My partner and I arrived to a very warm welcome. The staff although very busy made us feel quite relaxed. Our entree’s arrived, squid for me and seafood chowder for my lovely lady. Both were fantastic. The chowder was especially nice..... delicate yet not bland. Our mains consisted of the seafood extravaganza and the large T-bone steak with veg. Generous proportions and all cooked to perfection. The whitebait fritter on the seafood plate was so nice we returned the next day for lunch just to order them!.. Friendly staff a relaxed atmosphere in a great location always helps the experience of dining out, and the whale has it in abundance. There is also an option of dining upstairs for a little more intimacy with views over the harbor for those wanting it. All in all highly recommend the Thirsty Whale.

This was a quiet birthday dinner and well received. We shared some garlic pizza bread to start but neither of us could eat all of our main dish as the serving was huge. A doggy bag was provided for the surplus fish which we ate at home the following evening. Three huge pieces of snapper alongside a salad and chips was terrific value for just over $20. One had battered fish and the other had crumbled fish- it was good to have the choice. Service was good and well paced between courses. Pleasant atmosphere and the gas fire was welcome on a chilly autumn evening.

On Saturday the 14th of December the Fruitfed Supplies Social Club and Friends had the pleasure of attending our annual social Christmas Dinner – this year at the Thirsty Whale in Ahuriri. We had booked in for one of the wonderful Christmas themed set menus offered for the festive season and on our arrival were greeted with an absolutely outstanding and unexpected table setting for our party. Our table was situated upstairs in the exquisite glass mezzanine overlooking both the restaurant and the beautiful Ahuriri docks. Our table and chairs were adorned with festive ribbons and a Christmas garland centrepiece, inclusive of Christmas crackers for all who attended. The staff and service was beyond exceptional. Both the evening manager and the young waitress that served our table for the evening were extremely accommodating and approachable and not a thing was too much to ask. Our orders were taken promptly and we were well attended to for drinks throughout the evening. The food was to die for. An excellent selection of dishes to choose from for our entrée, mains, and dessert and our three courses came to the table at great intervals. The pork belly entrée was a hit amongst the group followed by mains with both the beef and the chicken dishes making up the tables’ choices. Both dishes easily being able to be eaten with a butter knife the meat was so well cooked and the vegetable accompaniments fresh and full of flavour. To round out the night were wonderfully themed Christmas desserts inclusive of a warming steamed pudding or the classic Kiwi pavlova. Before heading home, staff invited us to stay upstairs in the mezzanine for as long as we liked as the restaurant was being prepared for the night club portion of their evening which was a lovely surprise. All late diners were welcome to this and it was an offer was well received by our group despite having hit our peak for the evening. The Fruitfed team left the Thirsty Whale exceptionally full and well-watered and have been raving about the evening since! A big thank you again to the team at the Thirsty Whale for making our night!

Me and my partner came for dinner at Thirsty Whale, after an excellent lunch the birthday last year. This time we brought Miss 6. Staff were friendly and attentive, being helpful for dinning with little people. Service was smooth. An activity colouring sheet was available instantaneously. The kids meal arrived shortly after. The $14 waffles were a little plain they arrived with cream ontop and a bowl of maple syrup. There was no berries/coulis or icing sugar. Very plain. They could have some pricing options. Cream no cream Berries extra etc. I enjoyed my vegetarian burger $19 w fries.Burgers came w a skewer holding everything together. My partner found his chargrilled chicken burger more like a stack. Difficult to eat without dissembling. Raw red onion was super chunky with segments 1.5cm thick no separate rings just thick onion. Partner prefers onions cooked a little in a burger. Just under $90 for 3 drinks incl.

We were booked into the Thirsty Whale for approximately 30 people. We were set up in the Harpoon Room which has its own bar and balcony for your privacy. Entering the staff had set up our tables with the Christmas feel and it looked absolutely amazing. We had a set $60 menu which had 3 choices of an entree, main and dessert. I ordered the pork belly, salmon filo and steamed pudding with custard. The first 2 dishes were to die for and I highly recommend anyone to try the first 2. Pork belly was cooked so it had a crisp outer and soft chew on the inside. Needless to say I wanted more so definitely needs to be a main. 2nd course (see pictures) Salmon filo with caramelized onion, a variety of different veges with fennel seeds and what I would describe as a lemon cream on the bottom. The flavors worked so well and the portion size was very very big i could only eat half of it. Again highly recommend this choice for main if you visit Napier. The final course looked very sad a disappointing. I am so used to eating a lot of steam pudding on the marae, so I ate half of my main to ensure I could fit this in. When it came out it looked like a cold chocolate brownie slab with custard that had been waiting under lamps for a very long time. It came out cold. I was hoping that the look of it would not hinder the dessert itself as a steam pudding but the whole dish was absolutely disgusting. Needless to say from the 7 out of 30 who ordered this dish 4 of them only had a spoonful of it and pushed aside the others just simply could not finish it. A disappointing end to a great evening. DONT ever order the steam pudding if you are Polynesian!! The taste is like a hard cold Christmas cake slab. Not like a steam pudding at all. Other than that our bar girls/waitresses were absolutely amazing and patient. So thanks Thirsty Whale a good 2 out of 3 for food and a 10 out of 10 for venue and service!! 👍👍

A Saturday night away in Napier, we chose this restaurant online after browsing restaurant menus and reading reviews, my husband was sold straight away with the seafood extravaganza. The only reservation available online was 9.30pm, so we opted for that and went to a bar first. Upon arriving at 9.30pm we noticed alot of spare tables and were told the kitchen had closed, we explained about our reservation so they asked the kitchen to reopen, which was embarrassing. They seated us upstairs as the restaurant transforms into a nightclub later in the evening. My husband ordered the seafood extravaganza and I had the fish of the day. They were both good, however not very hot, my husband observed the meals plated and waiting under headlamps for 15 minutes before being delivered to our table, after mentioning this upon paying, our drinks were deducted from the bill. While we were eating bar staff rearranged tables around us and the downstairs area hit off into nightclub mode. I would recommend just walking in earlier in the evening for dinner instead of reserving a table, there are alot of restaurants along the road to choose from.

Thank you for choosing the Thirsty Whale. Sorry for the delay in the response, but we were looking at this matter very seriously. We have gone back and reviewed the camera footage from the time the meal left the kitchen to your table and the wait time was 3 minutes (which we do think is a long time in our standards), not the 15 minutes you mentioned. We are happy for you to come in and view the footage. The Maitre D that seated you did not tell you the kitchen was closed, but asked you if we could take your order as soon as possible as our kitchen was about to close. We noticed that you left our restaurant and tried the restaurant next door, which obviously couldn't seat you at this time at night. We apologise we were fully booked and couldn't seat you any earlier, and just to avoid the changeover we seated you upstairs with a window view over the harbour. We are pleased you enjoyed the food and hope you give us another chance.

Thought we’d try this restaurant on a trip into Napier, the estuary view being our main criteria to choose here, rather than than the city. The staff were ok, not over friendly, but ok, and we were seated very quickly. It’s a very modern type of restaurant, but again ok. I ordered a venison burger, my wife the chowder, which I have to say neither were very good, my burger was tasteless and not very warm, over smothered in sauces and relish, and my wife’s chowder was missing much fish, so all in all a pretty rubbish meal. We did complain to the manager, who gratefully removed my wife’s meal, and our drinks from the bill, and said he would talk to the kitchen about the food. So we really couldn’t recommend this restaurant on our experience, but maybe we were just unlucky.

Has an early dinner and sat outside at this quayside restaurant a short distance out of the centre of town in the port area. My wife and I both had fish dishes. I had classic fish and chips and she had the Seafood Extravaganza. Despite the fact that we skipped the entrees the food was freshly cooked and delivered to the table in quick time probably because we were there relatively early 6.30pm. The batter on the classic fish was cooked to perfection and delicious and the chips were crispy dry. The extravaganza was just that and substantial (see photo) which I benefitted from when she couldn’t eat it all!! I had a glass of red and my wife a zero beer. Total bill NZ$92. Our waitress was very sweet and totally attentive. Would confidently recommend with the caveat that speed of service could deteriorate later in the evening as the restaurant get rather more busy.

Over priced disappointing food, with little imagination or flair. Pork belly was rolled and very average supposed to be served with mash and spinach, mash was ok but the spinach all six leaves a joke. Dessert was sent back under cooked and cold, second dessert again disappointing. Would I come back again, definitely not. There a re a lot better restaurants on offering Napier.

Sheree and Brittany did an absolutely fantastic job of looking after our party of 12 tonight. The table was beautifully decorated, they were so kind and attentive, Brittany certainly made sure no one was thirsty and nobody went hungry that's for sure, with well sized and delicious meals. I just couldn't be more pleased with how our post elopement meal was. It was intimate and beautiful and I am so grateful too these two and of course the wonderful people who made our meals. Thanks so much.

Whilst on holiday we had an excellent meal at The thirsty Whaler with 2 adults 2 kids. Menu was extensive but each meal was excellent. Kids portions were great for our 9 and 11 year olds and kitchen was more than happy to pimp the hamburgers with lettuce. Wait staff were very efficient and friendly. Would definitely recommend.

Diddn't start off so well when our drinks we ordered arrived at the table tasting weird/flat & we think, not exactly what we ordered. We let the waitress know & it was fixed up asap & we got nice fizzy drinks. Food was really nice & (I feel) worth what we paid even though it took quite a while to get to our table as they were really busy. Look forward to coming back & eating here again sometime soon

Arrived in Napier right on lunch time for a weekend away for hubby's birthday. The sun was shining so we chose to sit outside and enjoy it and the lovely view. Service was great - very friendly and welcoming. Amazing value meals ! My steak (200g steak, chips, salad deal for $17.90) was just incredible ... fat and juicy, cooked just as I asked with a delicious creamy peppercorn sauce ... what a deal. Wish I lived here as would visit often. Hubby enjoyed his generous serving of fish and chips and we both enjoyed trying some of the local wine. Definitely recommend this place.

A steady if not packed night in the winter school holidays. Service was quick and attentive but food was 2/5 at best. So underwhelming I barely have words for it. Wife had a scallop dish that was cold and uninspiring. Kids meals were average and if I’d cooked myself a steak at home as poor I’d have taken myself outside and given myself a reprimand. At best a $15 steak but at $35 it should be much, much better. With a prime spot in the harbour guessing repeat trade isn’t necessary particularly in prime tourist season but I wouldn’t return if you paid me.
