We stopped by for the restaurant month meal. We did book ahead and it was a good idea since most of their tables were for couples and there were only 1 or 2 tables for more people. The restaurant is quite small as well.
As it is a French restaurant, we all ended up starting with the escargot. The garlic butter with the bread and snails were delicious. I was able to use the bread to soak up most of the garlicky goodness left on the plate.
I decided to try the fish for mains. The fish of the day was snapper and it was cooked beautifully and there were quite a few fillets on the plate. The ratatouille was a bit different since the veges were still fairly whole and it didn't have a lot of sauce with it. It was stilled cooked nicely and tasted really good.
The best part was dessert, with the creme brulee being bruleed in front of you. Nicely flavours and quite smooth. The dish was quite shallow though so it went really fast.
I also tried 1664 with a shot of Picon and that was quite nice. I was confused at first about the dark colour until I remembered the Picon. It added some sweetness and bitterness to the beer which made it tastier. We did have to remind them about the order though since they forgot the first time around.
I quite liked the place for dinner. There were a few other interesting things on the menu like cheese fondue and raclette, and I would be quite willing to come back to try their other items.

A quant little French cafe/ bistro in a laneway off high st.
Nice French style menu with breakfast until 11am (later on weekends) and a lunch/ dinner menu post 12pm.
Like most places at the moment they are understaffed. The 2 staff on were working hard however in a full service meant delays and slow arrival of food.
The food was lovely - no complaints there.
My feedback would be to have some French cafe music playing to enhance the ambiance and authenticity- strange to have the lovely French setting with random music playing.

We visited Le Chef on our last night in Auckland having seen it tucked away in a small street on our walks. It's tiny with several tables inside but also a few on the street too. The food was so good, best in our stay in Auckland by far. We had chicken skewers and a fish dish followed by the sorbet - delightful.

Don't waste your money here. This was a joke not a French restaurant.
As someone who ate at loads of French restaurants in France this was just a joke to me.
The escargot was out of a can and tasted horrible, the steak was the thinnest and over cooked steak we've ever had, the duck was overcooked and don't get me on started on their overpriced bad wine.
The service was horrible too, they left us with a waiting staff who was so new and had absolutely no knowledge of the food or wine.
Overall we expected a lot and got really bad experience

We dined at Le Chef as part of Restaurant Month. Their 3 course dinner for $40 is obviously a bargain but it was also disappointing. I think they are doing themselves a disservice with their bargain offering.
To start we ordered Escargots and Le Chevre mari la tomate, described as baked goat cheese & tomato. It was a hot baked tomato filled with a watery substance that I can only assume was the cheese. It was flavourless and just plain weird, I should have ordered the salmon.
While waiting for our mains the table in front of us were served the special steak. That is when we got concerned because the steak special was a thin, sad looking piece of steak with a sauce jar and a handful of chips next to it. I have never seen such a pathetic serving of chips.
Luckily the portion my partner got was slightly less sad. The fish of the day was served with a delicious sauce and seasonal greens. The crème brulee was also good.
I was keen to order a french cider but they didn't have any on the menu, only Magners, which was disappointing. The beer selection was also uninspiring.
The fish of the day showed this restaurant can make good quality food. I don't understand why they would pitch a bargain Restaurant Month menu to get customers in the door and then serve them a pathetic portion of chips next to a sad steak.
We will stick to other central city French restaurants, we won't be back.

We were strolling around downtown Auckland looking for a breakfast spot and luckily stumbled across Le Chef. We were both hungry so ordered the egg breakfast on toast and man, was it good.
Service was very friendly but a little slow, which was fine as it was great to sit and enjoy a coffee at our curb side table watching all the people.
Food was great and not that expensive, a definite spot for a good breakfast.

If you want to feel like in Paris, this is the place to go. First of all, thank you to the two gents who looked after us so well. I asked for a quiet spot for our business lunch meeting and that’s exactly what we got - a private space just for us! Food was a delight and the client we were hosting was just amazed with the platters and the service and the wine of course
Le Chef will never disappoint you, I’ve been to their Bastille Day event 3 years in a row and again super amazing.
Thank you guys as always, will be back again.

As good as I’ve found for breakfast, since Brittany.
Quietly tucked into the little side street, off Queens Street, in Auckland. The greeting was lovely; we chose a table further back from he street, and didn’t have to wait for beautifully brewed and served coffee.
The menu is catering to a wide number of tastes, in a French way…. Then came Croque Madame. Huge serving, beautiful to look at, beautiful to eat. Fabulous.
My partner said that his muesli as the best he’s had in life.
If we lived in Auckland Le Chef would become our weekend regular.

**The Good:**
Le Chef stole my heart with its enchanting French haven. The ambiance swept me away to Paris, and the staff's warmth made me feel like family. Each dish, a masterpiece; each bite, a revelation. The wine selection danced in harmony with the flavors, creating a symphony of taste that still lingers in my memory.
**The Bad:**
In this whirlwind of perfection, a few moments fell slightly short. Pacing between courses wavered, and popularity brought longer waits. Yet, the staff's swift response smoothed out these wrinkles, highlighting their dedication to excellence.
**The Ugly:**
No "ugly" exists at Le Chef; only moments that fade against its brilliance. It's a haven where every detail is crafted with care, and any hiccups are eclipsed by the exceptional experience.
In short, Le Chef isn't just a restaurant; it's a love affair with French cuisine. Every aspect, from the setting to the service, paints an unforgettable picture. While minor flaws exist, they're mere blips in a sea of perfection. Dining here is an immersion into culinary artistry that will leave you longing for an encore.

Really enjoyed our breakfast here. The avocado on toast with poached eggs was really good. The big breakfast fed the two of us as I am an light eater. The 3 eggs were poached and came out perfectly soft and a beautiful orange yolk. Priced accordingly due to the type of ingredients used. Because they are so busy, service was really good, but coming back to the table for more coffee or water would have been ideal.

Enjoyed the escargot and the ratatouille. The fish was really nicely done but the beef flank was tough. Creme brulee was scrumptious but cheese selection was either a soft cheese or a hard cheese. Choose the hard one but not sharp enough for me but they were generous with the portion of cheese though. Still a very French vibe on the food and service was excellent.

Nice rustic decor, went there specifically after reading menu online only to find what I wanted to order wasn't available. No one came to take coffee orders so we went and found someone who then continued a lengthy conversation with a colleague and appeared to forget us. There was only one other customer in cafe so not busy. When coffee did arrive it was good coffee, must admit, but still, customer service could be improved.

Thank heavens for real food and not the fancy layers and colors which seem to occupy most modern chefs' presentations. Six of us sitting at a round table in a corner where our sense of humor and views on the world could not offend anyone, what a joy. Even our table attendant seemed to appreciate my poor French. Standouts for me were the scallops, black pudding on mash, and the meat and pate platter, ample servings, and excellent flavors. Par excellence and merci beaucoup.

The special was Steak and any drink $22. Fries were off the menu, yet we saw many others getting theirs, so I was offered more salad, that was just greens, nothing else. I chose a ginger beer as a drink. I was told sauce was 'a little but extra' so chose pepper sauce on my steak. The bill came to $31.50. I won't be returning.

Stumbled on this cafe while wandering arround queen st and decided to pop in for breakfast. Really enjoyed our meal, Hubby had the big breakfast which was filling and well cooked (he said the hollandaise was on point!) , i had the croque monsieur which was delicious aswell, or thought not sure about the "salad" which was just a massive pile of sad looking lettuce,(probably could have done without that). Really good overall, would love to come back for a dinner.
