The Bistro is a small family owned restaurant focused on simple clean flavours and honest tasty food from fresh local produce, all in a relaxed causal setting to provide our guests with moments that last a life time.

Wonderful dinning experience yet again! Dinned with some friends on Saturday night and what a treat! Chose the set menu, wonderful value and beautiful food. Calamari was to die for, Beef scotch fillet was beautiful cooked and so tender and the chocolate dessert was a...stunningly good.
Excellent wine list with superb service rounded of a fantastic evening. Thank you and well done The Bistro!More
A little disappointed with our visit 3 of us went for a farewell dinner for a friend. I have to say service was very good. My friend had pate the toast was so dry she could not eat it so just ate the pate with...the salad. I had the crab but I couldnt find any crab or taste it in my dish which was also very small portion for the cost. The mains were nice but they were served in what we would call a cereal bowl so small it didnt enhance the meal at all. And the dessert just totally overpowering with chocolate strong flavour would have been nice to have a lighter option on the plate for the palet. But the most disappointing thing of all was the terrible coffee at the end of the meal. Their first attempt was over extracted burnt and the second attempt not much better. even though I didnt drink mine(twice) they still charged for it.
Good service but the rest for me could have been so much better.More
Having read a lot about this restaurant it was on our list of places to dine at when back in Taupo. The meals were 'nice' however nothing special. Service was good, the atmosphere nice - however the food unexceptional.
We always dine at the Bistro whenever we are in Taupo.
The Monday night we were there, the restaurant was packed and noisy. Our little table was placed close to a big group and the noise level was unbelievable. Only 2 waiters to serve a...full dining room. We waited for at least half an hour before we were served, and finally a table away from the group became vacant, so we shifted away from the noise !
We chose the 3 course fixed menu, it didn't disappoint. The zucchini salad, calamari, pork and scotch fillet were beautifully cooked and matched. The brulee and sundae were delicious.
It was well worth the wait with a lovely meal to follow.
However, whoever took our booking should have warned us about the big group booking so we could change our booking time.
Reservation is essential !!More
Fantastic experience all round.
The steak was the best I have had in a long while - cooked perfectly.Ten out of ten for ambience with subtle background music, standard of service and most of all for the delicious, well presented food.
Will definitely be back.
We were looking for a restaurant to celebrate a special occasion and weren’t disappointed. We were a party of six and all ordered something different from the a la carte menu. Everything was beautifully presented and the flavours exquisite. I ate the Calamari followed by...the lamb backstrap. The waitress was very knowledgeable and friendly. Would love to try the degustation menu if we get a chance to dine here again.More
Impressed with The Bistro Taupo, just had 3 nights away, incl one at a 2 hat Wellington Restaurant, The Bistro probably comes out top after our visit tonight. Well executed decor, faultless efficient service down to the small details that arnt a biggie if missed........but are noticed when every detail is done without fault. Every dish was also very good or excellent, prices fair, servings reasonable, nice touch of complimentary bread and ceviche to start. There is a credit card surcharge which weve noticed is common in the lower NI, but as a business owner this doesnt bother us, you have the choice, and actually probably better as an option at payment, than built into the cost on everyone as otherwise has to happen. Overall highly recommended. Will be back when next in Taupo. Well done The Bistro.More
We had heard that The Bistro was very good when we first moved to Taupo and went for the first time on a Thursday night as it was my husbands birthday
It is an excellent eatery, They have got the formula just right, its a...small, intimate restaurant serving top class food and not at all pretentious. Our waiter Julio ensured we were well informed, and looked after us to make the evening most pleasurable.
We opted for the 3 course set menu which we thought was good value for such excellent food. For entree I had the slow cooked calamari which melted in the mouth, Hapuku mains which had such a delicate fusion of flavours and the creme caramel was stunning. Tom had the same but an excellent steak for mains.
Nice extra touches are the home made sourdough bread, and ceviche tasters before the meals and happy birthday written in chocolate on Tom's desert plate. Highly recommended for a nice night out. We will return.More
