunning though.

Always the best steak in town!

Lovely meal last night in Taupo. We pretty much visit the Steak House every visit and it never disappoints. An audacious question from our waiter “is your steak cooked to perfection?” You need to have confidence to ask this and it was justified. Our eye fillets were incredible!

We had an excellent meal at The Steakhouse. The steak was perfect for each of our tastes, chef was accomodating of our vagaries and service was really friendly. We hadn’t booked at the restaurant was full but the team made us feel so welcome and we’re really engaging while we waited. We loved the experience and will definitely recommend this spot.

Ordered the 500gm T Bone at

Ordered the 500gm T Bone at $54.00. Very disappointed as it arrived served on top of 2 baby potatoes(to make it look bigger) It was like eating a T Bone from Countdown meat counter. It was thin and lacked flavour with sinew on the porterhouse side of cut. Hardly a prime cut of 35 day plus beef. Definitely no where near worth the price tag value...... and not deserving of a ‘Steakhouse’ We won’t be back..... Greg

Thanks for taking time to review us Greg. To begin with, we apologies that we did not meet your expectations on your visit with us. However, I would like to mention that I personally came to your table when this came to my knowledge and explained you everything about steak and I don't think its worth of our time to explain it all again on social media just to clarify anything, Still I would like to mention that there is no doubt that we only use prime beef and we deliver quality food and T-Bone is undoubtedly 35 days aged and 500gm. No better than a pub meal.

Expected great steak !! My wife and I received our “pre-heated” rib eye and scotch steaks within 5 minutes of ordering. Both steaks were barely warm. My scotch was a partially gristle and sinew. Clearly the steaks are pre-prepared. When complaining the waitress said “oh i can take them back and get them reheated”. Really ??? This is a “Steak House” !!! Seeing the sinews and gristle left on my plate she said “did you enjoy the steak ?” . Understand the staff difficulties these days but do they get any training. $150 for a VERY average meal. Worst restaurant experience we have had in many years. Would NEVER go back. Would Not recommend. If you cannot prepare and cook steak properly …… don’t call yourself a steakhouse.

Amazing food, average service, Managers inability to think outside the box

The Food was amazing! Everyone loved it. It took nearly 15 minutes and a call out to the server to get us drinks. We also had to approach for the second round of drinks. We had a booking for 4 and had a last-minute addition. We walked in and asked for a table for 5 people. The restaurant was reasonable busy, with 4 tables(1x4 seater, 2x 6 seater and 1x 12 seater) Luckily we also walked in with a table who had a booking for 5. They believed they had a cancellation so only needed a table for 4. We were all happy. a We sat on a table for 6, they sat on a table for 4. Then not 10 minutes later(before we had been approached for drinks) 3 people sat on a table for 6 next to us. Seriously! We also tried to pay for a round of drinks for the table of 4 who gave up their table for us, but the manager said they did not have the ability to do so....seriously!!? All in all, amazing food, sub service.
