Tripadvisor’s approach to reviews
Before posting, each Tripadvisor review goes through an automated tracking system, which collects information, answering the following questions: how, what, where and when. If the system detects something that potentially contradicts our community guidelines, the review is not published.
When the system detects a problem, a review may be automatically rejected, sent to the reviewer for validation, or manually reviewed by our team of content specialists, who work 24/7 to maintain the quality of the reviews on our site.
Our team checks each review posted on the site disputed by our community as not meeting our community guidelines.

Ordered my fillet steak medium ,I also ordered a drink.Restaurant was @ 50 % not full by any means. After 40 mins I called over a waitress asking why the long wait. She checked said it would only be a short time. People who had arrived...and ordered after me already had their main course . Another ten minutes passed ,I was about to leave in disgust ,when the meal finally arrived. Small portion of potato and vegetables were on the plate. Steak was good nicely cooked. At no time did they apologise for the delay, not did they ask if I would like another drink, desert,or even coffee. Three young amateurs who appear to be arrogant,no interest in customer service. My experience on the night ref the restaurant was not enjoyable at all.More

We are from Tauranga and just Googled good places to eat in Gisborne. USSCO was in the top 10 and we had passed it earlier in the day so knew we could walk there and back as we were staying in Childers Road. Good welcome...and prompt service, water, menus and drinks order taken. So far, so good. We shared the chicken liver pate as a starter and it was okay - not awful but not stand-out. He had the snapper ravioli for main and I had the eye fillet. Here’s where it gets great. His snapper ravioli was amazing - you could actually taste the snapper, and the pasta was silky smooth. Whatever the sauce was, it was creamy and next level good. My steak was a totally perfect medium - that is such a rarity that I commented on it to the waitress. I order medium because it usually comes medium rare but this was perfectly cooked, melt-in-the-mouth tender and also beautifully crispy on the outside. What a delight and it completely put dessert off the menu. We were too full! Fantastic meal and good value for money.More

We ate here, staying just round the corner, so very convenient, just a short walk from our motel. The service was impeccable. From the first moment, we were very well looked after. If I had any comment to make about the food it was the...meals were too generous! I ordered 2 entrees and found they were just a bit too much! The food was delicious and well presented, service great, so definitely a must go if you are in Gisborne.More

Nice off the Main Street eatery. Food was very nice and tasty. Cost above the average cafe. Coffee was good. Staff attentive and pleasant.

This was a let down from start to finish; entertaining out of town friends for dinner we felt embarrased in this restaurants effort. Service was below par with only 5/6 drinks delivered - we went to the bar to retrieve the 6th.The vege starter was...extremely sub standard - a microwaved 1/2 pumpkin with a scoop of undercooked boiled rice does in NO shape or form equate to a pumpkin risotto! however the pork pancake was good. The steak main was overly seared to the point that the meat had an overpowering burnt taste and was very undersized for the price ; the Pork Belly was the saving grace. The service was generally abysmal with repeated waitress visits needed to confirm steak cooking preferences ! All-in-all a shambolic night ruined by sloppy service and below standard food. We will not be returning.More

Very disappointed in the food. Two dishes were average and the other two which was the pork was very poor. Overcooked, outer coating not crispy and meat very dry, not enough food compared to the large amount of sauce. Very expensive for substandard food.

Nice place, but a few tweaks would make it much better. Beef fillet a little chewy, vietnamese a little burnt round the edges. And no local red wine.

We've been to USSCo Bar & Bistro many times since it opened in 2005. It has lovely food and the staff are always attentive. We take our visitors there when we want something a bit special. However, there's not a lot on the menu for...vegans. In fact for the last maybe 10 years the only vegan main on the menu has been a pancake. It's a very delicious pancake, but you'd think in all this time the menu would have changed. There's a vegan dessert too, and the sides can all be made vegan, so there are choices. I just wish the chefs would offer something different. When we went there recently, four of our group were vegan. Plant-based eating is the fastest growing trend in the world. C'mon USSCo - get with it please.More

I am a woman travelling for business and have to dine on my own which I do all the time and is not a problem at all. The young female manager chose to allocate me a couch with a very low table despite lots of...empty tables. I asked several times if I could use a table but she stuck with her decision. Very awkward and uncomfortable to eat like that. The food is truly amazing but the manager clearly has no idea about customer service.More

The food was amazing! All 6 of our meals were 10/10! The building is beautiful. The service was great. Wish I lived closer than 3.5 hours away but will return here again for sure!

Attentive staff with excellent local wine knowledge, great cocktail selection, complimentary snack unexpected and delicious! The food was beautifully presented with such care and was above our expectation (we are very fussy eaters!)

We arrived to meet friends for a drink before dinner at 4.30pm, the advertised time of opening- on the website, on the door and on the wall. The young woman in charge told us we could not sit down and they were not open. When...we asked about the times advertised, she said it wasn't her problem. So we went elsewhere- never got to try the food or even get a drink with friends or even the suggestion we come back later. We all have bad days, a small amount of hospitality and basic manners go a long way.More

Same than portofino, was expecting a higher standard. Was good but not exceptional. The complimentary snack when we arrived was what tasted the best! Cheesecake was delicious, but for 15$ it had to be!
