On Marine parade in Napier I stumbled across this fantastic restaurant. The service was lovely and they were happy to explain what the dishes were. I opted for the mixed rijsttafel for one and Indonesian tea. There are complimentary onion crackers (think prawn crackers) with some delicious relishes and sweet soy sauce ( all of which you can buy to take home). My meal consisted of mung bean soup with spinach followed by a plate with 17 different dishes in taster portions plus a plate of satay vegetables. The tea was a good choice of drink as it was sweet and cooled down the spicy prawns. The complementary dessert was an unusual green drink with little seeds in top. Can’t recommend the restaurant and my meal highly enough.

After a long day work at 9 pm we were so hungry and we went to this little Indonesian Restaurant, but the kitchen was already closed, so we actually knocked on their kitchen and this friendly chap came out and told us to sit down and he will find us a something to eat. The food was absolutely delicious, started with green bean soup followed by nasi rendang with all of the condiments. Their demeanour was faultless, their service was fantastic and their food was cooked to perfection.

We were pleasantly to find such a great Indonesian restaurant in Napier. We have gone to numerous such places in the Netherlands and our gold standard has always been the ristaffel a large collection of small dishes accompanied by steamed rice. I would say that the ristaffel at Restaurant Indonesia was among the best we have tried and the enthusiastic welcome given by our hostess was a highlight.

We are on a budget because of the current Covid situation (job loses and so on) and thought we would finally go out for dinner for the first time in many months since we were finally able to save a bit. There was one item on the menu that was samples on the menu for 2 people for $42 and this was explained to us by the waitress that it was a sample menu for 2 people for the $42. It was delicious and we were very happy with the meal. When we went to pay we found out it is $42 per person instead of $42 total. Very unexpected and super deceiving. Had we known it was per person, we would have ordered something else much cheaper. If it wasn't for the pricing, it would have been a 4 or 5 star but unfortunately the VERY deceiving way this happened garnered it a 1 star. Just be warned ahead of time. They should either put on the menu that it is per person or find a different way to explain at the time of ordering.
I never use trip advisor to review companies, but was asked to write a review as we left the restaurant.

Because of this, I am happy to refund you half of the amount you have paid or give you a voucher for the same value. Our menu was written quite clear that the picture was a Rijsttafel Supreme for two people, while the list and prices are for one person. I am very glad that you enjoyed the meals and had a great culinary adventure, really hope that your situation will improve and that we get the pleasure of serving you again in the near future. We visited on Saturday night & restaurant was busy. Staff were friendly & helpful, but food was quite disappointing. We didn’t order banquet, just individual meals - perhaps that was our mistake. My brother ordered a Indonesian fried chicken dish & got 3 small fried chicken drumsticks, a mound of rice & one piece of lettuce with half a tomato - no sauce, that was $25. I ordered a lemongrass chicken dish which came in a small ramekin, the hero in the dish being the rice! Again with 1 lettuce leaf with 3 tiny chopped up bits of cucumber. The food tasted ok but it wasn’t a satisfying meal. So tried a dessert - got half (really!) a fried banana with a small scoop of ice cream. We won’t be returning as left disappointed.

We enjoyed a rijastel indonesian banquet meal which comprises a large number of small dishes to sample. My daughter is vegan and particularly enjoyed the gado-gado and corn fritters. Most of the other vegan dishes are tofu. My husband enjoyed everything especially the beef rendang. The banquet was a good introduction to Indonesian food but it was a lot more expensive than an indian banquet per person.

My friend and I booked the 18 sample dishes representing the different areas of Indonesia. This is more of an experience rather than a meal. Great to taste all the different dishes. Some were scrummy, some not so much, but it’s all down to taste. We enjoyed our meal and was totally stuffed , couldn’t finish it all. Would recommend you try it. The restaurant was very busy when many others were empty on Marine Parade

It's been three years since we visited Restaurant Indonesia and we again enjoyed this visit.
We both had the vegan rIjsttafel and found the dishes tasty with interesting flavours. We had a warm welcome and the wait staff were friendly and efficient.
Our only quibble was that we thought the servings were on the small size. We only had one satay tempeh skewer each for example, and the same for the battered fritters. We aren't big eaters but we thought rather than food for two we got food for 1-1/2 people.

We are from Auckland and did not expect to find such a good Indonesian restaurant in Napier. The food served was as authentic as the meals we have had in Indonesia. The Rijsttafel on the menu allows you to sample small portions of different dishes from the various provinces of Indonesia. We had the Meat Rijsttafel and that was excellent - there are options for Fish or Vegetarian Rijsttafel. What a great idea to have the chilli sambal available on the table at 3 different spice levels - allowed us to make it our food as spicy as we like it!
My wife and I had the Bebur Ketan Hitam (with really thick coconut cream) and the Bolu Pandan cake for dessert. Both were excellent as was the service throughout the meal. Thank you and well done, we recommend this restaurant to anyone who loves good Indonesian food. We will surely want to come back again next time we are in Napier.

My husband and I were so happy with Restaurant Indonesia! It's cute and cozy and well decorated and the staff were super friendly and helpful.
We are vegan so were really happy to find multiple vegan options on the menu. I ordered the vegan rijsttafel (12 mini dishes in one) and it was delicious, so much flavor and fun trying all of them.
They also make their own soy sauce and Chilli sauces which are on the table for you to help yourselves to which I thought was a nice additional touch, plus they were really tasty!
We will definitely be back when we next visit Napier!

Wow , what an amazing experience! My husband and I were greeted so warmly as soon as we stepped in the door , there was beautiful decor and knowledgeable, friendly staff who made the dining experience fantastic. The food is truly authentic and couldn’t be faulted! I don’t write reviews often unless I come across a place that is absolutely outstanding, and our dining experience was exactly that. Thank you!

Went with my partner and we had the meat banquet, $32 per person. We started with complementary Crackers and chilli sauce. Our banquet included a tasty soup, six dishes (4meat, 2 vege), 5 condiments and rice. The dishes looked small, but we were very full when we finished. The array of tastes were incredible, I highly recommend the banquet. We finished with a complimentary shot glass seed dessert, looked unusual but tasted great. You could feel the love and attention put into this family owned authentic business.

The owner took my reservation, checked on us throughout our meal and greeted us when we left. She was so kind and enthusiastic.
The server was also helpful, as they were out of the wine that we selected. She assisted us to choose another and advised us on our dinner choices.
The food was excellent. Plenty for take away for lunch the next day, too. The food was flavourful and a nice variety. I bought some tasty hot sauce Sambaal Ooelek for home, as it was so spicy and delicious. Overall, the meal was superb and I look forward to going back!

There are plenty of great places to dine in in Napier. This restaurant is very unique and quite unlike anything you'd get in this area. Service is impeccable - polite, friendly and generous. The food was absolutely delicious. Good amount of spice if you want it, great selection and generous amounts. The restaurant is decorated in traditional Indonesian decorations. The place mats had short explanations on the food and culture - the small things make the experience so enjoyable. Highly recommend it to anyone visiting Napier.

After a cold damp day in the Hawkes Bay, this restaurant provided the perfect pick me up. I have eaten here before, so i had some idea about the food choices. This time i was with a friend andwe shared the rijstafel supreme, which came with 18 dishes - a real taste of Indonesia. A great mix of hot and cold, spicy and not so spicy - iwould highly recommend the food to everyone.
The staff were very friendly and welcoming.
Overall, a great experience - wish this restaurant was closer to home!
