Maybe we didn’t try hard enough but we couldn’t find a decent coffee scene in Taupo apart from the usual franchise type cafes. We did find 2 great places though and The Storehouse was one of them.
We had brunch and coffee there two days in a row and the coffee was perfect both days.
As for food the first day set the bar high with the absolutely delicious chicken waffles and the soft shell crab burger. The only feedback I’d offer for the crab would be to have a thinner Vietnamese style batter rather than a thick batter.
Sadly the second day it was like we were in a completely different place. Mike had a cabinet salmon bagel and the cream cheese had melted away to nothing as it must have been spread whilst hot.
My bagel came out on a dirty smeared plate and my spreads came out in dirty paper dishes with no butter. Come on, regardless of your choice of spread, you always need some butter for bagels. So presentation and cleanliness were fairly terrible on the second day. The photo supplied is how I believe it should’ve been presented (took the spreads one of the dirty serving ramekins and asked for butter) Have a feeling that whoever plated up had been touching something green and didn’t wash it off.
The waiter wasn’t much better unfortunately, grimey filthy pants and a very dirty tshirt. I’m quite happy to overlook that I mean hey I still ate my food but this is the reason I’ve rated 4 instead of 5.
The couple across from us had hard eggs instead of poached and so sent it back. Instead of redoing their meal, she had to wait 30 minutes for two eggs on their own lol. Poor thing.
Would definitely return though especially for the coffee.

Equally, this could be called the greenhouse with a little shop inside selling lush plants.
All ingredients were Uber fresh and individually cared for with full flavour. Loads of textures and visually very appealing. The cabinet food is delightful and the meals are exceptional.
highly recommend

This is a really enjoyable place. I’m so pleased I took the advice of a previous reviewer and sought it out. The vibe is relaxed and welcoming - it’s popular, but you should find a spot. I stopped here for lunch on a rainy day. On my own I was able to find a seat on the mezzanine level, which overlooked the activity of the cafe below. Menu offerings are varied - I ordered the smashed avocado with pineapple (?), salad, pepitas and poached egg. I added smoked salmon. They told me the wait would be 30 minutes and it came in 20, so that was well managed. It was an unusual combination but quite good. Very colourful - I would have preferred it without all the raw onion, but that’s just personal taste I guess. Coffee is excellent. Service is very good. I wouldn’t hesitate to return. Well done to all and thank you.

Took my wife here for lunch, heard it was good. As soon as we arrived it was clear the staff were totally disinterested if we were there or not. We both ordered the Fried Chicken Sandwich, it had stale bread, overcooked hard chicken. Apart from the cost of the food we never got a word from anyone.................how about a smile? Cold, unfriendly, for a while there I was transported to a snobby cafe in Ponsonby. The owners know they are in Taupo??

We especially sought out this cafe, having read about it.
That was a mistake!
No prices were displayed on the cabinet food. I later discovered that I was charged $12.90 for a piece of salmon tart, (no garnish or side salad) which was served luke warm & rubbery - suspected it had been microwaved. My husband's $5.00 scone was doughy!
The cutlery caddy on the table was basically empty, despite it being the morning.
So I had to ask for cutlery & serviettes.
No smiles or apologies from the staff, who didn't seem to care at all.

After changing hands earlier in the year this place has gone from a top contender in place to eat to one I will AVOID from now on!
A while after changing hands I went back to get the tried and tested falafel wrap, only to find it to be a shadow of its former self.. ALL the ingredients had been changed and it had absolutely no flavour compared to what it used to be! (although reasonably price at 9.50)
A few months had passed since then, i decided to give it another go..... Expensive mistake. I got a tropical smoothie bowl for $17, which came in a medium size smoothie cup, it came with fruits, granola and coconut yogurt, unfortunately it was primarily smoothie with those toppings only sitting on the top.
I will not be coming back here!

Keep hoping this place will get back to its old glory days, but every time I go something else has slipped. The nice bread has gone, now they use budget processed ham, the menus are falling apart and the staff no longer smile.
Also I agree with the comment below. When we were there we could see him coughing in the kitchen and never bothering to cover his mouth.

I used to adore coming to this place on my day-off. Coffee was always on point, and their Avo on Toast was the stuff of dreams. Heaps of avo and tonnes of flavour. But the one I ate this weekend couldn't have been further from this. Old avocado (unmistakable taste) and a very thin spread of it. I was so disappointed. Especially since this dish was taken off the menu for winter, I was delighted to see it back and exactly the same. Unfortunately it was a poor copy of something once glorious. We ordered waffles too and they were very dry. Top make things worse, there seemed to be only one member of staff working at the front. We would have liked to have sat outside but the umbrellas were no longer in place so the sun would have been far too strong. Overall a visit that has put me off visiting in the near future. A real shame.

Nice inviting interior but disappointing and overpriced food, and very average coffee. A grilled chicken salad being served as poor quality scraps of completely burnt flavourless poor quality chicken and literally a handful of romain lettuce leaves. Nothing else. For £13. Dirty fries were overkill and hardly any fries. Expensive and didn’t deliver at all, couldn’t eat it. Much better places in the area from our experience.

Very disappointing that we used to visit this place on a regular basis before lockdown. Tried it again this morning for two coffees and a sausage roll between us. The coffees were “warm” the sausage roll arrived and was cold in the middle so it went back, only to be returned from the microwave a couple of minutes later piping hot and soggy. Had a small amount but it was a yucky texture and no taste to it and no apology from the staff! Got out quickly and won’t be going back.
2 x Coffees 1 x Sausage Roll $19.90! RIP OFF!

Good reviews but we found the menu to be extremely limited and our choice (eggs Benedict) had run out! We had the coffee waffle which was ok but not really what we wanted. The coffee was poor. Service was generally pleasant but not enough attention to detail. Sticky table and no glasses with the upstairs water. We would not come back.

We ordered the Chicken waffles and the cauliflower bites.
The waffles was drowned in maple syrup and the chicken was too dry and salty for our tastebuds - seems like it was double fried. Maybe can put the maple syrup on a small dish separately.
The cauliflower bites taste quite interesting as I’ve never tried deep fried cauliflower before. However it is slightly on the burnt side as well.(see pictures).
They do allow dogs 🐕 in the cafe which is good for pet owners though.

We popped in for lunch yesterday and I ordered the Buddha bowl which was just awful! The Kale was yellow and old. The egg was soo runny it looked like snot. The avocado wasn’t smashed, no onion fritter, soo tasteless. I have had the Buddha bowl a few times and I love it but not this time. The Kitchen looked very dirty as did the kitchen staff. There was food on the floor in the kitchen, just looked sloppy, it just wasn’t a good look and it has put me off going back again sorry. We were also over charged.

We have been patrons of The Storehouse for several years but after a second bad experience this year, we won't be back. Should have learnt from our visit in May but thought we would give them one more go. We ordered a Buddha bowl and the fried chicken sandwich. The "poached" egg in the Buddha bowl was as hard as a rock and the chicken was inedible - incinerated - with a tasteless mix of salad and some revolting plastic cheese slices. Not the same establishment since it changed hands. What a shame :-(

What happend to the food, a few weeks ago I would be so excited for the food, came in a few days ago, bloody disgusting. Do you guys have new chefs or something? Got a flat muffin and scone definitely not how they used to be. 2 out of 10 for me. Used to be a 10 out of 10.
