I took some colleagues here for dinner. My first time visiting Napier and this restaurant. Well worth it. The staff were very attentive, the food was superb and the decor was very unique. We sat by a roaring fire which was fantastic on a cool...night.More

17 yo behind bar, she informed me her age when I asked for a dry cider 🧐. Seafood chowder served with white bread toast. Was beige with very little seafood. Less than impressed. Too many great restaurants in area to tolerate less than average. Do...not recommendMore

The staff are top notch here, and that became apparent right from the get go when my wife and i walked in hoping for a table for two without previously booking ahead. We thought we'd celebrate both a b'day and also the demise of that...ridiculous scanning in rubbish. What a refreshing feeling of walking into a place where you're not hounded to show your pointless jab papers or mask exemption. We were shown to our table with a nice view of the sun setting and soon had some drinks on the table. Our food orders were taken soon after and before too long we were digging in. The hapuka and lamb shanks were cooked perfectly and tasted great, so a big ups to the chef/s who had a busy night! Thought it would be rude if we didn't get dessert, so we did, and the awesome staff (two young ladies working on the night of the 11th) organised a little something for the b'day girl which was much appreciated. Not much more to say other than we would come here again next time we are in Napier. Free parking in front of and beside the restaurant.More

We loved our meals at this restaurant for News Year's Eve. Our waiter (Jack) was very attentive and made us feel relaxed and took our orders with a smile. He was cheerful and waited on us with ease. Glad this young lad served us, because...of (Jack) we will go back again soon.More

I took my wife and daughter her for lunch while on a short break away from home over Wellington Anniversary Weekend. As my daughter is in a wheelchair access to any venue is always a consideration plus volume of patrons on the day can some...some frustrations and anxiety. On entering this venue the Duty Manager made us so welcome and was considerate of our needs. Once we found a suitable place to sit we were given every consideration possible. At no time did we feel rushed to make a quick selection of our meal and the recommendations offered on what meals we may like were appreciated. We thoroughly enjoyed the experience of eating at this venue. While neighboring restaurant venues were bulging with patrons I can not anticipate what would make their service and meal quality any more special than the Speights Ale House. Thank You for making our lunch a special experience.More

We celebrated the Mrs' birthday and it was an ok evening that should have been better. There were 4 of us and we enjoyed the beef burger, bangers and mash, blue cod and a steak. All the food was good quality and good-sized portions. Maybe...the best burger I've had in Napier too - that deserves a special mention. The setting is nice with views from upstairs out over the water. The staff were friendly. The food was good. But…..the night was let down by a mix up with our food. My Mrs (whose birthday we were celebrating) ordered one of the signature dishes, the Southern Man Scotch Fillet. What she received was the wrong item. There are two Scotch fillet steaks on the menu and what came was the other Scotch fillet, not the item she ordered. She ordered well done and the steak was cooked medium. I guess her steak was mixed up with another order. So what do you do? My Mrs likes her steak well done. Had we pointed out that she had been served the wrong item, it would have been at least 15 – 20 minutes for a new steak (the steaks are 300 grams, thick and to cook such a piece of meat well done and let it rest takes 15 minutes at an absolute minimum, if not quite a bit longer). By the time the new dish had been served the rest of us would have finished our meals while the birthday lady would have been left to eat hers after the rest of us had finished ours. A minute or two after bringing the steak to our table the waitress came over to apologise and acknowledged that it was the wrong dish. She did this without us saying anything so she realised a mistake had been made. She offered to take it back and replace it. That, however, would meant a long wait. 3 people would have waited to eat with the birthday lady and their food would have got cold food, or the birthday lady would eat alone after everyone else had finished theirs. It was a real disappointment and while I won’t say it ruined the night, it made what should have been a special night much less enjoyable. So my summary of Speights Ale House is similar to other bar & restaurants along that strip – good food but let down by disappointing service.More

We had 2 meals at Speights and couldn’t fault it. The position upstairs and overlooking the water was great - the staff were efficient, friendly and attentive and the food was well cooked and tasty. A more varied menu than just standard pub food is...offered and there was a lot of choice for coeiliacs which I appreciated.More

Hi, I don’t work there I just did a review but I believe weekend booking is essential as they’re quite popular. Hope that’s helpful.
