Tripadvisor’s approach to reviews
Before posting, each Tripadvisor review goes through an automated tracking system, which collects information, answering the following questions: how, what, where and when. If the system detects something that potentially contradicts our community guidelines, the review is not published.
When the system detects a problem, a review may be automatically rejected, sent to the reviewer for validation, or manually reviewed by our team of content specialists, who work 24/7 to maintain the quality of the reviews on our site.
Our team checks each review posted on the site disputed by our community as not meeting our community guidelines.

Found this place by accident, great Hangi, seafood chowder, mac’n’cheese, Ambrosia, Steam Pudding and Fry Bread. Friendly service - happy to give you a coffee with the fry bread and lashings of butter. Reasonably priced and great for family.

We were looking for something for dinner and came across this place. First night we purchased their seafood chowder with fry bread and trifle. So delicious. Second night we went back for the hangi, more fry bread and steam pudding with custard. Not disappointed. So...good. Friendly service too!More

The decor is like a sort of vintage fast food place. Not much to look at. But the staff are very amenable. The place provides you with good hangi food at a reasonable price and is one of our favourites when we want something quick...and easy with no worries. We've been going here for yonks with no problems. We also like to get hangis for when we have visitors and I would recommend it for that. Give 'em a taste of the local cuisine!More

Every time I visited this place, I was always greeted with a lovely smile. Food is very good for your money and it's good for people to try Maori food. Give the fry bread a try, it's amazing. This is more of a takeaway joint...not a restaurant.More

Started off with 3 hangi meals, big bag of fried bread,...pudding with custard, and two big steam pudding for back home. OMG food was great and seafood chowder was to die for. Will def return. Wonderful atmosphere and friendly ladies. Thanks so much. Ps im hungry just writing thisMore

I want to rate the Hangi Pit higher - I truly do, but I just cant If I am to base this review on this establishments signature dish - The Hangi, then the best I can give is an average. I love a good hangi...- and because of this I go to the Hangi Pit at least monthly in the hope that this time things will be better. They are not... I always pay for the LARGE hangi - and somehow, no matter if I ask they guy behind the counter or not - I always get the hangi with no Pork. What? This is the best part of the hangi. I have observed others who have actually been blessed to find pork in their hangi - and the portion is soooo tiny. The hangi are steamed and often flavour less. Not the best representation of this dish Other dishes are awesome though. Definitely try the raw fish, creamed mussels, trifle, steamed pudding.. They are ALL delicious The premises itself is a bit dingy looking. Needs a good scrub and freshen up The staff aren't all friendly and sometimes look pissed off that you have disturbed them.. There are no staff uniforms or dress codes But I keep going back in the hope of pork in the hangi - and coz the other dishes are pretty goodMore

We had tried to get hangi food in Rotorua and Hastings but both times found the places closed in the evening. We were also getting the kind of looks you'd get asking for a kebab house in the UK each time we asked people in...info offices or at our accomodation for local hangi food outlets. So this time we were prepared. We'd searched online for hangi in Gisborne the previous evening, set off from Napier and went straight to the Hangi Pit as soon as we arrived. We didn't know what to have but the lovely woman there advised us to share the large meal (between two). We also got fried bread, then set off to the beach to enjoy. It was delicious! Hangi is steamed in a pit apparently, so it's the cooking method that is important and now I understand why. We had chicken, pork and lamb with potato, sweet potato, pumpkin, cabbage, and a type of stuffing all cooked together. The result is tasty and tender and utterly delicious. The fried bread isn't what we were expecting, as it seemed to be fried bread dough but it was also fab and perfect for sopping up the juices. We're not sure why we had been getting the funny looks. We've eaten in a wide variety of places in New Zealand while travelling and this food was as good as any we've had and better than some (and a whole lot cheaper! !) Great food, very good value.More

If you like the food cooked in a hangi ( a type of pit) you will like the food here. It is like fast food. You don't wait. they don't have tables, so mostly we buy and we eat at the park. I love the...fried bread. they must be a million calories buy I just love them.More

a piece of chicken, pig, beef, potatoes, cabbage -take them and cooked them in pit, really slowly. As simple as this. Tasty as hell. If I have to make a value for meal evaluation, this place would get the top points. Unfortunately there is only...1 table to eat the food. it is mostly take away.More

Not quite a "cooked in the ground" Hangi, but a "faster food" version! By far the best is the little sweet and sticky pork or chicken served with creamy potato (at lunchtime). I love the marinated or raw mussels and raw fish salads. Look out...for the traditional cornbread AND steam pudding oOo yumyum. Did I mention the FRIED BREAD, mama~mia get some with a creamed mussels or seafood chowder... Great hangover food (can I say that?) always seem to be open on boxing day and 2nd Jan (after R&V goodness). A bit "stodgy" but sometimes we need that :)More

Many fast food choices here with cheap prices. The fish pieces were larger than normal and the actual chips were thicker than your average fry. The hamburger with the lot was oversized as well . We were very pleased at the fast and very polite...service we received here despite the shop being very busy with phone orders as well as the passing trade. My partner had the hangi pack which again was very generous with the serving size. Overall exceptional value for money and also the meal satisfaction rating gets top marks, no one needed dessert and weren't hungry again until breakfast the next morning.More
