Last week we attended a birthday gathering for our friend at the Thai Lotus in Taradale. The food was not only delicious but good size portions for the money. The service was warm and welcoming and nothing was to much trouble. We will certainly be doing repeat visit. Thank you all for making our evening very enjoyable. :)

A group of us went but I will only detail what my wife and I had. I believe that the others were generally happy but we were disappointed. This has been a regular restaurant for us for 15 years (I can't really remember when it opened) but in the future we will try some other places. Ultimately we will return I imagine. The atmosphere was good. The staff were friendly and the menu quite extensive (see their web page). My wife ordered the fresh spring rolls. These seemed to be rather clumsily made and fell apart as she tried to eat them. This is a favourite of hers at Thai restaurants but that night they were not up to standard. My Coco Prawns were fine but struck me as standard packet type fare that one might find in the freezer of an Asian food store. For the mains my wide had Pad Ginger chicken. This is one of her favourites to when in a Thai restaurant. The chicken was fine but the dish lacked ginger impact and the featured black mushrooms were few and far between. She was disappointed. I had Pad Thai for a main. OK it is a noodle dish but really I expected more "other content" . I expected rather better and more than five modest slices of relative thin but tough beef. The bean sprouts were barely adequate and I didn't take particular note of the spring onion. It was the tough beef and this dish in general for it was totally dominated by a large mound of noodles. The others in the party seemed generally happy.

The food here is very tasty. It is also very spicy for anything more than medium, but I like that. They are however a bit miserable with the protein, for example a prawn main had a total of four prawns in it! The other thing stopping it from a top rating is the price. We order takeaways online and by the time you add the rice (not included with mains that need it) and then GST and then some service fee for heaven knows what, it becomes quite expensive.

As a local it saddens me to leave this review but being locals we have dined here on several occasions (none of which down to our choice) and never had a good meal, average yes, good no. This time however we had heard it was a new owner and being invited again we accepted and boy was it embarrassing. We arrived at 6:30pm and left at 9:00pm and only got two courses! Starters were okay but then the main course arrived. Two of which were wrong. My partner was happy to try the random dish but I did complain that I had ordered the whole fish, to be told, 'yeah we didn't have it so it's pieces instead' and our waitress left. At no point did anyone come back up to the table again which was a shame as our plates were clearly full. When the owner herself finally came to the table to clear we explained that two dishes were wrong and that a whole fish is a lot different from small fish nuggets floating in a sauce. The other wrong dish was overcooked beef and even our friends that invited us ordered the duck and it was also inedible. To add insult to injury as we went to pay the bill we asked why after the complaint no one had come to the table to see if anyone would like a drink or dessert. To which I was told she had spoken to her waitress that had informed her she'd told us that there was no whole fish. Again may I add, not on ordering but on serving a bad replacement dish! Sadly this restaurant has not gotten any better and we will definitely not be returning again. It's had way too many chances already.

Thought I had found a good Thai Restaurant and its not bad, but the evening meal was only average. The Satay Sauce tasted like it came from a bottle, it was thick and glutinous, certainly didn't taste fresh. The curry was okay but there 's this similar flavour that is in the curries and an uncomfortable feeling in the stomach after it. Not enough seasoning, quite bland. The staff are normally very nice, but I had an issue with the wine and it was dealt with badly. The wine at $9 and $10 per glass should be good and it is very low standard, not worth buying and the Manageress has low level skills in hospitality. Looking at reviews it seems this is quite common, she doesn't handle negative feedback well. Having been in hospitality, one needs to understand that complaints do happen and it's better to actually deal with them well nicely and or you loose customers and they tell other people not to go.

Having been to this local over the years and had wonderful food and service, we took our friends there as heard it had changed owners. Sadly, we won't be back again. When we did finally get our entrees after 45 minutes, the child's meal was a frozen slab of supermarket fish which smelt which he could not eat. After over 1.5 hrs of waiting for our main and asking the waitresses, both told us the kitchen was very busy with takeaway orders so we will have to wait. When we finally had enough and got up to pay for the little we had eaten, the counter had 15 takeaway orders waiting to be cooked prior to seated guests who had been there for ages and who had made an effort to come out and support local restauranteurs. Absolutely disgraceful and when Napier has such vibrant restaurants, who needs to patronise one who has decided that takeaways are more important than seated guests.

Have visited this restaurant many times before. This time around the waitress made it seem like it would be more excellent service. The first sign of failure came when only 2 of 3 entrees arrived. Then, after at least an hour no water arrived at the table. Then after 2 hours no food had arrived with no apologies, no table service. If you are available to accept bookings do not use being busy as an excuse for poor service. There were empty tables and we watched people arrive after us and be served before us. Words cannot express my disappointment. The Thai Lotus has been an institution to me for almost 20 years but this experience means I'm not likely to return.

We live local and have dined at Thai Lotus about x3 times in the past x4 years. At first our meals seemed nice and the food was alot tastier than how it is now. The food tasted like how real Thai food should. The second was disappointing where I asked for the meal to be replaced, it had tough chewy pork and was not nice. My husbands meal was very over-cooked and tasted like the sauce came from a supermarket bottle . We gave this place one more try x3 weeks ago and Alas!!...still disappointing so we won't be going back. We've tried out the (Wok) in Taradale and Wow!! Very tasty and it's now our eating place and for takeouts. So lovely to see all the waitresses welcoming and pleasant to us, so attentive. Best in Taradale. So Bye bye Thai Lotus..

Good service, ambiance is reasonable, food terrible. Open a can of Wattie's Thai in a minute and that's what you get. Mixed entries were out of a packet. This place is a joke. Who ever rates this restaurant has never eaten real Thai food. Street food in Thailand for $2.00 is 10 times better than the processed crap this place serves up. Noddle canteen is twice as good for a quarter of the price. Don't bother.

You know when you decide to make Thai food at home. You fill it with big chunks of kiwi veg, leftover tough meat and a bit of spice from a jar? Well I suspect it would taste nicer than here! So disappointing. Lacking that fresh Thai taste you want, the chicken was tough; Pad Thai tasteless and Roti average but the peanut sauce was awful. I honestly doubt the kitchen staff have even been to Thailand!! My advice....eat Indian. Taradale has a couple of nice Indian restaurants.

Had a few bad meals here months ago. Thought I’d give it another try. It was extremely disappointing. Zero effort put into the dishes. Very over priced. My sizzling pork was not sizzling at all. Meal was mostly onion swimming in a very sweet sauce. My guest agreed it was terrible. Won’t be going back. Not the same place it used to be

As Napier locals me and my partner have eaten at most thai places all round Hawkes Bay. We wanted uber eats and the thai lotus was the only thai on there so we gave it a try. both the entrees and mains were nothing short of just average. My partners crispy pork was dry and hard with no crisp at all, she couldn't even eat it in the end. very disappointed with this place and will not be going back.

Nice restaurant with friendly service. The appetisers were nice, but the green curry with tiger prawns was extremely average tasting, no spice whatsoever. The prawns themselves were really good though. Good portion sizes too. My friends who had the duck really raved about it.

Outstanding food quality and flavours were incredible. The Panang curry is to die for, and the crispy duck is a signature dish not to be missed. Our waitress was friendly, quick and made us feel like we weren’t rushed- really happy with the calibre of staff here.
