As visitors, this restaurant was a bit difficult to locate. It's actually inside the International Hotel ! We were shown to the quiet part of the restaurant as there were 2 big tables near the front of the restaurant,. The waitresses were very friendly and efficient. We ordered the flambe beef and crepes for desserts (all done by our table, fascinating to watch our dinner cooked). The mains came with delicious vegetables as well. All and all an enjoyable evening with good food and service.

While I can't fault the food at all and at first, the service seemed to be immaculate which is unusual in NZ, it fell flat fast. Even though we didn't have a reservation, we got a table and they weren't all that busy. At least 1/3 full the whole time. When they didn't have a beer which was on the menu available and asked the waitress to come back as he perused the menu, she simply never did. We waited a good 15 minutes, not being able to catch anyone's attention. Every single wait person was tending to every other table it seemed, but ours. Punishment for not having a reservation maybe? He had to walk out, go to the bar to get the beer and come back. That's pretty unacceptable. He ordered the steak and they didn't even present him with a steak knife, instead having to cut it with a butter knife. Nobody came by to ask how things were or if we needed anything, just passed right by to tend to other tables. The staff seemed pretty frazzled over the few people that were there. I'd hate to see it on a busy night. For white tablecloth/napkin kind of place, I expect better service and not have 4 different people come to the table asking the same questions. Need to tighten up the ship a bit here in terms of service.

Well here I am back from hibernation, and this restaurant just needs to be included as one of the best that the Minister of War and I have dined at. Firstly the duck, walnut and pear salad, moist and full of flavour, just be careful of the rocket leaf stalks as they can get stuck in your throat. Next the Chateaubriand for 2, this was a 600 gram slab of prime Hawkes Bay beef which would have fed 4 people. But the treat was watching Tony a well experienced chef, cook it to perfection at your table. You really don’t need accompaniments to savour this dish but mashed potatoes are a good compliment. The only complaint was to much meat but that was solved by a takeaway container. Tony then followed up with crepes suzettes another wow factor here. Wine was a Barossa Cab/Sav which worked well with all dishes. I need to mention our table attendant who was from Greece, pleasant and professional.

We had a bit of a challenge making a reservation as neither the hotel or restaurant answered the phone after trying four times for a booking on the same day, we made one on line at 6:15 pm for an 8:00 pm booking, It wasn't in their system on arrival but was confirmed by email halfway through our "walk in" meal at 9:15 pm. We were glad we persisted as the food was good and in generous portions. The prawns flambeed with pernod and cream were perfectly cooked and the Steak Diane was tender and tasty. The vegetables acompanying the meal were generous and not really needed and were only luke warm. The Crepes Suzette were amazingly good. The flambe is a hark back to another era and introduced theatre to a great tasting meal. The flambe itself was expertly handled tableside. Our cocktail was average, the wine list was OK and the service was mixed with some staff appearing to be stressed. In all the food is why you go to a restaurant and it was really tasty. We would happily return and choose from the flambe options again, other tables were raving about the chteaubriand.

We were staying at the Plymouth so booked in for dinner at The Orangery. We couldn’t resist ordering the Chateaubriand for 2, which was cooked to perfection at our table by chef, Chelsea. The only issue we experienced was the restaurant appeared to be under-staffed that night which put a lot of pressure on the waiting staff but they coped very well.

An enjoyable meal and excellent service. The two of us were celebrating a 75th birthday and the extra surprise that came with dessert was a lovely touch and appreciated by both of us. Thank you so much for making our evening special. Will definitely be back.

We had an amazing meal here last night. The food that the 3 of us had was cooked to perfection and tasted divine. The service we received from the staff was attentive and friendly and they catered to our request of spacing out the courses so we could fit in a dessert. Would thoroughly recommend and will definitely be back.

We decided to go to The Orangery on our last night in New Plymouth. We booked and were the first diners on the mid-week night we went, due to our early start the next day to drive home. More diners arrived over the following hour. We both opted for the crayfish ravioli which was nice but we were disappointed that the ravioli was quite tough/very al dente and the meal was only just lukewarm. Our mains were the lamb rack, perfectly cooked and a generous serving with delicious seasonal vegetables and potato gratin. The other main was the Fish of the day which was snapper and pan fried, with seasonal vegetables and the potato gratin. The fish was fresh and delicious and a generous serving. We both felt the meals were only just warm enough for our liking which was our only complaint. We look forward to returning to try one of the flambe meals, which we admired with food envy being cooked at the table next to us. The staff were friendly and we were made to feel welcome.

I've been visiting New Plymouth every week for work in the past 2 years, but only this time I had the opportunity to have dinner here. Reservation was easy, I picked the main course only because it was on the top of the list, without knowing what flambe was. My food was cooked in front of me, which was an amazing experience for the first timer like me, and the steak was served sizzling hot. Quality was awesome and the service was superstar. Kudos to Chelsea & co. for giving a 5-star service. I had Rhubarb Creme Brulee, and again it was my 1st time eating rhubarb. For me, it was a bit too sweet, but still okay. I will surely come back and try the other dishes.

Darling and I in New Plymouth for a three day recharge. Went to Orangery off the back of their number one rating in TA. Restaurant attached to the Plymouth International Hotel although we were not staying there. Warm relaxed decor. Good number of staff considering it is not a huge place. Service friendly and attentive. We had breads to start. Garlic bread pure kiwiana, hot and dripping with salty buttery garlic goodness. I had flat bread with onion jam and feta. Amazing. For mains darling had pan fried Dory which was a very generous serve and she enjoyed it very much. Came with tiny spider beans which were deliciously sweet and a good plateful of veggies in cheese sauce. I had prawn tails cooked at the table. Great cruise ship style theatre. Prawns cooked just right and creamy sauce amazing. Crepe suzettes for dessert, again finished at the table. Three courses and a couple of wines for $160 for two. Would go back in a heartbeat. Note that menu is not the same as in hotel website. Great to see menus changing but might be a good idea to have resident technician update this for the preview bunnies amongst us. Note: not open Sundays 👍❤️

We had a faultless meal here. Attended by Denise who was a treasure, great knowledge and information. On ordering, our meals came quickly and four guests all had a delicious meal. My own meal was an entree of crayfish ravioli and a main of flambe prawns, the prawns in particular were a stand out. We would all have happily returned for another meal but we had limited time and other recommended restaurants to eat at. This was my number one and i thoroughly give my recommendation to it. Thank you for a lovely meal Orangery !

Last minute family dinner. Easy to book and reservation managed superbly. Awesome service and lovely ambiance. We ordered a range of dishes. Small plates, the salmon and the duck terrine, were delicious. The snapper main was excellent and introduced us to sea asparagus. The flambe steak Diane was superb, lovely and tender and a very polished performance by the flambe chef. As was the crepe suzzette. The creme Brule with rhubarb and the lemon drizzle cake were also delicious, and the kids menu was perfect for our 9yr old. Best show in town. Highly recommend

We order cocktails that took a while to come, not a problem as we had all evening. We were asked 4 times if we wanted to order. We said we would like to enjoy our cocktails first then order. Starters- cured salmon very good. Mains, I had the short ribs, I have never seen so much fat. Also the fat next to the meat was solid, the meat was tender but not hot enough. The rest of the dish was fine. Great that potatoes and veg are included in the price. Veg nothing special, but ok. Filet was very good, I wish I had ordered that. However it came with a red onion tart that was cold, I am sure it should have been hot. Wine a reasonable price. One review said their eyes watered at the price of the dinner. We thought it was reasonable value for money. Crepes at the table were great. It’s a corporate setting located in a hotel. When we mentioned the substandard ribs and tart, we were instantly offered a glass of wine each. Great customer service.

My 2 siblings and our partners went to the orangey for dinner. 6 of us. We have been before and knew the food was nice. The service and atmosphere was top notch. 3 of us ordered steak Diane which was absolutely delicious. One ordered the chicken breast and one ordered the pork belly. All our meals were very tasty. The downfall was the amount of veges we were provided and the person who has the pork belly, had a miniscule amount of mashed potato on his plate. For 6 adults we were supplied with one small dish of broccoli, cauliflower and carrots. Our person with the pork belly asked for some more mashed potato and was told that sorry the chef said no there wasn't enough left!!!! The rest of us gave him some from our plates as we def had way more than he did!!! Very disappointing for a fairly expensive restaurant. Probably wud be hesitant to recommend the orangey to anyone now.

We dined at the Orangery Restaurant and had a magnificent meal. Our 48 years of marriage splash. The staff were polite and friendly. Our starter was the gluten free garlic pizza bread and it was nice and light with our table wine. The main was chateaubriand for two. The fillet steak was cooked to perfection and was so tender to eat The vegables were cooked perfectly and we enjoyed them with our steak. I have never eaten pumpkin in my 73 years on earth because my Aunty forced me to eat it and I dry reached and was send to bed without dessert. For all those years, pumpkin was never on my plate after that incident and I blamed my Aunty Mary who tried to force me to eat it. After tonight, I will be eating pumpkin. We did not have dessert because we were so full. What a fantastic experience we had at the Orangery Restaurant. Thankyou Don Openshaw
